They made DRK’s abyssal drain and carve and spit share a timer so that it would be less busy (you used to weave them both), so that you can weave in more mitigation (The Blackest Night). this is why they got rid of the damage on their gap closer too – less need for weaving. But now DRK has a problem with weak mitigation and TBN is not as great as people think it is. Plus, it comes way too late at level 70. Magic only mitigation is not fun because no one likes weird conditionals as to whether they’re going to be lackluster at mitigation compared to other tanks which always work. Warriors heal is just too strong, they are probably getting nerfed.
DRK feels awkward in so many ways. It feels bad on most content where it’s just 1-2-3 waiting to recover from no MP. Yuck. Plus crap mitigation options. It does slightly more damage, but it’s still not a DPS. Perhaps it should have been.
Like I refuse to believe that you feel obligated to give an opinion of a class in this game when it seems like you've barely grasped the concept of the most basic functions in gameplay for XIV. 1. You click your abilities which I think is worse than playing on a controller. 2. You keep pressing Souleater before its prerequisites when it's the finishing move for your 1-2-3 weaponskill combo. Thus doing less damage and not benefiting from the heal it gives. 3. You claim that Flood of Shadows is unpractical when it's specifically used as a damage ability AFTER you've gathered up a full pull. (Which you aren't doing.)
If this is genuine, I HIGHLY suggest you focus more on reading your tooltips, and going through the Novice training method you can find next to any town-inn and then use common sense from there. Please, because you'll become a hindrance to those who at least put the minimum amount of effort to understand the game. If you don't want to put in the effort, go do duty support so that you're sparing the other players.
(please forgive me if I am wrong I am still quite new myself)
I have no idea if you have played any melee class before so I will help you. All melee classes have combos that increase your damage and might give other effects, usually these combos are some of the first abilities you get.
I play ninja so I will tell you the basic combo I use on ninja, this should still translate into other melee classes,
I start out by using Spinning edge, this is the first ability in the "rotation" which does 180 damage.
Next I use Gust Slash, ordinarily this ability does only 100 damage but if you use it right after Spinning Edge the ability will do 260 damage.
Then to finish off the basic combo I use Aeolian Edge which does bonus damage if I am facing the back of the enemy, if used without the combo it does 160 damage (100 if not facing the enemy's rear) but with the combo it does 340 damage (280 when not facing rear)
I hope this will help you in your experience playing melee classes.
I also suggest using a controller as you seem to like the analog camera movement, it will be much easier for you to use abilities if you don't click them. if controller isn't your style then you can always adjust the keybinds to all the hotbars to allow you to use the abilities faster. I also suggest looking into mmo mouses, the ones with all the side buttons, they help me keep on top of my abilities while not having to move my hand all over my keyboard.
Hey ! you showed up on my recommended and its interesting to see this from new players point of view. Iv played DRK as my main job for 5 years now tanking in the Savage and Ultimate raids, ill try my best to answerer your questions. Your first point about wanting more heals, unfortunately DRK is more suited to players who either know the fights already or have a good understanding of the game in general as like you pointed out there are different mitigations (physical and magical). Not all tanks are like this though Warrior is king of healing. although it is possible to solo dungeon boss's with a DRK if you know the job well a Warrior can do it so so much easier. Paladins have a outright healing spell called Clemancy you can cast on yourself or others and Gunbreaker has a Regen. You might find Warrior to be more fun while your starting out on your tanking journey. With Carve and spit and Abyssal Drain being on the same cooldown i think someone else already commented that they used to be on separate cooldowns and was only put on the same one in Dawntrail a few months back. the main reason for them being put on the same cooldown is when your solo targeting theres really not any reason to use abyssal drain and the same for carve and spit for big group pulls when they were separate we did use abyssal on single target during the Burst window but add all the other off globals as well as mits to press during burst window it is kinda nice not to have it separate. The reason the Cooldown is 60 seconds is to do with the 2 minute meta ( i wont explain that here its going to be a wall of text already without it lol) but simply it is so it lines up with other jobs party buffs oh and abyssal drain heals more the more enemies it hits so go big 😉 Flood of shadows hitbox is actually way bigger then the animation i wouldn't worry about trying to be accurate and lining it up perfectly, i hits a little behind you also so yeah just don't worry to much about it. with the different types of mits , with 2 of them being magic only (Dark mind and Dark missionary) man do i feel ya there this has been a problem for a while its unfortunately just going to be about learning the fights and which are magic attacks there is a setting you might find useful though that shows you your incoming damage taken and what type of damage it is. about it not being a really good tank, thankfully the game is balanced in such a way that you can use drk as the main tank. is it a better off tank ? absolutely! in fact that last 4 tiers of raids i have been as off tank DRK. Oh and my favourite thing that keeps me playing DRK, the absolutely massive burst it has its opener rivals most DPS jobs that alone still has me hooked. Sorry about the wall of text haha but hopefully this answers some of your questions. always interesting to see a fresh perspective on the job iv spent so long on. i hope your enjoying the journey 🙂
nah if you know what you are doing, drk can be okay. You need to know when you have to save your mp. If you check good drks, they have the best parsing numbers for tanks in high end game duties. But yeah, drk feels like a bruiser. Not a tank. Not a samurai. But a dps job with more resistance and shields. Maybe they should add a new class of jobs. Something between DPS and Tanks like other games have.
Ok, so several things you said are incorrect. You shouldn't be running around as a tank, you should stand still as much as possible, run through the enemy and then face them away from the group, which causes them to group up tight enough for Flood of Shadow to hit everything, it's not a cone, it's a VERY wide Line AoE. It has 1 magic specific mitigation, just the 1 personal one, and 1 group magic mitigation. The Blackest Night, your level 70 skill, is one of the best mitigations in the game when used right, not only do you get to absorb 25% of your health in damage, you also don't lose out on DPS if the shield breaks, because you get the free proc afterward. Overall at certain levels, yes, DRK is squishier than other tanks, but it can also kill things faster generally; Flood of Shadow does pretty significant damage. DRK, like GNB also thrives more on boss fights than it does trash pulls, but it's not bad at them, it's just not as comfortable with them as PLD and WAR.
The reason you don't think it's a tank is because you're new and you don't know any better, but that is something you should remedy. Learn about the job, watch videos about it's interactions. It has more than enough Mitigation, it's a mitigation tank not a healing tank, if you want a healing tank go pick up PLD(later levels only) or WAR(level 56 and up). Also I hope you're using Arms' Length as a mitigation on large melee pulls, that 20% Slow slows their attack speed, not their run speed, which means you get hit 20% less often, which gives your healer longer to react between rounds of hits, which means more DPS on the mobs, which means mobs die faster, means they can't hurt you if they're dead. Watching the footage in the video there were several things you could improve on as a tank, mob placement for one, the not running through and turning them away from the group, using AoE on single target boss fight… Remember your job as tank is not just to hold aggro, but make it easier for the entire group to do their jobs as safely as possible.
Make sure to use your damage mitigations as well as arm's length.
Tanks aren't a dps class or a healer class. Instead they reduce incoming damage while also being well… tanky.
Drk also has the best damage mitigation that turns into dps if you know what you're doing. (I think The Darkest Knight) and can be placed on anyone.
Their invulnerable is also much different than the other tanks.
The darkest knight has literally the most op shield compared to the rest. Dark Knight is a lot more complex.
If you want heals then players should play gunbreaker or warrior
They made DRK’s abyssal drain and carve and spit share a timer so that it would be less busy (you used to weave them both), so that you can weave in more mitigation (The Blackest Night). this is why they got rid of the damage on their gap closer too – less need for weaving. Fake: Dark knight sucks
Truth: Dark Knight is PEAK
This video is super old aint it?
Is this a bait?

Hard watch ngl
False.
Its the only class in the game with a counter attack mechanic (TBN/Dark arts) and that makes it PEAK
Only shit players rhat hate fun like xeno will moan about DRK state and want it to be a replica of warrior but with purple skills
DARK FN RULZ!!!

"Why ______" because DrK.
Easy button = Warrior
DRK does suck compared to all the other tanks.
