FFXIV: Dawntrail Thaumaturge/Black Mage 1 to 100 Leveling Skills Guide

New? Got too many skills? Made the mistake of using a level skip and have no idea what anything does? Just hate reading? Try this guide out!

This guide seeks to teach new Black Mages how to Black Mages properly, without getting too deep into optimization. I’ll be showing off and explaining some openers but not delving too much deeper beyond that and general skill usage. Endgame is a long way away and there’s lots to learn along the way. Start slow and work your way up one skill at a time! Then, graduate to more advanced guides.

  1. I erroneously included Blizzard in the Rotations after getting Blizzard IV. This is because of the Paradox in the 90+ Rotations. Skip this Blizzard unless you need an Umbral Ice refresh. I will fix this for the images in the description. My apologies for this mistake.

  2. Excellent video as always, Wesk!

Really not a fan of Flare Star. It puts the rotation on rails. And It looks, sounds, and IS pretty limp. Then again, they did similar nonsense with almost every class this expansion. I'm calling it Dawnrails, because they put everything on rails. Thou shalt play how YoshiP wants you to play, or else. Big meh.

  3. How should I gem BLM? Go with a rapid fire turret (heavy on SpS) or a slow, big boom turret (heavy on Crit/Det)?

Edit: I do lean on the big boom side. Much of my melds are SA XII, SM XII with like the occasional QT XII. But, I want to know the BLM cognoscenti on melding.

  4. I'm still a little bummed at how I loved lvl 99 BLM but then stopped having as much fun at lvl 100. Being given an inflexible Flare Star spell with a long cast time but the progression beforehand did not provide very much in terms of new movement tools (just an extra Ployglot stack)… I'm not sure this was a good idea.

Lvl 70 Foul – casted but you're given complete freedom when you use it as long as you don't overcap
Lvl 80 Xeno – great instant cast movement tool with big damage
Lvl 90 Paradox – great instant cast movement tool with moderate damage and helps in buff management
Lvl 100 Flare Star – inflexible and changes rotation, must be casted

  5. Why don't instead of re making these entire videos, don't just make a new one with the changes and add ups and say on the start that ppl need to watch the old one first?

  6. These videos are singlehandedly the reason i have explored all the jobs in the game. They not only help understand the job from beginner level to well enough to feel confident in party content but also help show the syngery of the skills. Reading the tool tips is good and all but weskAlber's explanations make it so i dont forget how it all works. Also helps me plan out my hotbars. Even if i will never main some of the jobs you do videos on I will always watch your videos start to finish just for the comprehensive understanding of others jobs. Thank you for these videos, truly.

  7. Kind of a nitpick, but just wanted to see the enemies' status effect when you do the openers, just so I could see at what point you reapply it. Obviously not needed, but just that lol. Been seeing some videos where people reapply thunder as early as 6 seconds left.

  8. Something you've glossed over (no pun intended) is that the Firestarter proc you get in the Standard opener isn't used after Despair. Normally that proc is used for Transpose optimization; I know you didnt touch on that because its a beginner guide, but I think you should've included the extra Fire 3 in the opener for completion

  9. Back when I was a sprout, I did the stupid thing and job-skipped Black Mage because I thought “500,000 gil??? An almost-max-level job?? Let’s goo”. It’s been my little corner of shame nowadays so this video came in clutch so I can actually learn BLM

  10. I like the changes black mage got. Having Fire Paradox be instant, always grant Firestarter, and the big bump in “power” given by Manafont are so nice. I will admit that losing Astral Soul upon switching to ice is quite punishing, on the same level as messing up a Ninjutsu and having that 860 potency Raiton turn into nothing.

  11. For the 100 Opener, that second fire iv after double weaving triple cast and leylines seems almost impossible without having the astral fire timer run out what gives? 2.38 ss btw. Honestly this job is so scuffed this expansion like what the hell where they thinking?

  12. Just came back after 2 years. Haven't bought dawntrail cause im still trying to slog through ng+ arr cause EW really didn't click with me due to starting in Stormblood. Burnout from EW followed by ARR made me quit and while I was able to pick up 90 BLM quick enough trying to grasp the changes made to sub 50 about gave me a stroke trying to relearn my class in a bardams roulette followed by a eden ramuh. Dunno what made me think starting out with BLM as my returning job was a good idea but here I am, trying to learn what in the hell they did to this job since I left 2 years ago lol
