Happy Final Fantasy Friday everyone!
This week's question is: of the main FF14 cast, who would you love to see get their own spin off game?
Ah, Auracite
I think their introduction was in FF Tactics?
Magic stones used by the 12 Zodiac Braves to drive away the Lucavi demons
According to the church, at least
It's time for Durmin to end this little Triad! This is your Spoiler Free Lore Comment!
Regula van Hydrus seems like a pragmatic person. The containment facility will not hold Primals to his satisfaction, so he has abandoned the mission to collect this technology. Honestly, teaming up is the only good option for the Scions. If the Garleans are tempered, it will make the job of defeating Zurvan that much harder. Not that it makes much difference, since a significant fraction of the 6th Legion are already under the Primal's sway. It's actually surprising that Regula is willing to have the Scions tend to his soldiers. Not all Garleans trust magic, even if it's wielded by their conscripts. This includes healing magic that might save their lives. This paints Regula as a fairly open officer among the Imperial Army.
Much like the other two, Zurvan is based on the concept art for the FF6 boss Demon/Poltergeist. The name Zurvan comes from Zurvanism, a sect of Zoroastrianism which worships a god of infinite time, Zurvan. The differing English translation of the FF6 name is due to the Japanese name, kishin, not having a direct translation.
Time for Unukalhai's backstory! Durmin has, in fact, seen what remains of Unukalhai's home, when he faced the Cloud of Darkness. Unukalhai's name is another name for the star Alpha Serpentis, of the Serpens constellation. Serpens is associated with Ophiuchus, the serpent bearer, and they are sometimes considered the 13th Zodiac sign. Final Fantasy Tactics will remember that the description of auracite is very similar to how these stones work in that game, and that there were 13 stones in that game, corresponding to the Zodiac. The Serpens stone held the Lucavi Elidibus. This hints to who Unukalhai's "master" is. the game, the constellation Ophiuchus is increasingly associated with Elidibus.
And a final note: Zepla (a prominent FFXIV community member, and recently an evacuee from Ukraine) performed a song dedicated to this boss (or rather, the Extreme version) years ago, and you can find it on her channel! – https://youtu.be/u1kdeZMo8v4
Love Y'Shtola just brings up the obvious when Urianger said about wearing masks
Gotta give props to Paken and Kaenuchi for fighting in very nice suits. Fuyu and Theia have the very good looking armor, too (I like plate armour, what can I say?)
(Also, for the record, I don't think I've seen "bad" fashion from DTC this whole time. Sometimes I forget to give props, sometimes it's not my flavour. I just always know Fuyu will eventually show up, so there's a bit of a "oh, I know the person has good sets!" anticipation)
35:20 Just Y'shtola being great again.
Two things are starting to get me thinking (just musing, no spoilers pls):
1) Unukalhai mentions that in pre-void champions used auracite to capture primals… wasn't that basically what Moen wanted to use to permakill Ascians? Catch and break. That would imply that if it wasn't destroyed, the Ascians could "leak out" and influence any bearers.
2) I love/hate how Urianger's dealing with Ascians are going completely unchallenged. Unukalhai was challenged about his master (and his master's intent), but when he said "oh, I met my master via Urianger", precisely nobody blinked. Suddenly it was fine… after all Urianger wouldn't deal with the "bad guys", the very crew that killed Moen, right?
I said it at the start of this trial series but I will repeat it here: please, PLEASE do the extreme trials for Heavensward. Do them unsynched and off screen, it doesn't matter, you just need to have them done so you can get the extra lore quests at the end of the Shadowbringers role quest series.
Zurvan too gets a creation myth, and has one of my favorite fights.
"Called forth by a Mercydian race of centaurs, this deity is believed to command the boundless expanse of eternity and thus stand above all other gods in existence. Charged with the punishment of wicked divinities, Zurvan is also the embodiment of victory over injustice. The eikon's nightmarish aspect reflects the terrible inevitability of his triumph, and records describe the "Demon" striding into battle girded head to foot in armor formed of unshifting flame."
Zurvan's unique theme is "Infinity", which is a pretty neat track… though the chiptune/electronic fusion is all that's notable about it. Something more noteworthy is that primals and trial bosses have their own special weapons, which glow or create effects when you craft weapons from their materials (also known as mats). Zurvan's specifically is themed around his carapace and has red and white nodes floating around it- a weapon absolutely perfect for Black Mages, as they have the fire/ice shift going for them.
OOOHHH!!! I noticed that Aren was playing as a Blue Mage during the Zurvan battle!
For those who don't know, Blue Mage in FF14 is known as a "Limited Job" that can only join premade parties (so no use of the Duty Finder) and as of now has a level cap of 70 (when normal classes have a cap of 90). But considering how incredibly varied and completely overpowered a Blue Mage's kit can become (and essentially doesn't have to worry about level sync), it is only to be expected.
Hello there… Hollow Knight sent me here
I wonder what I next and I hope I haven't missed it again…
A recap on void lore so far, as it is a bit scattered:
Vague spoilers
New important info first, the void was once a reflection of our World, but at some point a series of eikons were summoned and subsequently imprisoned in "Auracite." The people with the power to imprison these eikons eventually used the power of the imprisoned eikons themselves plunging the world into darkness. This seems to have resulted in the creation of what we call voidsent, like Diablos and the Cloud of Darkness.
The void has reached out to affect the history of Eorzea two major times, fist in the time of the late Third Astral Era they made a contract with Xande to help empower him enough to concur Mercydia. This contract would have let the void eat our home but the Fourth Calamity ended those plans temporarily and Durmin stopped them permanently.
The second time was during the height of Mhach in the late Fifth Astral Era, where it was common for void mages to form contracts with high level voidsent in exchange for power. This practice even continues to some extent in parts of Ul'dah and the thalamaturge's guild. This is but one step in the War of thee Magi and Durmin foiled most of the consequences of this by helping the Redbills.
There are also numerous random voidsent summonings throughout the land and the game in general. Tam Tara Deepcroft, Hauwke Manor and the Great Gubal Library all have void influence in them. These are usually lesser voidsent, those notably weaker than others. It is commonly believed that there is a pretty rigid hierarchy within the ranks of the voidsent, according to the lore book.
The ARR primals were very much single elements.
The HW primals are more and more feeling like blends of two elements. Fire and Ice. Wind and Water.
So we go from solidly single element, to probably being two element sets, and then…
Stormblood. Asks you instead to think about what a primal IS (or isn't).
Shadowbringers, now that's all about one thing, in various aspects (except for the side quest that's once again about elements and remixes things).
Endwalker, Sure, we're the primal slayer, but the picture has zoomed so far out now, I can hardly even see the single pinpoint in the map that started everything.
Durmin and Team Pointy Ears save the day again!
– yeah that's a lot of lore dropped, & thanks to the previous Pirate Adventures we know what Ulalakai means
– they might be an evil empire, but can't deny Garlean's loe for pragmatism does come in handy
– huh, is not everytime the Red Fire Guy gets to have Ice powers too
– Dan's utterly disappointed reaction at Urianger of all people is comedy gold & so Genuine sounding
pets Unukulhai You're a good kiddo.
I like how van Hydrus helps show some more nuance in the Garlean Empire. We already knew through Cid that good Garleans exist, and Nero, well, he's complicated. But Hydus is both loyal to the Empire yet is also reasonable, which is a good thing to have in an antagonist.
So Dan has two side stories left for Heavensward? Very curious what they'll be. I'm guessing the short one would be another job quest video, perhaps Monk, but the other one? Could be something I didn't do myself and so can't think of it, since I'm not sure what other major side quests are directly related to Heavensward.
11:45 Does no one here have access to Raise? Durmin can be discounted because A) Dragoon and B) AFGNCAAP (or "faceless protagonist insert"), but anyone else? No?
13:05 His Garlean soldiers, I think you mean. You haven't been present for the messes (plural) in Ishgard, I don't think. Yeah, no, this compassion towards his own is not surprising.
13:31 It occurs that the Echo is a Hydaelyn thing… and we just heard from the Word that Hydaelyn's resources are being severely taxed, if not depleted. If She runs out of juice… does the Echo?
14:52 Eh, there are worse day jobs.
… so Unukalhai is Galactus. Got it.
35:24 That whole sequence – culminating in Krile doubled-over laughing – is priceless. Just saying.
Did that Ragusa judge guy have LEDs inside his armour? I'm all for self expression but that kind of thing can only have drawbacks. Power consumption. That itchy, prickily kind of heat that isn't warm just uncomfortable but right there and all over all the time. Having to go through every bit of armour everytime one light goes out, and the wiring issues alone. It just seems impractical for something people are only going to see if you get hurt really bad. Like you are banking on getting hurt looking cool.
39:16 Hold up. The "Primals" and the "Eikons" are different beings? So far as I was aware they could be conveniently lumped together in a single category – forged by faith, summoned by crystal, slain by those with the Echo, etc. And now you're telling me those two things have a salient difference?
I can't believe they brought a Blue Mage!
I cant wait to see whats next for our intrepid WoL
