Good job getting a guide out there. I've been noticing a lot of the new streamers don't have anything melding, including the one's who knocked out Ultimate content (More than just Rich)
The materia system is admittedly not explained well in game, so I get it.

Today I learned what those white dots are! Wow.
Let's not forget you can bug a friend who has a crafter leveled, to meld them. Because paying NPCs for a full set of melds is… costly. Around 3k per, if I recall.
Should mention that this is only for battle materia
pro tip: Superior Spiritbond Potions are VERY good for making Materia as you play and at max level, are ridiculously easy to gather the items and make them.
10:30 I suspect SE didn't put these numbers in the game intentionally, so that (most) people don't feel compelled to min/max.
for a game that doesn't allow addons it certainly tries it best to have the worst UI on the planet, so much hidden shit or just horribly placed info
i've somehow gotten very lucky with pentamelding.
My main tank is gunbraker. And I put tenacity on it. It’s the only materia that increases defense. I have like +460 in it now. I’m soooo tough. When I’m doing dungeons, I don’t die lol. I can pretty much heal myself while the healer does dps.
It's very much worth pointing out that the difference made by each step of Materia Melding becomes EXPONENTIALLY less noticeable or impactful as you go. Doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, only that the difference it's going to make will only matter to either absolute god-tier players able to leverage the tiniest increase or players who need that increase to barely meet the completion criteria. Anyone in the middle is expending a lot of effort and resources for something they either don't need or can't leverage. Those in the latter group will see vastly greater benefits from improving their general playskill than the overmeld stats.
Melding the Base Materia should always be done because there is no reason not to. Beyond that… it becomes a matter of seeing if it will actually make a difference or not. 1-2 duplicate/exchangeable pieces between Universal and Job specific in a Role can make more of a difference than just overmelding everything.
Of course the whole point becomes moot on gear that can't be overmelded, lol.

I just sell most X and IX combat materia and overmeld VII and VIII and for crafting/gathering you don't need any IX or X currently and no overmelds at all actually since it's so easy.
I never found this anywhere i searched, how does pentamelded 580 compare vs 600 gear or 590 gear with 2 materia slots?
