You know, maybe I have seen one of these guys, but if I did I definitely thought they were a player. I have a chat boxes so them talking wouldn't have given it away. I'll keep my eyes open for now on.
You know after seeing this I decided to do a little research. That Roegadyn retainer has it rough. Not only is he paranoid about his master watching him, but apparently whoever his master is hits him as well. Yikes!
There's actually a questline to find one of those missing/late to return retainers! She was being attacked by monsters, and after the quest you can see her around collecting materials!
You know it was weird cause I had seen a few of these guys around and wondered if they was people's retainers… That's pretty cool none the less

I'm one of those players that cosplays as retainer when gathering and mining XD
Don't remember where I saw it but once found a retainer by a market board who said out loud they bought some menial thing and were done for the day.
Do you need to do a quest to see these? I haven’t seen them anywhere but i want to >:(

I did see one, one time in coerthas central highlands. That makes sense on some of the stuff mine bring home.
Only time I've seen a retainer was at the Wolves den. I was thinking they must be working on gathering stuff for their master.
I actually feel bad now since I have my retainers running on endless 18 hour ventures. I think tomorrow I'll have them rest.
