  1. After the rush job I did yesterday, today's No Spoilers, Not Necessary for Enjoyment of the Story Lore Comment…. has nothing to do with Durmin's adventures. But let's talk about the holidays of Eorzea!

The reason for this is that, as this episode releases, Eorzea (and by extension, the community) is celebrating The Starlight Celebration. Starlight typically runs from mid December till around the end of the calendar year (always check The Lodestone for actual event dates). The Celebration dates back to a group of war orphans who were offered refuge in a military barracks during the winter solstice. Those orphans would grow up and never forget the kindness, and eventually distribute gifts to children around this time of year. In Eorzea, the gifts are now associated with The Saint of Nymeia, a white haired, bearded man robed in scarlet. (Which war, you ask? A war that still rages to this day. A war which Durmin will soon learn of.)

The next holiday is Heavensturn, which celebrates the Far East's Lunar New Year. Typically, an envoy from the Far East coordinates celebrations in accordance with their traditions, and making plenty of puns regarding the zodiac animal of the new year. This coming year will the the Year of the Tiger!

Next up is Valentione's Day! Lisette de Valentione is the Emissary of Love, a title that I'm pretty sure she made up for herself. As you can guess, it's all about spreading love.

After that comes Little Ladies Day! This is analogous to Japan's Children's Day. It's said that centuries ago, Sultan Baldric Thorne jailed a common family due to their part in assisting the princess with her attempts to leave the palace and see the city. The princess's railing against this injustice opened his eyes to his despotic nature, and the Sultan released the family, and vowed to pay restitution. Once a year, the Sultan would take up a common child, and treat them as the royalty of the day. Since then, the celebration of children has spread, without the horrible jailing of innocents involved.

And just in case you weren't sick of eggs in Animal Crossing, the next holiday is Hatching Tide! In the wake of the 6th Umbral Calamity, it was said that a group of Archons were responsible for saving a great many peoples and repairing the world (Archons as in, people of note, not otherworldly beings). Recently, a Miqo'te had a vision from the 12 gods of Eorzea, and painted eggs in celebration of these Archons & fellowship in your fellows. And the tradition has caught on.

Next is The Moonfire Faire, which celebrates the heat of summer! Swimsuits will be abound, and beaches are frequently menaced by Bombs (as in, the Final Fantasy enemies)!

Then comes The Rising. This is a solemn occasion, remembering those who were lost in the 7th Umbral Calamity, and the chaos that followed. The Wandering Minstrel is key to these events, and frequently interacts with the players. And by that I mean both the player characters, and the players themselves, as the Minstrel is modeled after Yoshi-P, and this is the celebration the Devs use to thank the players for giving FFXIV a second chance at life.

Lastly, we have All Saint's Wake. Legend has it that this spooky celebration started when the Saints, some adventures of renown (who are apparently depicted on guild leve cards), were invited to partake in celebrations in the godly realm. Bereft of their guardians, people put of spooky wards to prevent monsters from destroying their homes. Now, it's a celebration of the spooky.

There is also the somewhat "floating" holiday that is put on by the Gold Saucer, called the Make it Rain event. The reasoning for this differs from year to year, but it's accompanied by the Gold Saucer increasing payouts for all games.

  2. Dan, Carrie can probably corroborate this, via Desert Bus and Lrr/Jacob Burgess.
Please be aware of "Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa" syrup or lozenges to assist your poor throat for all the heavy voice acting you do for us. <3.

  3. Out of curiousity, for the people who already play FFXIV, what are you characters like?

I play as Ryme Qiani, a Keeper of the Moons Miqo'te. She started as a Thaumaturge, before moving through Black Mage to Red Mage, with some recent dabbling in Dancer and White Mage.

  4. Spoilers I guess, but I'm spoiling a pretty dumb reveal…

So later on, the game makes a big deal about how people can use crystals to summon beings other than primals. They act like this was some huge twist, but when I reached that point I vaguely remembered the game already giving us that info at some point.

Sure enough, in this episode we hear about people trying to use crystals to summon Rhalgr, who is one of the Twelve Eorzean gods and very much NOT a primal. Is this supposed to be foreshadowing or something, or did the developers just forget they wrote this arc when they were making that big reveal later on?

  5. Dang. Durmin's gear looks very nice.

First comment: 4:16 "Durmin is getting his steps in today." is just a fun little phrase

Second comment: 8:22 chomping at the bit are we? I jest.

Third comment: 8:48 server issues have been an issue from what I heard. Personally I play after my work day. So at like 1am-4am the servers are pretty fair.

Fourth comment: 12:25 Dan it feels like you are playing more into Durmin and it is great. Please keep it up.

Fifth comment: 13:47 The moment he said craggy area to the north my brain screamed Trap.

Sixth comment: 14:08 Sweet I was wrong. Always good to know

    Seventh comment: 14:28sigh Damn it.

Eight comment: 19:32 Man, Durmin has the bunny girls chasing him all day doesn't he?

Final comment: As always keep up the good work and remember, "Have Fun With It."

  6. This was definitely the point of the ARR story that I felt was weighed down the most by endless fetch quests. I get that the point is to show the character of Little Ala Mhigo and their reluctance to trust outsiders, but I feel the point could have been made in half the amount of quests…

  7. Cache (one syllable) can be used for like supply depots and stuff.

Edit: this one is wrong, and now I'm not certain if what the difference is. 🤣 thanks to the guy who commented to correct me! Cache (two syllables) to the best of my knowledge is a fancy word for briefcase or a fancy kind of briefcase.

  8. There's only much text on screen when you are in a conversation anyway. It's not like we need a lot of screen space to see people standing around. Making the text easier to read is definitely the better move here.

  9. Yes, you do seem to become a detective in a lot of games. You also tend to become royalty and/or get a crown…

(My art stuff is just on the other side if the room. Maybe I should…)
