  1. How far FFXIV and specifically Endwalker leaned into nihilism and despair, entertaining "does the unalive-contemplating person have a point" type talk in the year of our lady Hydaelyn 2021, with 2021 being 2021… was "a choice," for sure. Particularly if someone nopes out before the part where they lean on hope toward the end. I was able to handle it, but the whole time I was playing I kept thinking "if I was one of my friends that was trigger warning/content note conscious… this would likely be a time I'd throw one up." Seriously, like for most of the expansion. If the tone change on the moon wasn't there to break things up, I'd venture to call it irresponsible to not warn people of how dark things got.

That questline you mentioned that gets even darker on an "as a parent" axis, is one that I will likely never do. I'm not a parent, but I have no room in my escapist happy funtime ganes for "things that depress the hell out of parents" type content. Hell there's a TRASH PULL in the 85 dungeon of Endwalker that I often have to just look at my other monitor for the little scene that plays out EVERY TIME I run it leveling an alt job… and I will level every combat job twice with my current spread of alts!

But yeah, FFXIV gets dark, and it's absolutely valid to learn this and nope out, or find out where and how it gets dark and, *gasp*, skip cutscenes.

  3. I have to disagree with you on the financial aspect.

Did you know that the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has a free trial, and includes the entirety of A Realm Reborn AND the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 with no restrictions on playtime?

  4. I don't like sports games. so I don't play them. I also don't get offended when people say I won't like a game because they know I don't like sports games. I feel like people get overly defensive when somebody says "this game may not be for you". I've been labeled gatekeeper and had a lot of vulgar things thrown at me because I noticed that a person wasn't having a good time and said that perhaps the game isn't really for you. x.x

  5. Endwalker and Shadowbringers both made me take a good long look at reality and my life.

I will agree 100% that it's not for everyone. I heard one person describe 14 as a retirement home for those hard core gamers who've burned out. But for those who want a more action oriented game – Guild Wars 2 is an EXCELLENT game with that action that a lot of folks seem to want. Their glam system is also superb.

Financially – I don't find this that much of a burden, but I know some can. Again, I would direct them to GW2 if they need a game that badly.

I'm to the point where I'll log on before work, check retainers, go do my tribe quests (10 minutes total) then if I don't feel like logging back in after work, I can play other games. Patch days or new content, you can bet I'll be logging back in, or if I want to go do a few dungeons – it's there. I LOVE the fact that I'm not tied down to sinking hours into it every day. Time is precious and if you don't WANT to do something, you shouldn't feel like you HAVE to. Games are for FUN.

  8. I agree with msot of whats been said here, and thanks for the new pespectives.
I know a lot of people here in my country that dont play because of the Sub. Where I live 12 bucks its really expensive, compared to WoW and otehr Sub based MMOS that have especial prices for LATAM.

  9. I agree about the pacing. My brother who plays mostly loot and shot games can’t stand the story aspect. He is always complaining about not caring about any of the characters and how long they take to talk and the going back and forward. I don’t mind it as much but since I also came from a loot and shot was a little taken by the slow pace. Two years later I LOVE this game. It’s a rpg for sure and that was what I originally played as a kid. Plus my bun bun it’s soo beautiful! LoL

  10. The thing that bother me the most about FF14 is its lack of traditional rpg elements. You don't really have builds to craft, all warriors or black mages for example are the same. They only differentiate by looks. You can't personalize your character in its way to perform and fight. You only strive for the best gear available and at the end, everyone have the same. In fine the battles are more about platforming than RPG, even if the "role" part is very present in FF14.

That being said, I'm a huge fan, and most notably of the story.

  11. My realization playing thru SHB and EW:
"I would not recommend this to someone who is depressed. Holy shit wait a minute, I'm depressed."

That being said I'm glad I did because I hunger for this games story.

  12. On the point of the sub fee, I don't see it changing outside of maybe combining XI and XIV services and that's MAYBE. At the end of the day, game pass and monthly sub for an MMO aren't the same. Servers cost money to keep up, maintenance costs manpower which is more money, updates, content, balancing. That costs more than games provided via a service which the company in control doesn't directly have to interact with. If Elden Ring is part of Game Pass, FromSoft deals with bugs etc, not Microsoft, as just some random example.
