When we asked Marc ‘Try4ce’ Duddleson from My Life In Gaming to take a look at Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation 5 for us, we were looking forward to an expert analysis from someone who knows the game inside out. And we got that… and so much more. This isn’t just a tech breakdown of FF14, it’s the story of the game from its early beginnings, through its troubled launch, to its relaunch and deployment across multiple generations. It’s a video we’re proud to share with you!

Thank you all for watching this very special video on FFXIV from our friends at My Life in Gaming! Do you play this or any other MMO? What are your thoughts on these kind of collaborations? Are there other channels you want us to team up with? Do you want to see My Life in Gaming tackle another game with us? Let us know in the comments!
I play on base ps4 atm and the only time I've noticed my framerate drop noticeably was with some critical engagements when they are full in Zadnor I guess I can't see framerate that well
I played on PS3… It was manageable. The load times was brutal. But switching in a SSD made it so much better.
Now I'm playing on a PS4 Pro.
Great informative vid.
I see, the "goldshire inn" version of FF…
PS5 is much weaker than what was advertised.
The game needs an engine update
i dont even have a console and i watched this whole thing xD
It seems my subscription to My life in gaming was turned off for some reason. :S
Come on Square do an Xbox version..
Omg that Limsa segment really hits home XD
So…. TLDR. Play the ps4 version on ps5, put it on 1440p and put draw distance to high?
It's probably the hottest game right now. Especially due to the attention from Asmongold playing it. Glad he's on board our community. 🙂
I love it when these two channels collaborate.
Even with a good PC most MMOs will suffer with lots of players on screen. some bottlenecks can't be fixed with new hardware.
32:40 I've encountered this phenomenon myself on the PC version. Specifically at Slitherbough in Rak'tika. When looking towards the east I would get a very sharp fps drop. Down to like 15fps the closer my camera was to some arbitrary angle.
The story in this game is probably the best in the series along with 6 and 10.
13:30 – Is that' why I sometimes see people running circles around the map on some cities like Limsa?
Will this game come to xbox?
Anyone has an idea of where the M1 Mac version (running Rosetta) sits on this scale? Less well than PS4?
What does PS4 on PS5 mean? Does the PS5 store allow you to download which version you want?
my old pc that is roughly as powerful as a base ps4 reaches 60fps, why cant the ps4?
I need help with the name of the soundtrack they played in the video 🙁
Can you revert from the PS5 version to PS4?
Who in the right mind would use rumble on 14?
Very informative video!
Its just AMAZING to see almost all of my favorite channels is joining ffxiv! 🙂
That's cool shirt my dude.
Final Fantasy XIV – BEST GAME
Final Fantasy XIV – Award-winning MMORPG.
Play through the entirety of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward expansion for FREE with no restrictions on playtime.
The slow burn of FFXI was certainly more rewarding than FFXIV is now, but it definitely lacked a "log in and accomplish something in an hour" feeling, and still does, really, even though the game is largely solo-able now. Still wishing there could be an offline single-player FFXI version with all the story and mechanics in-tact, but sped up exp/currencies to preserve the amazing stories.
Wonderful video, especially love all the little touches.
@33:00 I guess the reason for this is that the Crystal Tower entry is the end of the map, you looking at it, even with a few players, is still a small part of the map. When you turn to the stairs, you are effectively looking at the entire map.
I could only guess that the PS5 version they simply increased the drawing range, so while looking at the stair you wouldn't "render" many assets, in PS5 it might as well be rendering the entire Mor Dhona and characters behind what the mountains are blocking your view, no?
Same with Fort Falcon @32:50, where you start looking at the gate which is the end of the map, then turns to the open area, which, while line of sight is blocked by snowstorm effects, it's still you looking at the entire map.
So they probably opened the range of what the game renders too big.. You might be as well rendering all characters and enemies without even seeing them. I remember when watching Boundary Break that game devs normally offload whatever you are not seeing on your line of sight, while anything in your line of sight is loaded, EVEN if your vision is blocked by walls or fog. MAYBE that's the case?
JESUS those load times on PS4.
I am SO glad I run this game off an SSD on my PC
Try is among the top of my favourite tech youtubers and hearing his voice was a pleasant surprise, indeed!
Anyway, as a huge FFXIV nerd, a couple notes on Try's comments here:
I have recommended to many friends that "don't like MMOs" that FFXIV can be played (almost) entirely as a single player game, and is worth doing so. You'll need to party up for duties (dungeons etc) a fair number of which are required for progression in the story, but these typically take less than 30 minutes each (minus wait time to be matched with a group if you don't have friends to play with). Other than that, you'll be on your own playing through the story like any other Final Fantasy game. And there is little to no grind involved; the main story quests and your class/job quests should provide you with most of the experience you need to get your first job to 80. You may occasionally have to run an extra dungeon or two to put you over the line to the next level to continue the story, but this is rare. The days of running around outside killing stray monsters for hours just to gain a level are over; this isn't EverQuest.
Yoshi-P (Naoki Yoshida, the director and producer of the game) has confirmed that the design of the Crystarium is based on that old tech demo!
Shoutouts to Trygil Forksworth and Tryfork Gilsworth, the real homies 😂
What Try says here is a little confusing if you're not familiar with MMOs; dungeons and raids are two different things in FFXIV. Dungeons are instanced 4-person content and raids are instanced 8- or 24-person content.
As someone who has played FFXIV on PC since the 1.0 beta and recently upgraded to a GTX 3070 and 1440p monitor….. the game doesn't really look that different at 1440p vs 1080p. The graphical fidelity is simply not high enough to take advantage of the higher resolution, which should surprise no-one as the game was designed with 720 and 1080p in mind. This may change with Endwalker, and should be expected to change if they discontinue PS4 support in 7.0 two years from now, but as it is if you're on a PS4 Pro I would recommend just playing in 1080p; the smoother, more consistent framerate will benefit you way more than whatever miniscule boost in fidelity 1440p gives you. That's just my opinion though.
Try is correct in his surmising that the combat effects options are really for player benefit rather than any performance boost they might give. For Savage and Ultimate raiders especially, turning down or off some or all players' combat effects cuts down on visual noise and confusion and makes the battles easier to parse. There's no real reason to change them unless they annoy you in town or are overwhelming you in dungeons.
Bruh…. "shield" scene??? for real??
man an engine overhaul would take a lot of worth but man it could be amazing
A missed opportunity to talk about the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV that has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime.
Good effort at the beginning but I didn't feel it, it lacked something I can't just point out. I wonder what… hmmmmm
What server are you playing on? My limsa had always been packed even before the wow players started playing
I like the rumble when you walk I honestly don’t see the issue with it
Why do you have to give a historical background on the game before running the test? Stop wasting people's time with nonsense and get to business. It isn't hard.
Wish square Enid would bring this to Xbox series S/X
Funny how this was in my recommendations because I brought the game on sale with the expansions
Now I’m having another addiction help!
"FIle Fantasy"
