I don't see why just because they are in the sidequest that Cyella and Unukalhai couldn't get involved. They can just quickly introduce them without spoiling all the events of the sidequests. They've done this before with job quests and the main story quest. I think another barrier is just because they are on the First and the Scions are on the Source, so even though Unukalhai can open a void gate, it won't help us get to the Thirteenth with the Scions.
What we are told about Zero's mother is that she was pregnant with Zero when she was "infected" or "tainted" by Darkness and continued to fight even afterwards, which is why Zero was born half Voidsent. Other than that, we aren't told much for certain. It makes for a fascinating possibility in light of the Spectral Necromancer. Thank you for being so impressed by the concept.
Elidibus ( the seat) was charged with "steer mankind on their true course at times you will stand with us and at times you will stand against us " . He wore the white robe with the red mask, and was in almost every patch. He explains in SB. If I recall he says I only take their will to fight along side me..
