  1. I have only one thing to say or well, ask

    Why?

That's all I want to know. Subjectivity and objectivity aside, I just want to know and try to understand – why?

  2. I do not really care about this, they violated TOS stuff, well Square will take care of it and I will just keep playing the game as regular, I also do not use mods so no worries for me on that issue.

  3. This is actually rather impressive, I mean the level of stupidity on top of stupidity on top of stupidity on top of stupidity on top of stupidity that is required to do something like this.

  4. It advertises an in-game venue but Rain is also an actual nightclub in Austin Texas where one of the billboards is located at. There’s going to be some confusion. And this isn’t a random club either, it’s a popular gay nightclub on 4th street that’s also been in the news lately due to the danger of being torn down for a new condo.

  5. However, I did not see any disclaimer on the billboard itself, so to someone who does not play FFXIV, it might have looked as if SE itself is somewhat involved with said event.

  6. You skipped over the start of the material usage license which specifically says "The use or distribution of the Materials from Final Fantasy XIV and/or Final Fantasy XIV-related services, on your or third party homepages, blogs, social networking services, is conditional upon your acceptance of these terms and conditions." I don't think a billboard falls into those categories, so the rest of the analysis may not matter. Even if it did apply, there's also this line: "You must immediately comply with any request by Square Enix to remove any Materials, in Square Enix's sole discretion;" so Square Enix could just tell them to take it down and they would have to.

  7. are we honestly supposed to believe they aren't getting paid for this? why spend vast amounts of money advertising for something if you aren't expecting to get the money back in some form? yeah no I don't believe that a bunch of people got together and made this plan out of the kindness of their hearts. but mostly I can't believe that no one thought "maybe we shouldn't add the modded bunny girl to our billboard"

  8. A good reminder that Copyright law is fundamentally broken and not aligned with modern technology or natural human actin. Everything is a remix (documentary) puts this pretty well, sad that this sort of natural development exists

  9. Honestly , when i saw this i felt like Venues were getting out of hands. Like.. really? Anyone in their right mind wouldnt do that irl , first anyone who isnt a gamer or know don't ffxiv are probably gonna say this as weird or laugh at it.I showed it to a friend of mine who just heard about the game doesn't know much and said it's so cringe why would you advertise irl a virtual event? and i see his PoV , now if it was an official one , yeah thats fine , its for their game ya know. But it being from players to tell people about and in game event? I feel like thats just a little too much.

  10. They put up the billboard for the press, I would never known about it if YOU didn't bring it up. So the press they wanted was given to them by people like you by calling it out.

Happy, You should have just ignored it, b/c you just gave them what they wanted.

  11. some communities in FFXIV seem to be spiraling further and further into these weirdly sexual areas. Things like this will hurt the game a lot, if they keep happening.

  12. I feel sorry for those who want to play the game with mods and just have fun without the drama of it all. Those people are going to be affected by this in the future. I hope anyone who is involved in the billboard incident is perma banned. This is beyond stupid now.

  13. I think that if they had shut up and laid low about it instead of clapping back in a, let's charitably call it, less than elegant way, no body would be talking about it right now. But they had to clap back, anger the mob, and now it got the attention of everyone, and I'm pretty sure at this point this kind of publicity isn't something SE is gonna like. Beyond the ToS, this can potentially be damaging for the brand as it's a T rated game where Mature activity take place and were publicly advertised and even worse if it gets out of social media and into actual medias, this can turn into quite the shit show with the moral panic crowd in which case SE will need to do some PR that is not likely to be favorable for the perpetrators and can lead to even stricter ToS for literally everyone, even harder crack downs on 3rd party tools, complete prohibition of public advertisement not made by the company itself, etc etc and all this because of a couple of bad apples who can't keep it in there pants or put there foot where they mouth is. So…What did we learn today kids? Don't be an ass to an internet mob unless you want it to massively backfire on you.

  14. So yes they may have ran afoul of ToS in a minor way, but more worrying would be the wider copyright laws, these ToS don't supercede federal and state law. I hope SE doesn't chase them down in that respect. Their only crime is being criminally stupid.

  15. You have to know they only wanted the online meme attention and that's exactly what they got. Like what percentage of passers by actually play FF14, and out of those how many are going look at this long enough to recognize what it is. Most FF14 player would drive by and not even remember the discord or plot address.

The picture itself probably came from the people who bought the advertisements.

  16. I cant wrap my brain around how they thought this was a good idea, legal aside the event is now gonna be crashed just because they put up a billboard, hell im kinda tempted to go and wreck havoc but I know there will be those who actually go and ruin the event for fun

  17. Huh… first time I see a player actually go so far as to get a billboard in order to advertise something that player and the FC have an event… along with exactly where. Also, I really don't think they earned any money from this. At least not by doing this. If anything they lost some. Whether they earn money via Twitch or such… that's another story and I don't know if that actually concerns this at all. All I can say is… what a way to advertise a player/FC event.

  18. The puritanical outrage at a club that offers ERP services sweeping the FFXIV internet community is a lot more cringe than the billboard, imo. There's also no chance this causes them to ban mods as people are saying. Yoshi-P has been "asking nicely" for 8 years, it's not going to change now

  19. cringe aside.
I think what they have done will bring both condemnation and new players to the game.
In hindsight, I think it will be a positive thing from the game.

  20. On the bit about monetization. They are in the grey area due to promoting twitch channels and that could be asking for donations or subs and as far as I know they aren't partnered.

  21. As someone who works in marketing and had to create banners and article advertisments before. There are so many more layers to this onion.
Before something gets public, there is a lot of forward and backward mailing, calls, signings etc. going on. Depending how big the company is, this can take up months and months of work, adapting designs, getting rid of flaws, making sure every little detail is perfect. And then you need the seal of approval from above and if you do not get it, well, start from scratch (more or less).

Without any context given, this looks like it is from SE and not fan-made. Which is the a big problem. As a company, you do not want to be associated with that crap (mods aside, the design is awful). So the company has their name on a piece of crap. Legal issues asside, that this can cause, this stunt is very frowned upon. You don't do this. You do not take someones name and logo and blob it on your own designs and put it in public like that on freaking BILLBOARDS for advertisment. You ask, you go through the paperwork and do this with their permission. This is so unprofessional you cannot even imagine.

And on top of that, none of their staff members knew about this, their response to the backlash (which mostly was "you know that this is not quite legal") was disgusting, disrespectful, rude and so much more. You want people to join this event and have fun, yet you insult the entire playerbase.
I do not know what consequences this will have, but they deserve everything that is comming moving forward.
