  1. This is off the top of my head so I might have gotten a few things wrong but:
Minfilia took on the name she currently goes by – at Thancred's suggestion, no less – to throw off Garlean spies. Her father, Warburton, was a member of the Ala Mhigan Resistance who worked undercover as a spy among the Garleans. He came to Ul'dah 20 years before A Realm Reborn (15 years before 1.0) to deliver classified Garlean information on the Meteor project to the Sultanate, but was killed when a goobbue broke free of its restraints during a parade and went on a rampage. It later came to light that the goobbue's restraints had been intentionally broken as part of a conspiracy among some of the Ul'dahn elite to gain power by having one of them, Niellefresne, subdue or slay the goobbue and gain the acclaim of a hero. In the end, he was only able to do so with outside assistance (that being Thancred), and an innocent man died, orphaning young Ascilia and depriving Ul'dah of crucial intel they could have used to perhaps prevent the Calamity. Regretful of his actions, Niellefresne sought to use a forbidden artifact, a sword known as Heartstrike, to revive Warburton via necromantic means, but before he could, he was assassinated by a Garlean spy. F'lahminn was his girlfriend and one of his co-conspirators, and it is her guilt over everything that happened that lead her to adopt the now parentless Ascilia. Ascilia, growing up, had some too-close-for-comfort encounters with Garlean agents, and eventually Thancred convinced her to changer her identity to evade any imperials digging around for leads on Warburton.

  2. I stopped the msq to do a bunch of side quests between ARR and 2.1. I recently just got back to msq and am about where you are. I really recommend you take the time to run the coils of bahamut, the gentleman quests, and crystal tower quests. They're high quality and feel important. One is even important enough to have voice acting and prerendered cutscenes near the end. I'd love to see them in this series.

  3. Hey Dan! If you would like to improve readability for the Let's Play, here's something you can do:
All windows in the game, even the crafting progress, map, armor preview and etc. can be resized by right-clicking on them at the top and choosing 'Window Size'!

I'm sure people can perfectly read stuff like the crafting going on as they are now, but for such a big screen with so many things going on and people who might watch on their phone, this could be useful!

  4. Durmin returned to us quicker then i expected, but i doubt alphinaud will grow on me if he gets even more stuck up then he already is… Didn't like him during the raids stuff as well, and i liked the story we got from the raids ^_^

  5. Yay! Durmin is back!
I would recommend reading the Side Stories (Tales from the Calamity, Tales from the Dragonsong War ect.) found on the Lodestone to anyone who wants more lore. Just make sure not to read too far ahead : )

  6. Glad to see you back! Watching your story play through got my wife and I into FFXIV! We’re almost to Heavensward now so it’ll be fun moving along with you as you pick the play through back up!

  7. I've mentioned this in a comment before, but I think playing through the Lancer/Dragoon job quests before Heavensward adds quite a bit to the story of the expansion. It might be worth doing an abridged run through those quests in this series.

  8. yeah!! so good to have this series back! i can't remember where i was in my own playthrough when the last episode came out, but i've since completed all available msq on the free trial (i'm sadly too poor to afford the full game rn), got two of my seven alt characters (i had a lot of fun w the character creator, okay?) through base arr, and am now working on leveling crafting/gathering classes. oh, and i'm taking my dad through the story via new game+.

i remember the arr patch content being almost more of a slog than base arr, but also it was just so much technically better that it almost balanced out. see: minfilia hugging f'lhaminn here in this episode. that wasn't just an emote! that was actual mocap! also they clearly had time for more than one take per line on the voice acting. and you're absolutely right about the seeds for really great payoffs being established in arr. perhaps it's more helpful to consider arr a fun worldbuilding experiment? i will say though, the class stories that i've played through have almost all been pretty good and engaging, and it was absolutely the rog/nin story that helped me get through arr the first time.

anyways, i look forward to following durmin on his continuing adventures!

  9. Yay! I forgot this was coming back today!

I picked up the free trial and got to the entrance to Shahasta(? First multi-player dungeon) and dropped off. I don't know if that's because ARR is kind of dull, or because I wasn't playing "right", or because I had already seen all the ARR MSQs, or because it really is best played with friends, or some combination thereof. I'm a little disappointed that it didn't grab me but I'm loving this series and maybe it's best that I don't get sucked into an mmo, lol

  10. Man, I always forget how much ARR Alphinaud is… like that. F’lhaminn, on the other hand, is actually one of my favourite side characters – she’s got roles in a few side quest plot lines, and she’s consistently pretty great

  11. Durmin is back! Yay!
Also I want you to take responsibility for the fact that right now I actually purchased the game and I am actively playing it.
And I know that the focus of the series is the main story, but there is a sidequest line I'd consider you a true gentleman (*wink wink*) if you were to find the time to show it.
