Punch Durmin!
I love, love, love the callback to a quest you've probably forgotten long ago in the middle of ARR. Just… Everything is so complicated and anything can be a massively important plot point or at least have ripples that will be felt down the line.
His hands and feet might be tiny, but his punches and kicks will still own your shins.
Happy Final Fantasy Friday everyone 🎉
Today's question is which FF setting do you prefer: high fantasy (like 1-6) or science fiction (like 7, 13, and 15)?
Durmin Durami, with petite yet powerful punches.
I started playing FF14 around the time this series was halfway through ARR and finally caught up on this EP.
Man, what a ride. It's my first MMO and I enjoy every seconds of it.
Also, thanks and sorry to all the random nice people that carried this clunky bard through all those raids and trials.
Also also, oh, the money I would pay to see these characters hear and react to Dan's snarky remarks.
Something about the Griffin's plan seems… sloppy…
Loving the change, Monk's one of my favorite jobs. The Griffin is starting to seem like a problem, but come on- not realizing you're being watched by some of the Scions until now? That's a bit sloppy if you ask me.
Also Papalymo's Heavensward voice. I actually really HATE Papalymo's ARR voice, it's grating- so when I first heard his voice in the Heavensward patches I was like "OH THANK GOD." I also like Yda's new voice, though I didn't mind her ARR voice.
I love going through a good story at least 2 times. I have seen this part a long time ago but seeing it again is making me take notice of some setups and foreshadows I missed.
Playfriends, Durmin is now a punchy potat! This is your spoiler free lore comment!
Guess who's back, back again? It's the Scions' DPS team, Yda and Papalymo! The Griffin's speech is more than just showing the rallying of the Ala Mhigan refugees, but it brings the player up to speed on the state of Ala Mhigo under Garlean occupation. With Gaius van Baelsar dead, there's a new viceroy overseeing Gyr Abania, and they will become crucial to the coming story. Meanwhile, Yda & Papalymo are neck deep in the Ala Mhigan issues. This makes sense for Yda, the citizens of Little Ala Mhigo have noticed her as the daughter of Curtis Hext, the late leader of the Ala Mhigan Resistance. Both her and Papalymo owe them a debt, and Yda holds personal reasons to be fighting for the Ala Mhigans.
I again love that all Ala Mhigans speak with a Northern English accent in this localization. It helps cement that they have a cultural identity, no matter how far from home they are. I understand that not everyone feels this way. For some it sounds too much like a common accent, and the next NPC will just sound like Gary from Manchester.
Alphinaud probably realizes he doesn't talk like a common adventurer, and promptly drops the disguise. A bold move, and it gets straight to the point. The Griffin is willing to do anything to forward the cause of Ala Mhigo. After being trampled upon by Ul'dah, they're willing to risk it all for a glimmer of a chance at retaking their homeland. His people make fiery speeches, but Durmin knows what a Primal means. He's seen them summoned first hand, and has very recent experience with the grisly actions the tempered will do for their gods. However sympathetic the Ala Mhigans might be, facilitating a Primal summoning is too much.
As a separate note, the identity of the Griffin double is revealed in the Dark Knight job quests, but its fairly easy to narrow down the possibilities if you go back and watch Durmin's ARR story.
New Cast Members:
Laura Aikman, Jade in Dragon Quest 11, as Yda
Nigel Pilkington, Lieutenant Travis in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, as Papalymo
I really love the callback to the Quarymill quests in this part of the MSQ. It was a rather slow part of the ARR MSQ, but it really helps to give a sense of just HOW MANY folks you've been helping, and the idea that you're inspiring folks you've not even thought about in months.
It's kinda the inverse of M. Bison. For the WoL, it's just Tuesday, but for those you're helping, it may be the most important day in their lives.
It is neat learning that Yda and Papalymo were doing on their own heavenward in Ala-Migha while Durmin and Alphinaud were doing theirs in Ishgard. I'm glad they're back since I genuinely like their characters. Even though I realise he has to be knocked down a few notches, this griffin guy has some valid points. Oh man, you clearly weren't lying when you claimed that the game's story is well worth experiencing.
"This is no time for looking back"
Durming having only recently spent several days looking back at the events of Heavensward, this is quite funny.
Fun fact: That 'optional' dungeon (Sunken Temple of Qarn) used to be mandatory (pre-Heavensward release) and was the only instance of a dungeon being removed from the MSQ when they trimmed down ARR. I can't even remember what the point of going there was back in the day, so I imagine its importance to the overall plot was seen as miniscule when they streamlined the whole MSQ. I think it was something you needed to do for the former company of heroes guy in S Thanalan (Miqo guy) when "proving yourself" worthy of fighting Titan?
Edit: It was actually a level 50 quest in 2.1 that had you getting a wardstone from Sunken Temple of Qarn to bolster the defenses at Mor Dhona. Probably was removed because it was a weird example of an endgame quest telling you to run a low level dungeon. Wasn't even the level 50 hard version of Qarn as that didn't get added until 2.4.
In the speech given in the sunken Temple of Corn the Griffin make mention of the mad king, in fact the first mention of such a figure in the MSQ. However, the mad king is figure in the history of Ala Mhigo going back to 1.0. The issue is up to this point, every piece of dialogue about him that we could have encountered was optional, being included on a random NPC or sort of in the Monk quest (Monk quest is weird, all of the backstory is optional). The problem is that the mad king is actually very important to understanding what caused the Garlean occupation of Ala Mhigo. Because the game sort assumes you have a basic understanding of Ala Mhigo's history at this point I am going to broadly describe the events that lead us to an occupied Ala Mhigo.
Space for those wary of potential spoilers
Ala Mhigo was once ruled by a succession of kings, but a defeat in a war about a hundred years ago led to the seeding of power to the First of Rhalgar, an order of Monks beloved by the people of Ala Mhigo. The king from about 20 years ago Theodoric, became obsessed with control and despised the monks, coming into armed conflict with them and eventually killing all but a scant few and leaving their home the Temple of the Fist in ruin. Now destroying a broadly popular religious group did not endear Theodoric to the people and he greatly abused his control over them eventually sparking a rebellion, one which ended in Theodoric's death when the guards opened the gates of the city to the rebels. But Ala Mhigo without a head of state and in disarray was easy conquest for the Garleans, particularly Gaius, who sensed the weakness of the city state and pounced once central authority was lost. The Garleans have rule Ala Mhigo ever since.
Man, i would absolutely love it if i could just play with ether dan or JoCat.
Oh this is getting * spicy *
That little exchange about proof of the arrangement with the Amalj'aa is setting off alarm bells in my head.
"Wednesday episode was long…" Me: O__O "let's make this shorter" Me: aww but I like long episodes :(Had to say that 😂 See ya on Monday <3
the owner of the wind-up cursor was also named Svenn Diagram
this is worth noting imho
21:17 That's just primal-summoning with extra steps!
23:18 If this is leading to some stupidity about it being my fault that people are falling for your rabble-rousing, you can shut up right this moment.
23:41 Yeah, you wouldn't do anything stupid like goad some patsy into summoning a pri – oh wait!
OMG you really went MNK! I dunno why this makes me happy, maybe because MNK is my main.
Oddly, the one thing the Garleans don't do as standard practice is enslave people. Work them to the bone, demand exorbitant tithes (taxes), sometimes engage in compulsive military service (draft), and definitely abuse the general populace- there's large factions of Garleans that are incredibly Garlean Supremacist or have persecution complexes- mass resettlement and repression… but not actual slavery the way we in the US think of it. People aren't actually bought and sold.
I'm sorry, this Mask-alike is too funny to me: "Oh, you're wrong if you think we're gonna summon a primal. We gave the crystals to the Amalj'aa so they could do it."
My dude, that's basically the same thing.
– Durmin decided being a Jumping Bean was too tiresome so now is time to punch people to his height
– that fake-Griffin doesn't sound suspiciously familiar…
– Oursourcing a Primal is still making one Primal too many, also Ga Bu & Van Hydrus are good examples as to why you don't wanna summon random Primals at the Garleans
23:51 I loooove the voice acting for Papalymo! He's so expressive with his tone of voice
Dan: "I think…. We're due for a change"
All of us: * gif of the guy from avatar foaming at the mouth from excitment *
"we're not going to use the crystals to summon a primal to fight for us" … no? … "we're giving them to snek people who will summon a primal to fight for us" … COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.
Oh man. I’m getting so excited for Stormblood, Durmin! It’s underrated and I know you’ll do it justice!
