  1. Man. The ways this expansion is finding give us these very human moments is astoundingly good. This really surpasses the struggle that games have with ‘go here, do thing, and solve people’s emotional problem immediately’ , and it’s writing is so much the stronger for it..

  2. Emit Selch is great, but the Crystal Exarch is hands down my favorite character in this expansion. I don't think he has a single miss in his character this entire expansion.

  3. Aaaaah, do people ever notice
    In 25:54! That moment!
This gate, the tunnel! It's the same structure as /the path to the Waking Sands/. It's the same path you follow when going there from the closest aetheryte!
One last time! Return to the Waking Sands!

  4. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend going back and reviewing Minfillia's goodbye to Thancred back in post-Heavensward, just before she goes with Ardbert + Co to the First. There's a lot of beautiful parallels between Minfillia's final words to Thancred, and Thancred's final words to Minfillia.

  5. – "If Minfilia was here she would tell you to choose you fate & live your own life" WHICH SHE DID!! AND THANCRED DECIDED TO NOT RELAY SAID MESAGE!! you Lahabrea hosting arse
    – Hoozah! the talos & the Troley industry reignites, glad to see our Lion Boy slowly regain his spirit
    – I lover the Crystal Exard, he's a good Mystery wrapped in an Enigma wearing a hoodie of Secrets
    – Nooooo!! not the Talos!
    – let the battle of incompetent dads begin, & Kratos isn't even here to referee, I love when they let you play as the Scions & i wish that was a thing you could do in co-op
    – c'mon Thancred stop being a Drama Queen & get back up, we didn't went thru all that trouble to just leave the Talos abandoned

  6. Playfriends, it's time to deliver Agna's last work to Magnus. I'm not sure he'll enjoy it. This is your spoiler free lore comment.

2:37 – Guthjon and the trolley team think that Agna's death wasn't in vain, we have the leonine now. But was it? If you lost a loved one when they went a desperate quest and someone returned with the fruit of their labor, would it sting any less? Seeing that they're dead and gone, all for the sake of A ROCK!? HOW MANY ROCKS WOULD MAGNUS GIVE TO HAVE ONE MORE DAY WITH HER!? WHAT DOES IT MATTER THAT SHE FOUND THE LEONINE, SHE'S STILL DEAD! His family is dead. And no rock will change that.

6:45 – Nothing will change that Agna and Skuli are dead. Not finding leonine. Not a functional talos. And not drinking himself into a grave.

7:25 – Before Shadowbringers, Urianger was a odd character. A researcher, a soothsayer, a schemer. He talks in weird ways and has a weird way of dressing. But in this scene between Minifilia and Urianger, we get some of the deepest moments of his character. He's a man full of regret. For all his knowledge and work he's failed two women he looked up to. And he feels he's failing a third now. But for all of that, he won't leave a crying child to suffer alone. When his cards are down, he's a good dad. And with his prompting, Minifilia is able to fully express how inadequate she feels. How much Thancred's actions have hurt her.

10:00 – A lot of players tend to feel that this Twine section kind of drags. After the pace of the Rak'tika Greatwood, the idiosyncrasies of Twine feel kind of out of place. We're fixing a trolley! There's a drunk engineer! But as we travel through the zone a lot of it is alongside Thancred. And so we get comparisons. A man who lost his family and his will to live, only to be given the gift of his wife's final legacy. A man who is willing to comfort the young girl who's been neglected for years and coax her feelings to the surface. And we see that it's not Minifilia who is inadequate. But so much time has passed that Thancred can't find something to fill the empty space. To answer for all his failures.

13:40 – Time for an aside while these two share a stage. During Shadowbringers, Emet-Selch and The Crystal Exarch created a minor fan schism. René Zagger (not to mention Hiroki Takahashi, Eilias Changuel, and Andreas Hofer) performs as the swaggering conniving Asican while opposite him Jonathan Bailey (along with Yuma Uchida, Loïc Guingand, and Marcus Off) plays the enigmatic gentle Exarch. But both of these characters hide secrets and seem to be playing you against the other. Many of the community felt torn between these two on who to trust. Okay, it wasn't just who to trust. This was also a thirst war. The two characters who warred for the Warrior of Light's attention and the fandom's hearts. So Playfriends, are you Team Emet or Team Exarch?

19:20 – A Chekhov's special gunblade cartridge has been written into the scene!

23:05 – Going forward without any of the team members capable of casting healing spells (barring Durmin)? I'm sure nothing will go wrong!

25:42 – Playfriends, does this slope seem familiar to you? Do you feel like we need to pray return somewhere? Just me?

26:03 – "Oh Sheet! It's Ran'jit! He's About to do the Punchy Hands and Kickin' with Feet!" – JoCat

26:32 – What is Gukumatz? How is Ran'jit so powerful? The devs left some loose plot threads with what they wanted to do with Ran'jit's history, and unfortunately most of it was cut from Shadowbringers. In fact this information was only fully revealed recently, well after Shadowbringers, making it feel like a bit of a retcon. This story, 'Bringer of Shadow, Bringer of Light', is on the FFXIV Lodestone, but is rife with spoilers. I've extracted the details of Ran'jit here.

Prior to the Flood of Light, the Mayor of Eulmore called upon an ancient order of assassins from a far flung land to visit with him. Their head, Zal'bard, came to meet with the man and in doing so survived the Flood. The rest of his order, his entire culture, everyone he knew was wiped out by the Flood. But in the years afterwards, he had a son, Ran'jit. Ran'jit is the legacy of an entire order of assassins and began his brutal training since birth. His mind holds lost martial arts and techniques from a continent buried under Light. When the first Minfilia was found, she trained with him, although she was older. Zal'brand would eventually fell a lightwarden, only to succumb to its Light in the aftermath. Ran'jit ascended to his place in his father's stead. In time, the first Minfilia would fall, and Ran'jit would carry her to Eulmore's crypts himself. When the next Minfilia was found, Ran'jit began her training. "Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young."

28:15 – The cinematography and writing here is excellent. Ran'jit looking to the right while Minifilia and Thancred look to the left, all while Minifilia finally delivers her thesis of life. Perhaps after leaving the gilded cage she's found her own wings, in spite of Thancred's missteps.

30:50 – DAD FIGHT! Thancred serves as a little taste of how to play Gunbreaker. Notably, the 3 button attack combo is condensed to one and there isn't a dedicated system for the Gnashing Fang combo. But this battle is also the first sample of playing a Tank that the game forces. Thancred's damage output compared to Ran'jit's health means this is a long fight. Players have to juggle dealing damage with mitigating undodgable attacks, healing, and avoiding the mechanics. Most agree that this fight goes on too long. I think the intention was that this fight goes on long enough to serve as Thancred's internal war (punctuated with his argument with Ran'jit). The length of this fight references how long Thancred has been wrestling with his actions towards Minifilia. Ran'jit is a representation of how wrong he was in treating her coldly. He has to have an extended struggle with his own tendencies. This fight is his penance. It tests his resolve in Minifilia and her new life. And it lasts so long to ensure we feel every bit of damage he's taken. Every hit point lost is in the name of doing right by her. But yes, it feels too long.

33:24 – We didn't know that Reaper was going to be coming in Endwalker when this was new, and Ran'jit doesn't fulfill many of the Reaper's mechanics. But this transformation does seem comparable to Enshroud.

40:14 – 'Souldeep Invisibility. Completely conseals own presence by temporarily severing the flow of life-sustaining aether.' Thancred was doing the magic equivalent of slowing his heart to evade detection. Now he's figuratively stopping his heart to get one last shot in. And based on the fact that he nearly topples multiple times in the attempt, it might literally be stopping his heart.

40:43 – And Chekhov's the special gunblade cartridge fires! This animation looks like Thancred's Gnashing Fang combo (minus Continuation between each step).

43:30 – One more goodbye to the little girl who he watched grow up on the streets of Ul'Dah. The woman who would be the Antecedent. We'll never know what his last words were. Goodbye Thancred.

    Next time: A fateful choice.

  7. I enjoy how the game gives you a taste of a class and a direct perspective of a different person by using the "play as ____" duties. Especially when the person is actively hiding their feelings, though as a college graduate of spy university you would assume Thancred would do a better job at it.

  8. I think the clack-clack-clack I’m hearing isn’t just the trolley, but the rollercoaster starting its ascent

Playframers who don’t know what’s coming… keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle, because it only gets more intense from here
