more FFXIV videos??? I'm in
about the paadin: Is there any enemy/boss that has any attack that ignores hallowed ground? if so, who could they be?
Can't wait for New Gridania! Mostly because that's where I started in FF14.
Just one thing that hits too close to home, don't save hallowed ground for emergencies. Use it as part of your plan so that the emergencies are less likely to happen in the first place. For dungeon trash pulls, invulnerability for 10 seconds at the start is a HUGE help that gives the healer a break and makes it much easier to kill things off before they start causing actual trouble. If you sit there saving it for emergencies, you'll join the crowd that never uses it and makes their healers sad.
8:26 That pair in the background lovingly looking at each-other while trying to ignore the edgy cosplayer filming in a public park.
Wonder if Dan will wait to jump into the expansion jobs at a later date or jump into those after Gridania.
We might be done the 10 base jobs after Gridania, but there are ten more to go!
Ah yes, the war cry of black mages everywhere when Ley Lines are down:
"HEALERS ADJUST"
EDIT: Come on autocorrect. Mages, not males
Do I play FFXIV? Yes.
Have I played literally every job and therefore know plenty about them? Yes.
Do I still watch all of these for the wholesome combination of Dan and Durmin? Heck yes.
Always good to know whether or not you are god's favorite.
To continue from last time here are the level 90 skills for these jobs to give a sense of completeness
Paladin (PLD): They get a combo where they summon a bunch of swords three times to do big damage. These are also ranged attacks.
Monk (MNK): An upgrade to one of those big hits that Dan was talking about, hits harder and looks flashier
Black Mage (BLM): Everytime you switch from fire to ice and vice versa your default fire or ice spell upgrades to Paradox which replaces that spell in the skill rotation and does more damage than the default version.
You generally don't want to be punching gods in the face. Usually, you'll be trying to do it from the side, or from behind them.
Wait didn't monk lose most of the positional attacks? It was my understanding they only had two now which is less than even Dragoon now. I know this isn't meant to be a guide, but just in case someone is using these to decide what to try when they start playing, Monk doesn't require nearly as much dancing around now.
These shorter explanation videos of this game are so lovely!
monk and black mage mains are some of the most buckwild players in this game
Black mage seems like fun!
before i quit i was trying to lvl into black mage. looks fun
the more videos i watch the more i wanna play. lets just say i know i will spend my time looking up how to make my own clothes and cook cos it looks fun lol
As a monk main, i love being able to say "I punch gods."
Ah the Black Mage! When I played magic/fantasy games I used to prefer the 'mundane' weapons made from trusty steel over magical combat. But then I played FFXIV's Black Mage and something just clicked with it for me! I really like playing casters in all fantasy games now! Not to mention my real-life collection of wide-brim pointy hats has increased since then.
I started the game as a Black Mage before transferring to Red Mage at Level 50, definitely fun tho it made some of the encounters on my own a bit more difficult xD. Glass cannon indeed
Black Mage main here.
I like big booms, and I cannot lie.
Thanks for another great video!
I've seen others give helpful corrections in the comments before so I figured I would as well.
1. Monks actually lost most of their positionals this expansion. Now they only have 2! (tied for the least amount)
2. Ice phase for Black Mage actually regenerates mana over time, not with each cast. The regeneration is just super fast. This one is a bit nit-picky but I figured I'd include it.
Also, punching gods in the face is, indeed, very fun. Can confirm 🙂
Durmin looks adorable in all those outfits.
8:45 Holy Fuck, Dan! Shots Fired! XD
Just finished off Endwalker with my monk last week!
I went with the biggest Roegadyn possible because all the flips and such look ABSURD with a character that big.
Hey dan! I was wondering…what's your favorite job to play as on your casual playthroughs!
08:26 I feel like Durmin is interrupting something there 😛
Thank you Dan for giving us (almost) a whole week of FFXIV content.
God Bless 😇✝️
As a Black Mage main I was looking forward to this video! Go Team Explosion! Join today! We have cool hats!
Also we don't always stand still! With a new second charge of Triplecast and Swiftcast you can actually weave while moving pretty effectively now, even if it does mean trading on efficiency.
Gotta admit that I'm disappointed.
When I heard "sheltron," I was hoping we'd get a robot turtle.
I really appreciate this series. I'm a big FF fan who can't manage the MMOs and so getting a sense of the playstyle of these classes in a simple way is REALLY HARD. So many tutorials dive too deeply into the minutae. Stuff like "black mages stay in one spot and alternate between ice to restore mp and fire to spend it on big booms" is SUPER USEFUL as someone who wants to know what the deal is without having to learn too much of the particulars.
Just this morning I was playing as a thaumathurge (a bit of a long story) and had no idea what I was doing. Now I understand a lot better how I'm supposed to fight when my MP evaporates so quickly. 😅
Paladin main here just want to point out that you still do use mana under the effects of Requiescat, there's a couple of buffs post 80 that add a healing effect to Holy Spirit and Holy Circle while also giving you instant ranged spell casts. Keep up the great work Dan, it's always great to see easily digestible content being created.
MNK has been my favorite class ever since they "simplified" NIN in Shadowbringers.
It feel so good to know what to use when and do it with speed.
Err, Requiscat does not eliminate MP cost for spells. Dan, you can see your MP going down. However, Paladin's spells do cost half as much MP as they did last expansion, so there is that.
my favorite thing about monk is the emperor's new fists. got an entire glamour plate that's just that so i can glam over every new pgl/mnk weapon i equip. nothing so satisfying as beating a primal to death with your bare hands. cosmetically, at least. XD
So! Many! FFXIV Videos! But spoiler free lore comments will continue!
Gladiator/Paladin! The Tank that decided it wanted to heal & cast also! As Dan notes, Paladins have the ability to cast offensive & healing magic, with the level 90 kit allowing the offensive magic to heal the Paladin. The Paladin is also considered to have some of the best damage mitigation abilities, including a group damage mitigation where they gain ethereal wings, protecting everyone in a cone behind them while they stay still. Paladin also has the simplest invulnerability in the game, Hallowed Ground. You press it, and you take no damage, with the drawback being a long cooldown. The one issue with the Gladiator/Paladin is that it's known to have one of the most boring job questlines in the game. As a Gladiator, you don't even do that much gladiating, at least until a tournament arc later, which is still pretty paint by numbers.
Pugilist/Monk! Monk recently got some big changes in Endwalker, reducing the number of positional attacks. They also changed the gap closer ability. Previously, you had to target an enemy to use the ability to charge forward and do damage. Now, the ability does no damage, but you can also select allies to zip to! The Monk job quests deal a lot with the disciples of the god Rhalgr the Destroyer. Rhalgr is heavily associated with Ala Mhigo, and the job quests deal with the martial arts sect that has survived the occupation.
Thaumaturge/Black Mage! The Thaumaturges of Ul'Dah got their start as cremationists. That's right, they burn dead bodies, it's the reason the achievements for leveling the job is called "Bring out your Dead". Black Mage has a big reputation of dealing massive damage, at the cost of mobility. The long cast times, the need to stay in ley lines, and the need to maintain the astral/umbral buffs tend to lead to artillery type casting, but can result in Black Mages getting squished by bosses. Notably, with their ability triplecast, and the ability to "slide cast" (moving when the cast bar is almost full, ensuring the spell isn't interrupted while moving) actually gives them decent mobility, but using this effectively requires aa lot of practice. One big note is that Black Magic is kinda restricted in the lore of the game. The 6th Umbral Calamity (the calamity of water) resulted from a war between White Mages & Black Mages. The nation of Mhach not only championed Black Magic, but also used voidsent to power some of their magical devices. After the world was flooded, both White & Black Magic went into decline, with Black Magic only returning after extensive archeological study by a fringe thaumaturge. We'll talk about White Magic when we get to Gridania.
Ah, yes, Paladin. The job with the best named skill in the game: Request Cat
will you be doing vids for the expansion jobs as well? love these little intros!
> Paladin
> Uses a Sword and Shield
JoCat/JoCrap intensifies
Eventually there will be 201, 202 and 203 for the expansion jobs?
Honestly, monk sounds like a great class to sell an MMO to people who usually only play Action RPGs! Neat!
The Monk (MNK) was simplified a bit with the recent release of Endwalker, so that only the combo finishers require proper positioning for optimal damage output. It's still a really technical job, though, as it requires you to keep track of things that the game's UI isn't very good for tracking. Like, come on. Why do NINs get a Huton gauge and MNKs don't at least get a Disciplined Fist gauge?
of course Yoshi P is a Lala Black Mage
Thanks for the video on Ul'dah. Returned after 6 months and actually had to look into the changes to the characters, was wondering for example why my Arcanist (this how I fond your 1st video on jobs) pet was just standing there LOL and needed short answers not the this rotation, that rotation etc.
And also, Black Mages do bathe, those are spell components you're smelling, honest! Sob
