I thought we were effective mentors to Wuk Lamat, but agree with commenters that there could have been more specific interaction on those issues, and scenes where we help her come into her own. That said, I honestly enjoyed the pacing, including of the first half and loved exploring at a leisurely pace. I also think the Scion participation was totally appropriate given this wasn’t about us/them, but about exploration and new lands and people. They were brought in totally on point in my view for the second half when their specific skills and experiences were needed.
Just don't use the same writer problem solved.
People keep saying we're Auron in this expansion and playing the mentor role. However, I didn't get that feeling at all. There was zero agency. I felt as relevant to the story and to Wuk as a mentor as Kimahri did to FFX.
I definitely enjoyed Wuk Lamat’s character, and as the start of a new journey, it was nice to see someone else take the limelight while we sat back and just enjoyed the ride. We just saved the entire universe from Meteion after all, so I think we deserved that break.
Should of told the voice actor to not go on twitter and call people racists for not liking a song lol Maybe Yoshi and Square on whole should focus on hiring actual voice actors and not activists. Not to mention still being attached to SBI which is a massive warning sign.
I actually liked the slower pace at the beginning…. And Lemat’i is certainly an interesting character in that manga protagonist kind of way…. Certainly less annoying than Alphinaud used to be when he was going through his shonen manga protagonist phase…. My biggest problem is I didn’t care for the ending arc which I won’t comment on for spoilers sake…
Tbh Wuk Lamat is waaaaay more endearing with the Japanese VA (or sadly any other VA than the English one)
This is why I hated this expansion? I do not like being a sidelined character.
When will developers learn that trend chasing is a bad idea 🤦🏻♀️
Personally, endwalker was the end for me, it just ended so well, probably wont come back for a long time. From what I have heard about the expansion, I think people have a reason to be nervous about the change in direction because of what is happening in the current day gaming scene.
This is the 1st expansion I've had to make myself finish, only because I wanted to get to the Arcadion raids. The dungeons along the way were fantastic and I really liked the many, many FF9 references, but the story was just so mediocre. You can definitely tell there was a different writing staff. You cant go from ShB and EW to this with the same staff. Definitely one msq i will never want to slog through again in NG+ or otherwise
I dislike people using their identity as a shield but no its not their whole personality, they think you're going after them with your thousands or even millions of angry gamer voices because they are Trans and that isnt fully false. Find better criticism guys.
Saying that "The Voice Actor/Actress is only reading the script" is kind of a cop out. While yeah, you should not harass anyone for their performance, truth be said, Wuk Lamat's Voice Direction in the English version was just flawed and subpar, no matter how you look at it. The way she talks, sounds, and the lack of general emotion and flexibility in her (Wuk Lamat) voice is just outright disappointing, specially when you compare it to the voice acting in the other 3 languages. Voice Acting is so much more than just reading a script. It could be that the Voice Director is the one who didn't direct the VA properly, or that the VA just had a subpar performance on their own. Either way, the truth is that the English Localization this time around is of worse quality in general to what we were to expect from ShB and EW. Now, add that to the fact she has by far and away the most lines of dialogue of any character and you acquire a recipe for disaster. Personally, I don't think Wuk Lamat is a bad character. I just think she's a character with potential, handled wrong and pushed to the spotlight far, far, too much. Had they've given time for other characters to shine, for Wuk Lamat to properly develop as a character instead of magically getting stronger and more capable despite doing nothing to acquire such strength, had given it time to make sense of her inferiority complex that they sort of just forget about… there's so many points in the story that just don't feel up to par. It's a shame it turned out this way, but I have faith they'll steer the story back to a direction players and devs alike are happy with.
I love how you used the MG2 reference because when i played Raiden i was so mad thinking "When doni get to play snake again" YET at the end of the game when Raiden got his sword and we found out he was born to be used for war. I grew a fondness for him even 100% his solo game.
I can see what the game has done with Wuk and I was surprised to see the hand full of negative remarks, but people tend to criticize more than say something positive.
Im looking forward to seeing Wuk's progress. As well as her siblings.
The mentality of criticism and hating poeple for being transgender ect needs to go, as does the mentality of always assuming you know why a person was hired and that gender is their whole personality. Just most of the responses to this kind of thing aren't helping. Also the various phobias of LGBTQ+ need to go it all needs to go.
To be fair on the personal attacks point – feels like everything is construed as a personal attack nowadays.
Well, from what I gather most people who has problems with the story are pretty much glossing over it. Asking them about specific detail, and chances are they will either don't know or made shit up on the spot. That is not to say they are entirely at fault, it is the writers job to construct interesting narrative for even those average players can somewhat enjoy, but DT delivery kinda flat for the most part. The localization didn't help in this regard, making this the best expansion to play in JP since ARR.
"the real hero remains the WoL"
as we are made useless all throughout DT and Wuk getting credit saying "sphene"
this is going to be the topic for the foreseeable future isnt it?
After beating gods and the embodiment of despair, Please tell me what people expected to be a threat to the warrior of light right after we did a some thing so incredible?
It’s interesting of people don’t understand that in this expansion; because of your feats, a prospected ruler for an entire continent is asking you and a few of your fellow friends to help them go around their continent and learn about the cultures and peoples of that new continent. so this new ruler can learn what is important to their people, their cultures and understand its diversity.
Normal people stand no chance against the warrior of light. so yes, they took a backseat and acted the role of advisor and bodyguard, and by the end obtained an artefact that can help you traverse through different shards.
In the real world, you’re not the main character.. so why would you be the main character all the time and a vast world like a ffxiv all the time. Chill out people I’m sure square enix has some thing and incredible in-store for us.
Its times like these were I really don't like Japanese corporate culture. Yoshi P basically has to lie and make up reasons why the expansion was bad instead of saying, "Yeah SE fucked us, most of the main team didn't even work on this, the new writer fucked up. The job guys fucked up." At least those are my theories for what happened with this expac. Which is why Yoshi P keeps insisting 8.0 is going to make a bunch of changes right before releasing 7.0
I am not far into the MSQ because as much as I want to continue I just…can't bring myself to it. Story wise, I do not mind taking a backseat and whatnot, but I do not like feeling inconsequential. The first leg of the MSQ could totally have been done without my character and it would have been the same, only with a bag. Or another character could have brought the stuff with them from point A to point B.
I don't need Universe-level threats to have a good time, but I am sure we can settle between that and being a glorified quest bag or unnamed bodyguard? The range is HUGE if you ask me!
WoL had extremely superficial “mentor” moments. But the story was fleshed out poorly in that respect.
"don't make personal attacks toward the voice actor" maybe if she doesn't make personal attacks toward the community that if they don't like a certain song they are deemed racist. that's when it became personal
I didn't have much issue with the voice acting since it wasn't as bad as some ARR voices were and figured it'd get better over time. Then the voice line during the final trial completely interrupted the vibe of the fight and threw off the rest of it for me because it was so poorly delivered.
I also figured she'd be like Lyse and not show up too much after the main expac since her story is pretty completed. She's got a country to run now. I never once felt like WoL was a mentor to her though. More bodyguard/friend. We gave some advice but not enough to be a mentor.
Very little hate I see about Wuk Lamat has anything to do with the VA being trans. Only people I see bringing it up are people defending her or using it to decry those with complaints.
I'm pretty certain that Wuk Lamat had more spoken dialogue lines of vomiting noises, than most of the Scions had actual spoken lines….
Also having your very first introduction of a new city/expansion (5 or so mins into the game) being VOMITING NOISES is not a good introduction either…
I played with Japanese VAs; I found her annoying. What little I heard of the English VA makes Wuk sound slightly more annoying, but overall, I don't think the voice acting was the issue. Without good writing, good voice acting is just the equivalent of trying to serve wheat bread as if it was a cake.
Edit: I hope he learns the right lessons from this. I am having fun playing, but I cringe ever time I have to do that final trial. I am not sure I will be arouns at release for the next one if the patch content doesn't get massively better.
Hot take, but I really liked WoL taking the supportive role while still being the MC. It was a nice break, which is what the adventure to Tural was supposed to be. They didn't go with the intention of saving the world AGAIN, they went to have an adventure lol. I think the WoLs role this time around was very comparable to Tidus in FFX.
Blah blah, stupid excuses for poor writing, blah blah, we did our best its your fault if you dont like our shit.
I absolutely love Wuk Lamat and am so glad they created such a new and beloved character. Much love to the writers and character creators of Dawntrail ❤️
I’ll never forgive them for taking Krile’s purpose this expansion. Like how heart breaking would it be for her to find out her parents left the charm for her to come back and finish their fight against the preservation system. Even worse to find out they died and were forced into it. They should have been a boss she was forced to fight in a solo instance finally freeing their memory and souls before moving on to stopping sphene. The story literally writes itself and yet they completely failed on all accounts
The best time I had with the narrative was travelling along with Erenville. Even though Shaaolani definitely has some of the most earbleeding voice acting besides Cid (especially ARR Cid), it was nice to just do some adventuring without some impending doom for a bit. And while I feel most of the playerbase hates that, it was great and I hate how short it was. Not to mention, I hate how Erenville and Krile lost so much well earned screentime to Wuk Lamat. All in all, I still found it more satisfying than SB's MSQ
So everyone in the comments just wanna be the mainherolordgod. Omg just say that but with less words.
No it is the fact that she gets into our face. "speak with Wuk Lamat" occurs 139 times in 100 quests. She also has the VAST majority of lines. They needed to give us a little space from her.
My feeling of the story is that wuk lamat was forced into it too much. Some parts she had NO reason to even be there or to endanger herself.
She may have looked up to us but we have not really mentored her much at all. We just let her do shit, sit back and relax most of the time and just watch. We don't correct her, we don't tell her to find another way of resolving issues.
Wuk lamat tried talking too often. At some point talking is just not going to work. Like at the final trial. Time for talking is over. And wuk lamat just didnt want to accept that. But the WoL barely did anything
For a world saving individual we did surprisingly little. And it felt boring. We also never really demonstrated our true power to characters like wuk lamat, or the blessed siblings. Sure i loved how we could mock him in Yak'tel…. but we never fought him. That was wik lamat who did. We just wat hed how she was being swarmed by opponents. Wich for a "hero" is a little bit sad.
So alot of people bitch about dawntrail I think it was fine, was good no was it amazing no it was a decent, but wuk is not the problem,
1-Why doesn't wuk know her people
Simple its the classic sheltered princess trope, but it was done with good reason if people took the time. They remember oh yeah she was going to get murdered as a baby. So Zoreal took her in and trained her up
2-Wuk is almost a mary sue
This right here is beyond false. She isn't close to one she isn't super smart, she has her faults and understands them, Hell the only that kinda makes her one is the weird power increase she gets
The problem lies with the story maybe it be better if the dawnservert story took up the whole game, with the WOL personally training Wuk along the way. Like the WOL and her getting up early in the mornings. Maybe a few more high stake fights
The alexdrina part should of been a after patch thing much like the ZERO storyline.
The 5 first levels the story felt like it was written for a telenovella. The motion sickness. The o lets decide to go off on my own just as someone decides to kidnap me even though always travelled as a group before. The forced discussion to say shes not ready then a day later shes suddenly ready to be the successor as if a persons growth comes so quickly. Its like they wanted this to fail just so that the next expansions can only be better.
My problem with Wuk Lamat was the fact that in the 1st act of the story she is supposed to attain the traits of becoming a ruler, but she just throws those things off in the 2nd and 3rd act of the story with her naivety.
There are multiple characters that multiple times threaten to put her people in danger and she always just seems to want to resolve things peacefully when there clearly isn't a way to do so.
That is beyond frustrating to me and its something a lot of characters are guilty of in the ff14 story as a whole and it is something i always hope they change.
Honestly I wouldn't have supported her to be the leader. Actually I wouldn't have got involved in this in the first place.
Look the idea of our WoL being a mentor is not a bad one, however the implementation was what the problem is.
Wuk Lamat had potential to be a really interesting character but we really were on baby sitting duty the whole time. It really didn’t feel like we taught her anything. By the end of it I genuinely felt worried that she is the one leading an entire nation now. She is so aggressively ignorant to pretty much everything in the world that isn’t about food, fighting, or friendship. She tells Sphene to leave her people to her now. Okay, so how do you plan to run Alexandria when you don’t know ANYTHING about their nation other than the small snippets we got? Don’t know, we will figure it out with the power of friendship and understanding!
Yeah. Tural is doomed.
Also I’m not saying anything about the VA themselves but Wuk Lamat’s voice really really wears on you pretty quickly.
Remember folks, I haven't felt like a cardboard cut out since arguably realm reborn. Heck, even an npc in a role quest side story has more pressence than your own wol.
I'm sorry but no, the localization/VA defense is garbage. If they are comfortable enough dragging sociopolitical or ego driven narrative for these people they can take criticism. They are trying to gaslight us that it's trolls or bigotry no it's pattern recognition and we are holding their feet to the fire to know we are the consumer not their worshippers
If he didn't have the time to gather and read feedback from the community then at least they need to make sure his assistants did a good job. It seems like they didn't OR he's tired and couldn't care less so downplaying and deflecting was the only way. No one, like absolutely not a single soul out there complained about WLM's inferiority complex and in fact, if they wrote her to be a confident character, it would make her 10 times worse to deal with. It's a seriously problem that him, as the game director is incapable of understanding the feedback and issue of WLM's writing. So freaking out of touch. I'm not sure what's happening behind the scenes but it seems to me DT MSQ wasn't play tested or polished before release (despite the long delay lol)
