FFXIV has continued the same expansion release formula for too long.

tbh i agree, even the msq is getting stagnant now. The more i looked at it, the more the DT story really just took the same formula of EW and did it again. Story with a midpoint change, even the final trial was literally story wise the same structure as the final trial of EW.
You rush MSQ, some people just skip it. You play for 15hrs daily during first weeks and now "there is no content". I mean… Obviously. If you play less, you won't have content issues. They don't design the game for you. There are a lot of things to do. Yet you are not interested on them maybe. But there is content. Most playerbase is made by casual people and they don't need hardcore content to do. I agree with some things cuz I also lack of some content since I've been playing for years. But they won't change anything probably. After all, when 8.0 comes… You'll play for a thousand hours even if they add the same exactly formula.
It just needed a mediocre MSQ for us to reach to this conclusion? We always had the same formula since ARR. Its always 3-4 months after the inicial release. Its always story, trials, raids, treasure maps at launch. In a way I understand, this cannot go forever. But why this wasnt adressed sooner, its a bit sad in a way.
I looooove this game but am BEGGING for Square to innovate in this game.
The Overworld needs a revamp & we need more engaging community content akin to Eureka/Bozja. All around this game needs to stop trying to not be an MMO and needs to embrace that it is an MMO.
I left the game as soon as I saw how they treated the "Relic" grind in EW. It's sad, but until they get off their asses and stop being lazy, I'll never return.
I think all zones should be exploration style zones. The zones seem super pointless outside of story and their usual fate system has been trash content for a long time
They have been so lazy with this game for a long time but the sad thing is too many people use this as their real life so the money keeps coming in
prob disrupt the assumed flow, make it so 8.0 has a level 110 singular raid, that if with all 8 people having not finished MSQ upon clear, all get an achievement reward which permanently won't count if MSQ is cleared first. it will force the raid only players to level grind before touching the raid before touching msq, and simutaneously screw over plotwatchers in the dutyfinder where they will be told to "LOL use the trust" when queues dont pop. reclears give big rewards as long as theyre done without MSQ completion, then when the raid teir comes out, all those raid only players have to haul ass through MSQ, inflating the race to world first to also include racing through MSQ🤣
Do the expansions really need to change? I dont think so.
I would assume that the vast majority of players play the game on and of over the week. Chatting with some people, doing some roulettes and be done with it for the day.
The game was never really designed in a way to be your only game you play, if you play every day multiple hours.
If you want overworld content then play some gw2 for example.
If you want long time grind play some wow m+ or PoE or War Thunder or Factorio.
I for my part am pretty happy with how the content cadence is. Progging the Savage tier, then either doing old ulitmates or just walk way from the game until the next patch drops.
Even with doing more then the majority of players i have enough time to play other games without the feeling of missing something in ff.
I was hoping that a new story arch meant some changes to the release formula or content. Something to spice things up even just a little bit. I haven't even felt enthusiastic enough to finish the MSQ for 7.0 since it didn't feel like there was anything special waiting around the corner.
TRUE AND REAL
I honestly think flying mounts.. kind of destroy all forms of exploration in this game.
I agree that most content is "stale", but it's not a make or break thing for me. After all, when I buy the expansion I know what I'm getting into. But CU3 could shake things up a bit. I would love if FF14 changed from tab target combat to full action like PSO2NGS or Lost Ark.
The ultra focused on group content in open field or social activities MMOs are koreans. Try T&L. It might be just what you're looking for.
Personally, I thank God I can just enter the game, not talk to anyone, get into matchmaking, play according to my class, knowing what >I< need to do and clear content without talking to anyone; to not depend on anyone to be able to get what I want, aside from some limited content.
I still don't have my Osma mount and I'm not getting it soon. The amount of energy and coordination needed to get into a big side raids is just overwhelming, specially because the difference in time zones. When NA server is alive, I need to get to bed and sleep for next day's work. I already use what's left of my patience and life force to work and deal with everyday problems. I really don't want to go big brain spreadsheets and spend time organizing Baldesian Arsenal or Bozja Savage or Eureka farming.
I just want to play something to spend my time and relax. FF14 gives me what I want. When I want something more "engaging" I go play MOBAs and curse/get cursed by others or I go to Savage Raids.
The time of MMOs where you almost confuse your real life and in game life is over and that's for the best.
ew had a falloff of midcore player not causal aka 70% to 80% of playerbase while it the polar opposite for dt .eureka and bozja are midcore content it didnt help anything but keep the 15 % midcore in the game the 70 to 805 of causal did really try or care for it(some did eureka and bozja but the vast mayority didnt ) it midcore content it not casual freindly for causal so to expect ppl who dont play to be challanged or to get stressed to do that content wont happen and dt has promosted to cater to midcore and ignore casuals (and with the new dung ruin already existing casual content) this will come to bite them in the ass.for god sake MOST PPL DONT CARE FOR RAIDING IT A NITCHE COMMUNITY when will CC learn this fact most ppl dont do even normal beside ew 40% done normal raid all other barely had 30% ppl do it and savage and ultimate is done by less then 5% of player they arent important number in the long run.avarage player arent midcore it casual avrage would be the most normal player midcore are not average they are nitche less nitche then hardcore raider but nitche non the less. and ew only failed the midcore not casuals and the "community " that angry at ew for failing midcore doesnt repesent the playerbase but a loud minority of player.feild operetions arent easy for most casuals and arent freindly for casual for god same the eureka last 24 man raid alone is proof the fact you LOSE XP AND LVS IF YOU DIE is proof .
The other issue with the "engage with raiding" argument is that doing the same 4 fights until you get your weapon and set is boring as hell, no matter how good the content itself is
You got some majorly wrong in this video. It's not the same as Heavensward, Stormblood and Shadowbringers, it's WORSE than it was before. Remember the patch cycle used to be 3 months before patches. Now its FOUR! A changed added on the slowest expansion ever made in XIV history, Endwalker. And might not sound like much but that one extra month is such a deal breaker. I used to sub monthly for years now I feel like I should unsub for a month and then dont sub until the next patch drop. When it used to be 3 months I could spend a month/month and half doing the new content and be happy knowing 'Oh its just one more month I can pay for it and wait for the next path' now after doing the same amount of 1 and a half month content they are asking you to wait TWO months for it. Its a lot of time and twice as much money.
Aside from that I agree with the video, the content on the game been kinda subpar. I'm not even feeling like returning to 7.1 just because most of the initial content is just end-game raiding. Mind you I dont mind those, I did a cleared savage raids before. But because there's so little content to do outside of raids, I dont feel like trying the raids because I will be paying 15 USD a month to pay 1/2 days a week or 3 to 6 hours just to do raids. I could use those 60 USD to buy one or more ACTUAL good games that have hundreds of hours of content.
The game needs to change things up, absolutely. For the longevity of the game, they can't keep recycling the same formulas and not continue to innovate. XIV has been at its best when they try to do new things, especially content that is more mmo in structure. Just like you said, Bozja, etc resulted in huge growth, it was fun. They need to push the envelope and do new things, now more than ever. Reward structure continues to be a huge problem. I know they have acknowledged the failures on rewards, but we still haven't really seen any changes.
This is why I quit the game after 10,000 hours played. The endgame content is always the same, there are basically 5 classes with about 2-3 flavors for each one (tank, healer, melee dps, ranged dps, caster dps), pvp has always been bad. There is next to no reason to explore the world outside of crafting and gathering, and I want to have more uniqueness to my characters, not just going to
thelatest content to get the same piece of gear everyone else for my class has. There is no joy in finding magic items. If it wasn't for the phenomenal story and amazing music and lovable characters, I probably would have lasted maybe half as long in the game. Yes, its probably fatigue and burn out in some cases, but after that amount of time, being able to predict what is coming out and when, having no joy in new classes because they're all the same, and them dropping the ball with the Hrothgar and Vierra for a long time being gender specific, no helmets allowed, limited hairstyles, and claiming that they have no plans for future races–which, fine, I get it–but that just saps even more potential joy. Then, Blue mage and Beast master, two jobs I would have been most excited for after playing 11 for years, they were added as limited jobs.
After 10 years of playing, retiring after the Endwalker main story was the best choice I've made in terms of playing that game. The main story was phenomenal, and made for a fantastic exit point. If others still find joy in the game, all the power to them, but for me personally, they never addressed the issues I felt persisted over the years.
Yeah, I had to take more extended breaks with Dawntrail because after playing the game since ARR, it just feels the same aside from the updated MSQ each expansion. I understand why SE does it in order to make an experience people can anticipate what's gonna happen each patch and plan their time to enjoy it, but it still feels boring to me to know what's roughly coming each patch in an expansion. The one change I am looking forward this time is the fact that they're adding a lot more content vs previous expansions (field zone, criterion dungeons, crafting area, deep dungeon update, blue mage update, beastmaster) on top of the usual stuff. Maybe I've just been playing 14 for too long, but if the formula doesn't seem like it'll ever change, then I might need to take an even longer break and maybe come back after skipping the next expansion.
at this point it just feels like a lot of xiv players are just subbed cause its part of their life routine to play xiv but after dawntrail launch I personally couldn't do it anymore, it's become a single player game cosplaying an mmo.
For me? its mostly Jobs being unexciting, makes us rely heavily on Content creating Content Draught due to a stale format. Definitely not asking Jobs to be changed to require a PHD degree in Neutron Physics to play them? but not this bland… If Jobs are exciting? and more importantly? " Crack Cocaine addictively Satisfying " to play? that amplifies " ALL Content " at all difficulties and at all levels. Right now? idc how mechanic vomit Content gets or how Content is presented due to how homogenized my Job has become
People keep saying FF14 respects your time. But the reality is that I feel like it doesnt respect my money. Its asking for 15 dollars to even have the privilege to log in for 30 days. But only gives you enough content for like, four. And one, maybe 2 days a week for reset. I've seen people try to argue that gposing and fishing is enough to validate the monthly sub system. Its insane.
Damn….. the most ironic part about this is the release of FFXI raid. If they were to learn about what makes a "mmorpg" it should of been this expansion if theyre researching the "golden era" of mmo's.
ps, its not like this conversation hasnt been brought up even in 3.x and onward. Most people just chose to ignore it. I pray one day this topic gets more attention and the formulaic nature of ffxiv goes away.
you hit the nail on the head, you're probably going to be attacked for your comments sadly. with as much money as square is losing i doubt they will funnel more money into the game. which is funny cuz it seems like the only game that constantly makes them money.
I completely agree. I did all three savage raid tiers during Endwalker. Eric in P1S was my first ever savage raid fight I stepped into that was still current content. By the end, beating Athena in P12S wasn't even fun. I was just glad it was over with. I am questioning if raiding is for me now and I haven't stepped into a savage or even an extreme trial during DT because of it.
But, because of that, I only really log in to tend to my plants in my house. I have nothing to do! I cannot wait for the exploration zone to get here… I spent so much time playing around in Bozja during ShB. I miss being able to play with my friends in FF14 like that.
Even as someone who does everything in the game (level up all jobs, doh/dol, mount collection, FATE grinding, savages and ultimates, and even a bit of RP) I still have long periods of time when I have nothing to do in the game, I cannot imagine how boring it must be for more casual players, like imagine waiting for 7.1 as a non raider and only having 3 hours worth of content
I believe a lot of this feeling comes from the fact that end walker's grind content was the island sanctuary and that did not work out that well. I think they have learned their lesson to lock people in their own instances and not just give them a weekly spreadsheet to manage. But we shall see with the new patches.
the game now is just MSQ and Raids considering this game is sub based these need to be good the moment one of these started sucking the issues in the game become way more apparente the game to me weidly enough feels like genshin impact in the sence where you really dont need to interact with anyone if you dont want to you can literally just go with trusts, its not an MMO its an always online Single Player game
The game was great for my first expansion but I think there is a decent amount of people are in the same boat as me. We started just before Endwalker, got to have alot of time experiencing the great story, and then around 6-12months after Endwalker is out we finally finish the story and start trying some raids/bozuya ect/doing relic weapons; once you do hardcore raiding for one current patch/research how to do relic weapons do them abit/do some bozuya the veil over your eyes is just practically instantly ripped away from over your face and you realize "Wait, so they just do the same shit each and every expansion? like pretty damn close to a 1:1 ratio..?" and when Dawntrail came out and the dissapointing story came it just compounded onto the lack of hope you already had after realizing how much of not an MMORPG FF14 really is and well, we cancelled out subs so long as we don't have housing, or are guilted by friends to keep it active just so you can stay in contact and "hehe wanna do DaiLy RouLettEs TogEhteR for The 894th tIme?" where everyone will inevitably mention something like "haha I'm to fall asleep x.x" "omg I nearly fell asleep just now haha" without realizing how bad of a problem that statement itself is.
SE needs to pump out more content that isn't just seasonal events and moogle tomes inbetween patches after the initial expac launch and content drought pre-8.0. Pre Dawntrail wait ended up having FFXIV exhaust all of their collab events.
With the extended patch cycle, they should unlock the raid tier on the odd patches immediately. It should not take about 30 something weeks or a patch and a half for the savage raid tier to be unlocked to farm gear. One of my main complaints with the limited and unrewarding rewards structure is that that gearing up more than one job/role in savage takes forever.
FFXIV needs to start either bringing in some of its expansion selling features into X.0 or start adding more than just 2 mounts to chase from Extreme fights.
By X.05 Relic weapons should begin and cap out at 10 levels under the raid weapons, similarly introduce relic armor that can be a middle ground between base tome and tome augment gear. So in this case 725 gear for the 7.0 raid series. By 7.15 allow you to upgrade these to 735 and in 7.25 have these relic weapons and relic armor become augment-able and usable in the field exploration content. So there is something to chase and build to for future content that isn't just going to be thrown to the floor by 7.2.
They could create a rogue like dungeon crawl that starts you in the Lv.91 dungeon and you can climb your way up to the Lv.100 expert dungeons but each dungeon progressively gets harder and harder, and each boss killed provides a choice of random buffs & monster enhancements. Something that could also be introduced into X.05.
To add something i thinking lately (mostly influenced for wow the game i playing instead) its the itemization of the alliance raids in general could be more important for the "endgame", so we have more variety on doing stuff to gear up, and not only the same 4 savage 8-man raids over and over again, same with criterion dungeons, or something like Bozja/Eureka, idk, they have a lot of ideas for multiple games out there, just use something and not the same every patch. Ty @KaiyokoStar very nice video.
The middle of the road being so absent is a terrible pain point of the game. I dislike WoW in general, but the fact they offer Mythic+ Dungeons mean that I can do some challenging content that does not require the level of organization that a raid entails. It's also repeatable content, which is important, because in FFXIV there really isn't much repeatable content that also feels rewarding. I really think the small curve of item upgrades (where theres only 2 real tiers, of tomestone level of dungeons, and raid tier thats about 10 levels ahead) is far too limiting.
Without an engaging MSQ, the community has to look for another reason to fill in the subscription cost vs game time value. And it just inst there, not without what was the focus. Our Story.
Now is Wuk Lamat's, Yoshida just doubled down on that. So at least for me, im not logging in till a few weeks before 8.0.
And only if the MSQ shows any sign of coming back to us, or at least the scions.
Dawntrail ruined the one thing that made XIV stand out the crowd and reach the place it did, and that was the MSQ.
They sadly tampered with their fundamentals, and the reception is overwhelmingly one sided: Main Scenario is bad, thats it. Its flawed on many and fundamental levels.
The only reason im still subscribing other than weekly reclear, is the modded version and friends.
the main appeal of the game right now is the msq and raiding, and with the fall off of msq quality since endwalker and the absolute stale job design and raid encounters all of my friends have left the game to go play something else. as a player who has payed monthly sub since stormblood (and that doesnt include expansions, collectors editions and mog station item) i just feel more and more disrespected by the developers and am honestly quite close to throwing my hat in and giving up on the game too
