The wiping city! seriously though ozma was such a change of complication from every previous boss that was basically cruise control.
Dan, once you unlock the Parrock area through the raid series, you can come back at any time as far as I'm aware. Just have to go back to that flag in the Sea of Clouds
Dan said he'll see us on Friday, is there not going to be an episode on Wednesday?
Welcome back Playfriends! Durmin and friends are headed to The Wiping City of Mhach, and your spoiler free lore comment is here to help!
Okay, the duty is called "The Weeping City of Mhach", but upon release, the number of instant death mechanics rolled out in this Alliance Raid swiftly gave it a reputation. Add in the fact that only a fraction of players had cleared this duty meant that, anytime the Weeping City comes up in your roulette rotation, people will have largely forgotten many mechanics. So many deaths are typical in runs. But for a prepared group like the DTC, they can handle it!
Radlia & her crew show that these pirates aren't really up for things like voidsent from beyond the realm. I'm honestly surprised they're capable of doing any piracy, since adventurers are routinely hired for security.
Arachne, known here as Arachne Eve, first showed up in FF4. Named after the Greek myth of Arachne, the weaver who was transformed into a spider by Athena, Final Fantasy has usually depicted her as a scantily clad drider-woman.
25:27 – The infamous stack marker. While stack mechanics have appeared before this, patch 3.3 (when the Weeping City was released) is where this marker got codified. This attack causes all players in the zone to share the damage of the attack, so more players makes it more manageable. New players running from the group because they've never seen this marker before is a time honored tradition that results in the new sprout dying. Fortunately, the devs are revising older content with the modern markers, so new players will have an easier time understanding mechanics.
Honestly, I think Forgall is the most difficult boss in this Alliance Raid. The zombie mechanic is initially unintuitive, and it's easy to get caught up in things during the fight.
Ozma is named after L Frank Baum character in the Oz books. Ozma first appeared as a superboss in FF9 in all its spherical glory. The key strat is to drop the boulders "back", and if there are two, "back and left (clockwise)". There's no particular reason for "left", just to keep everyone keeping the drops separated. This "back and left" methodology from the playerbase has been replicated for other duties for this type of mechanic. Also, if the complications of mechanics in this fight don't seem difficult enough compared to its FF9 incarnation, don't worry! There's a Proto-Ozma in an optional duty later in the game, which is *much much worse*.
Calofisteri first appeared in FF5 as a boss. Sorry, that's all I've got, just watch out for the hair. And the chasing beams. The beams tend to get people.
We can also talk about two recurring enemies we've seen in this series. Diablos, from the Greek for devil, first appeared in FF8 as an optional boss, which can be defeated to become a GF/Summon. in FFXIV, Diablos first appears in the optional dungeon The Lost City of Amdapor. If you recall Amdapor was the city that wielded white magic, opposing Mhach. The other recurring enemy is Ferdiad, named after the rival of Cuchulainn. Ferdiad appears as a boss in FFXIV in Amdapor Keep, a separate optional dungeon. Both will appear next episode!
Props to the two absolute madlads in the alliance who went into the raid as Blue Mages. I mean, I guess if you're going in with a full, planned out 24-person crew, it's the best time to try going in as BLU…
Sometimes you can really feel Final Fantasy's fondness for the Star Wars archetypes.
Lol the inner paleo nerd in me is both happy to see a Sarcosuchus in a videogame, but also mildly annoyed because the model isn't very accurate, and looks more like a big Crocodile XD.
Congrats on clearing the Wiping City of Mhach! And with only one death! And, checking the footage, it wasn't even due to a mechanic! Just a DoT that you had on you. You're getting a lot better at this. And doing raids on a class you're not terribly familiar with while explaining them and trying to present is just levels upon levels of difficulty modifiers, so I'd say you're getting pretty good at this! 😀
Adding a little bit to the references: Cait Sith is also in FFXI! In particular the precise same model used in XIV is the XI model!
I haven't exactly played that game, by suffice to say some lore nerds fans of that game that I know certainly were very amused at Cait's appearance.
I wonder if the raid mechanics being more thematic has anything to do with them feeling more interesting. As someone who does not/will never play but is enjoying the story, the mechanics look the same to me. If Dan says it feels more interesting though, then it probably does
14:04 "Ray-Meel," I'd say.
37:56; OH, this guy. Right, there are Mechanics for Dayyyyys with this one XD; 39:16 Oh! Yeah! There were /LOTS/ of wipes when I watched someone trying to do this when it was current.
First off, I had an absolute blast doing this run with you! It was nice to revisit Mcach again (I've only run it a dozen or so times since the time when "Wiping city" was no longer accurate.
Secondly, my brain was absolutely expecting Grunty voice around 36:30 when reading the Epigraph's rhymes.
man, i love this funky bunch of Sky Pirates. they didn't even pretended to give the Important Weapon to the villains
@20:15 KAW! ack.. I mean HONK! Thank you, Dan, for leading us in the raid! It was great fun going through this thing in a coordinated group, rather than the usual pick me up groups. It's always better when everyone knows what to do and is expecting the weeping city. (can't belive I waved in the cutsceen)
So, I know I've done this raid… but I have no memory of it. I think I died so many times I blocked it from my memories…
Cait Sith is ALSO the summon "stray" in ff6, but you gotta dig a bit for THAT.
Thank you for recording this, in spite of the fact the BLUE ANGELS are in town… I wouldn't be able to, I'd be at the show, or at least in a nearby park or someplace I could watch some without paying.
Oh, hey, they finally acknowledged the giant portrait.
Cait Sith mentions a "terrible sphere"
Dan: FF9 fans are you ready for a treat?
Me, excitedly: OZMA?!
Very happy to see that terrifying ball buddy 😀
"Ponder the orb everyone."
Ozmashade preps Assimilation
"Ponder respectfully!"
I love how the way Dan's doing group content here reinforces that Durmin Durami is the Eorzea-famous Warrior of Light, and other adventurers are just incredibly excited to be on his team.
Air show? Buzz cut Garlemaldians spewing colored smoke from their whiz cutters to the strains of "Brute Justice?" What kind of country-fried rube is still impressed by that?!
I'm hoping that with Nintendo recently adding Kirby 64 to their online lineup, I'll stop being the only person getting major Kirby vibes from this raid. I mean, look at it: There's a boss fight on a donut-shaped platform near the top of a black pyramid against a geometric shape that attacks with lasers! Tell me that's not at least a little similar to Kirby 64's World 2 Boss! Am I crazy? None of my friends see it!
Fun fact: the Red Bill's Nest IS accessible outside of the raid series. There's a Redbill Standard you can use in the Sea of Clouds in the same spot as before (X:6.2 Y: 5.8, Z: 1.5) near the exit to Coethas Western Highlands. There's a point of interest pin on the Sea of Clouds map called "The Parrock" that shows where specifically it is if the coordinates aren't good enough for people ;P
Ozma is probably the second of third hardest 24 man boss they have released in the game, and notably the only one with a (Savage) version in the game. I will also note that mid phase of the Ozma fight resembles the Floating City of Nym, making some people theorize that Ozma essentially ate Nym, hence its more scattered and lacking ruins compared to the other two big players in the War of the Magi, ironically Nym is the only one with survivors into modern day.
20:42 You can see that boss once the gate goes down if you look to the N NW (top of the screen in Dan's video at 20:31 ). The mountain will block it by the time you hit the trash mobs. 🙂
Utata is my new favorite FFXIV character 😅
Cats also have that effect on me.
12:02 Is it possible to get that outfit as a glamour? asking as a non player
This particular Cait Sith is probably more a reference to the Cait Sith of Final Fantasy XI than FFVII as the model used here is the same one used when Cait Sith was introduced in the Wings of the Goddess expansion storyline.
During this episode, inside my brain, I could do nought to quell the shouts of a thousand GDQ audience members.
"…OOOOOOORRRRBBBB!!"
love how one of the dragons was doing a Freya cosplay ! with the Vivi follower too!!
Something about that cat's physical proportions still makes me feel profoundly uncomfortable.
FF9 Fans: Fun facts! Its a bit hard to hear, but the OST for the Weeping City of Mhach has the core motif from the FF9 battle theme in it – just slowed down by about 50%.
I like Durmin's fashion today, very piratey.
In the intro I thought at first you were leading up to telling us that Dominic had gotten an upgrade to their ultimate form 🤣
I was expecting Leffy to say "but we be pirates!" When horny dude threatened cyclops lady's life. Ah, What a shame.
If nothing else, the airplanes add to the ambiance
While Cait Sith is a summon from FF6 then subsequently a character from FF7. This version is likely more of a direct call-back to the FF11 WotG character (Same character model and all) I love how they sprinkled in lots of call-backs to 11 with various enemy types and such. Love the playthrough, especially now it's getting to content I haven't done in years and had skimmed through the story to catch up.
Dan: Man, if Dantalus was able to have, like, housing in a locale like this? That'd be pretty rad. Just a little sky island!"
Me: "A skyland?..skisland?..skysland?.."
The one poor AST in Alliance B who fell off (at least it appears) at 43:24, I salute you.
41:23 Ponder Respectfully could be a pretty good Hellsguard Roegadyn name lol
16:37 ok I can't with his dumb little walk here. On most characters it's not that noticable that they don't have an animation for turning and just walk in place while rotating, but with Cait Sith he has such a rapid little scuttle that his turning around looks ridiculous.
I remember the zombie mechanic of the 2nd boss specifically not because I had done this before, but because I remember Yunalesca from FFX having a similar mechanic where you needed to have Zombie on your party or you'd wipe.
