Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward – #7 – Sohm Al

Not a great start to the dragon diplomacy, admittedly.

  1. I keep asking myself "Why do they bring the cranky dragoon along? He keeps telling them how he will start fights and cause problems!" I know he has plot reasons to be there, it just feel like setting up a shocking twist that will be utterly unsurprising.

"Oh look, Mr 'I'm going to incite conflict through my stubbornness' just did something stupid and stubborn… What a shock."

  2. As another commenter mentioned last time (and as Dan did the episode before that, iirc), Alphinaud's youth has definitely been played up in Heavensward – which is why I'm so amused by the fact that it basically falls to him (at @6:10 , for example) to tell the actual (non-Durmin) adults in the party to keep bickering to a minimum and invoke no unnecessary conflict. It feels like a responsibility that would (metaphorically speaking) fall to the teacher on a field trip, for example.

  3. Playfriends, are you ready for Dragon Mountain! It's kind of like Candy Mountain. Especially if you come back at the level 60 version. Anyways, it's your spoiler free lore comment!

"If there's one group of entities you probably don't wanna go back on bargains with, I assume Dragons has got to be in the top 5" – Dan Floyd, speaker of wisdom

3:53 – Vidofnir, it's just us. You don't have to roar at us all the time. A "hello" would suffice.

And lo, Durmin, along with Estinien, are going directly into the lion's den. Erm, dragon's den. Not the UK show about venture capital. Sohm Al is in the heart of Dravanian territory, and although Alphinaud and Ysayle view this as trek to get to Hraesvelgr, Estinien short of has a proper idea of what's about to happen. They're walking through the front door of a dragon roost. They will be engaged, whether they like it or not (especially with 2 Azur Dragoons in the party). The fact that this dungeon ends with Durmin slaying Nidhogg's consort, Tioman, is not going to go unnoticed, and honestly would degrade negotiations further. Nothing says "we want an armistice" like killing the opposing commander's spouse? Also , Tioman is not a mispelling of Tiamat. Tioman is the name of an island in Malaysia, which is supposedly the home of a dragon princess.

As Dan discusses the mechanics of Sohm Al, I should notify any players who are going through the story that mechanics for older content are being revised in the coming patches. ARR base game dungeons have already gone through this revision. While this radically changed some duties (particularly the duties that were at the end of the base game), for Heavensward it will likely just be alterations of the mechanic markers. This will make these mechanics clearer, as they will have markers that are consistent with the current standards.

Did you think we were done with Moogles? This is a Final Fantasy game, we're never done with moogles. And we'll get more moogles next episode!

  5. 23:05 "Good king Moggle Mog, good king Mog…" Oh no, not again…
That wide eyed expression when Durmin nodded to Alphinaud, so cute!
I love Ysayle's reaction to the Moogles. The Ice Queen likes the cuteness and fluffiness!
Yay! More Kan-E! I think she just wants to get out a little more often…

  6. When Dan is doing a boss battle with other people: “Oh no, I did very little. The rest of the team did most of the heavy lifting”

When characters in game doubt Durmin or challenge him “I kill GODS!”

  7. Ah yes, the return of our pom-pommed friends.

I really do love the moogle theme, any chance to reprise dear departed Good King Moogle Mog XII's (long may he reign) theme, is welcomed.
