FFXIV: Dawntrail Viper 1 to 100 Leveling Skills Guide

Note: Viper already is slated for some changes. However, the rotation is likely not going to change.

New? Got too many skills? Made the mistake of using a level skip and have no idea what anything does? Just hate reading? Try this guide out!

This guide seeks to teach new Vipers how to Viper properly, without getting too deep into optimization. I’ll be showing off and explaining some openers but not delving too much deeper beyond that and general skill usage. Endgame is a long way away and there’s lots to learn along the way. Start slow and work your way up one skill at a time! Then, graduate to more advanced guides.

  1. Local YouTuber Exposed As Fraud: Wesk Alber claims his Viper hotbar setup will "make sense at 100" yet gives reasonable explanations for his skill placement at 80 and 90. Experts are calling this the greatest disaster since the Mother Porxie proximity aoe incident.

  2. Shout out to Wesk for always giving us good info!! My only problem with Viper,Not a SINGLE defensive skill. Thought it was weird considering all the raid busters we have to deal with . Still love the class tho it’s super busy

  3. So why not open with Dreadwinder? I thought that this would function similarly to Samurai's Meikyo opener, allowing you to put Noxious Gnash, as well as both damage and speed buffs up ASAP. It would also serve as a good spot to weave your pot into.

  4. Oh, thank goodness – I've been trying to make sense of this new job and have been failing miserably…

10:58 — Yeah… no… you lost me… sorry, my brain just refuses to grasp this job…

  5. I'll save you the effort.

    Lvl 80-89: Lost Rampage.
Lvl 90+: Actually learn the job because you just got your fun button.

And don't go back to any level sync below 90 because the job is just so dull without Reawaken.

  6. i still don't know how i feel about the game running me through the combos for me, but i think I'm starting to understand why now. would have to go full piano fantasy 14 all over my keyboard with how non-linear those combos can get

  7. When they described this job, I immediately said “no fricking way am I playing anything this busy. I screw up the SMN rotation and that’s dumb easy.” Then the trailer came out and I was totally unimpressed with the look of the job. Then came the media tour stuff and I was visually impressed, but also stunned by the sheer amount of abilities and said “HELL NO.” Then I finally got my hands on it… omfg, it’s soooo easy to pick up. It flows SO NICE. Never did I imagine myself loving a melee job this much lol Literally half the difficulty of this job is figuring out where to put your buttons. That took me a good three hours. Once I did… I never looked back. Everything became fluid and smooth. My burst phase is set up in a zig-zag motion so I actually get that kind of serpentine slither movement effect when using my controller. It really does play smooth and I have shitty internet with terrible ping and I can double weave just fine on this job. Other jobs… that’s an entirely different story. This job though? VERY well designed. PCT is easily my new main job and I cannot wait to see your opener for it, but VPR is a very, very close second and my new go-to solo job for old content

  8. Viper has been a really unfortunate job for me in terms of hotbar. There is a certain way I need to lay out my base skills for them to make sense but that makes the Reawaken window really awkward: Shift+R > Q/R > E/R > Shift+F/R > F/R > Shift+R
The only thing that gives me solace, I am not the worst offender in my friend group.

  9. Love that there's an AOE "opener" section! Since pulls are more dangerous than bosses, I hope you include sections in future guides on how to best use all your cooldowns for trash pulls, since as a new player that was something I was always confused about, even once I had my regular opener + rotation down solid!

  10. This seems like a fairly good place to bring up my rant: I really like viper but it feels so so bad when it gets synced down. I hated only having the two combo buttons when I got synced to 50, 60 only gives us serpent's tail, 70 gives us dreadwinder but it still feels so bare when compared to other melee or even tank rotations, it's not until 80 (well 75 but rounding to level caps makes sense) that the job feels like it is actually doing something.

  11. One of my favorite thing with every new expansion is watching your job guides!
Doesn't matter if it's a job I play. The way you explain and structure your guides is just so nice to watch.
Thank you for doing these even though they take a ton of work! It is much appreciated!

  12. Yippee!!! Congrats on releasing your first guide of DT! When I saw your tweet about this video the other day I immediately went to turn on notifications. Very excited to see how the suggested opener/rotation lines up with what I intuitively landed on.

Looking forward to PCT and MNK sometime down the line. MNK especially because the core rotation changing slightly has had devastating effects on my muscle memory of like almost ten years.
