  1. God what a great antagonist. Anyone can make a moustache twirling villain, but Emet Selch is like "you're not gonna trust me but I'm so darn charismatic that you're gonna like me anyway"

  2. Gotta admire their confidence in BGM, to have La Hee continue playing @13:30 XD

Also, there's more characterisation shown in this one scene for Emet-Selch than most villains get in their entire game. His power, enough to call souls back safely from the Lifestream,. He's also considerate enough to create clothes for Y'shtola, showing that he's not some alien god, but very much human.

And to say nothing of the callback to Y'shtola using Flow all the way back in ARR. Such continuity is sweet payoff for the worldbuilding seeds sown over the years.

  3. 14:51 I think, this part here, where Emet Selch does follow through on bringing Y’shtola back, is where I started actually liking him on my own and not just the mostly vague and sometimes spoilery things I’d heard about this character. It’s here that I really started being curious about what his deal was and why he was doing things, and started truly wanting to dig into his character. It’s so fascinating even in retrospect tbh.

  4. Ah yes, this is were things start to get VERY interesting. Also, is Y'shtola the only scion who've we've heard laugh? Such a wonderful scene. (Also tiny spoiler in replies)

  5. I can’t help but think of Piccolo’s line in DBZ Abridged when Emhet-selk snaps Y’shtola’s clothes on: “Clothes beam! That is easily my most metro attack.”

  6. (Spoilers for the end of this video ahead)

To this day I'm still impressed by how much heavy lifting the post-ravel scene does to elevate the Ascians as antagonists, just a complete 180 in terms of their having engaging motives.

  7. So did anyone actually believe in Y'sh's third fake death? I just rolled my eyes when she fell and other than Runar not even the characters in the game seem to take it seriously.
On the other hand Emet casually pulling her out of the lifestream does more to establish the Ascians as powerful than anything Lahabrea ever did. Previously it took all 3 seedseers and the Elementals to do this

  8. 3:30 We don't know for certain, and she's come back from worse.
6:23 As someone who literally had to pause the video because the family dog is no more… he's right, but I hate that he's the one who said it.
6:31 Y'shtola is likely not dead. If being absorbed and spat out by the lifestream didn't kill her, a fall probably won't, either. Not that I'm convinced she hit bottom, or if she did, at full force.
8:10 Well, hopefully she won't end up adrift again.
    8:38 Oh, not again.
10:10 I don't think you'd really be able to deal with him. Annoy or inconvenience him, probably.
12:46 I wonder if they could've made it so that once you used the item, you got something akin to the light gem bar from Thief, instead of activating it all the time.
15:17 Please tell me someone brought a robe.
    15:46 Ok, that's neat.
17:50 Well, now that you've robbed all meaning from it, sure.
18:48 I think only Matoya could give Y'shtola an order she'd listen to.
22:53 I would not hold my breath there.
36:41 Of this sort, sure. One that requires squeezing through openings with fun names like "meat grinder" not so much.
52:09 I just realised how odd Y'shtola's feathers(?) are. They have to be affixed to her hair, but in such a way they look like earrings on a human.
55:38 Of course Y'shtola would ask the "right" question.
56:24 Hm, complicated goal. It is right to want to rebuild your home. It is not right to write off the countless lives lost in the process.

  9. The reveal appears to be consistent with the setting's rules as I understand them thus far, but so would a clever lie. I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait at least three expansions to get a definitive answer though.

  10. Am I the only one who immediately called their bluff and knew instantly Y'shtola would be back?
This is the third time she does the self sacrifice thing and comes back. At least this time she didn't get KO'ed for 90% of an expansion.

  11. They did a good job with Y'shtola's blindness when she was asking Urianger to paint her a picture of the night sky with his words. Then they undo it with her talking about the murals at 49:15. When Minfilia asked "how can you tell?", I immediately responded with "Yeah, how CAN you tell, hmm?"

  12. 49:34 Wait, I might be forgetting but how can Y'shtola see paint but not stars? I know she sees via ether but I would've thought Stars do give off ether? Especially if something like paint does.

Also, big reveal huh. I personally belive it.

  13. I remember when I was yet a young Dark Knight, and this revelation blew my mind as well. I have looked forward to this specific moment in the story for so very long. Also the next moment, and also the next.

  14. Fun side trivia: There is a Wind-Up Runar minion, a little clockwork toy that can follow your player around. If you are close to another player that has a Y'shtola minion following them, toy Runar will approach the toy Y'shtola and present a flower. (The Y'shtola minion has no programmed reaction to this and ignores him.)

  15. What's that Playfriends, Y'shotla fell down a well? This is your spoiler free lore comment!

2:00 – Runar made a promise to Master Matoya. And he was going to keep that promise, even if it would cost his life.

11:07 – This is a reference to Lauren Bacall's famous line in the film To Have and Have Not.

15:00 – Back in Heavensward, bringing back Y'shtola required extensive negotiation with the Elementals and Y'mhitra to provide an example of her aether. And it was not a guaranteed thing that the Elementals would be able to retrieve her. And now Emet-Selch accomplishes this with the snap of his fingers. What's more, he recreates her garb, which the Elementals could not do. Emet-Selch holds a level of power that outstrips many we've encountered at this point.

27:47 – Don't worry Playfriends, we'll hear the tale of Mitron and Loghrif eventually.

Since we're back in a dungeon, we'll cover another member of our Trust party! Today we'll cover our newest addition: Y'shtola. Unlike her appearances in the Duty Support system for earlier dungeons, Y'shtola has given up her Conjurer abilities and now plays as the job Sorceress, her own version of Black Mage. Y'shtola's spell casting rotation seems to follow the Black Mage sequence, in particular casting Foul and then multiple Fire IVs. Her casts have some AoE usage, but not to the level a player would use. She will use Aetherial Manipulation to ensure she's near the healer if she's getting low on HP to ensure she's in healing range. Y'shtola has a reputation in the community as solving boss mechanics the best, even better than other NPCs, but this may have some bias as all Trust NPCs are supposed to avoid boss mechanics. The community attributes her ability to read mechanics with her aethersight spell. With all of this being said, I have personally experienced her pathing failing to dodge a mechanic, to the point that she was eating continuous damage. Y'shtola can use the party Limit Break, but she's fairly low on the priority list for it (you'll notice that she doesn't use it during the final boss here). "The Gloves Are Off!"

If you got back to Dohn Mheg, Y'shtola can be chosen to enter the dungeon, even though she wouldn't be available at that point in the MSQ. She also cheats at the tightrope sequence, and is perhaps the most egregious of your party as she walks across the thin air, dismissing the puzzle as an illusion.

39:30 – I guess now is a great time to bring up the Explorer Mode that was added in Shadowbringers. Explorer Mode allows you to go through a dungeon alone and examine the art of the place at your own pace, with no enemies. On top of that, you can enter into GPose while inside Explorer Mode, allowing you to take screenshots and photos of your character in many various poses inside the dungeon, including using battle animations!

39: 56 – Interestingly, the sight here before dropping down the waterfalls appears to be a reference to The Secret of Mana. A helpful friend BtEtta has made a comparison video showing that the birds flying through the jungle are remarkably similar to the intro cutscene of the Secret of Mana, and you can see the comparison here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7MgcG2quR0

42:00 – Eros, the Greek term for sensual or romantic love. You might recognize the base model of this boss is the same as Cerberus in the World of Darkness. Have some Triple Triad card lore: "The Lightwarden of the Rak'tika Greatwood. A chimeric monstrosity, Eros was thought to be the amalgamation of several unfortunate creatures that were caught up and fused together by the Flood of Light. The meaning of its name ─ 'romantic love' ─ is a mocking play upon the intimate and uncontrolled embrace which resulted in its present appearance."

47:45 – As a reminder, even with her aether sight, there are things Y'shtola cannot see. The light of stars are among them. And this little character moment gives Urianger a moment to flex his vast vocabulary.

48:40 – This little pat reminds me that we've now covered all of the visual spoilers for a fun video out of Kupocon 2021! While Kupocon was online, several English voice actors participated in the opening ceremonies, including Timothy Watson. Host Alex Maine requested that he read out the Urianger style lyrics of Kelis' 'Milkshake' (much to everyone's, especially Bethan Walker, delight). You can see the video here:

    https://youtu.be/qy4OfOAx1wE?si=-Vw-NXitZF37je-c

54:30 – Hydaelyn. Zodiark. The Oldest Primals. Which calls so much into question. Among them is this: when someone is tempered by a Primal, they cannot be tempered by another. Their soul is dominated by that Primal. Durmin cannot be tempered. We attribute this to the Echo, this rare power he wields. But what if it simply means his soul is already owned by another?

56:00 – The Ascians are immortal. But Emet-Selch has something interesting. He *remembers*. While the Source and its 13 reflections were shattered apart and fractured the world that once was, He *Remembers*. Emet-Selch is Unsundered. He is WHOLE. And the world he once lived in was Whole. Our world is not.

Next time: A hero's welcome. Only 2 Lightwardens remain!

  16. As someone who is thoroughly enjoying the story for the first time, I feel similarly to the end of Infinity war after finishing this episode…

Also, the party should have brought clothes with them. They should have known how Y'shtola would come back, they'd seen it before.

  17. Yay! I was right! Though… Now I'm very curious about how Ranjit will end up coming back for his inevitable boss fight.

Also, d'aww…. Runar and Y'shtola is super cute.
