  1. Multiplayer storytelling is difficult, massive or not. Your chosen one character is never the first, 100s others are well ahead of you, the quest you are on has already been completed many times by others, unless the story involves some form of time loop shenanigans. You can also phase out players who are ahead or behind your quest progress, but that makes massive multiplayer all but impossible. So yeah, story in multiplayer (or rather, multi party) persistent worlds is difficult. 4th wall metagaming.

  2. Part of the game i really like aside from how story is told, is being able to select a boss and a difficulty and go right to the fight as many times as you want. It really helps you practice that boss and farm it. I really wish Wow would do something like this, i dont want to fight trash mobs for most of the time. I will also play triple triad with npcs untill i win all their cards, no matter how long it takes!

  3. Even the different Jobtrainers come back in the story and it matters if they know your character or not.
Oh and yes, Heavensward is way better than ARR.
ARR is the "worst" part of ffxiv – and I don't say it's bad, it's just that.. every expansion is better!

  4. Oh you poor soul, ARR is considered the worst story in FF14 by most players, and while it is a great story, it's nothing like the Rollercoaster you have now embarked on, good luck, buddy, you're gonna need it.

  5. ARR was good, but nowhere near as good as Heavensward. Stormblood has some of the pacing issues as ARR, but great characters and the story is generally just as good as ARR. Shadowbringer and Endwalker will leave you in awe. 😁🤘

  6. I know a billion other people have said this, but boy, you are NOT ready. And i mean that in a good way

ARR Is where they "Set up" the story, it's the longest and hardest bit of story, because it's over 50 levels of content and lays the groundwork for what is to come

Each expansion and their post-patch takes some of those threads, and ties them into a concise larger thread that will continue being a relevant part of the story even after the expansion

On top of this, EVERY SINGLE JOB has a story quest chain that not only gives skills and helps learn the class, but also has pieces of lore that tie into overarching story later, a spoiler free example is a character in endwalker referring to me as "A white mage of note" while not even playing white mage, but because i've leveled it and done the story for it, it's a thing.

And at the end of it all, Endwalker just……Blows the mind.

Of note is "Your character not knowing things" Becomes "Your character remembering important interactions from the past" it FEELS like your character has developed in the story, you run into a group with a problem, and experiences you've had before let you give them an insight into that problem and help solve it, and that becomes more and more relevant the further you progress through the story

As others have said, and i agree, FFXIV is less MMORPG and more RPGMMO, the story and characters are what MAKE those moments of gameplay so much more important, everything has a reason to exist, every system in the game has an in-world explanation that makes sense, you just might not have found it yet. And some of those reasons, are GIGANTIC plot-points about who you, the warrior of light, truly are. And what you mean to the world at large

At the end of the day, you can't compare it to WoW in a lot of ways, WoW is a game first with story as an afterthought to match what gameplay they wanted. in FFXIV Every part of the gameplay is relevant. And those that have skipped the story to just do the endgame have missed out on not only so much story and lore, but also the introduction to mechanics and characters that explain how the gameplay actually works.

  7. I can't wait to see him have his mind blown later on in later expansions. I do wish FFXIV would integrate more interesting gameplay more often in the main story even in the later expansions.. can still feel slow at times, but I'd rather have that than wasting time on quests that in the end feel like time filler in between story text and cinematics anyway. Leave that to optional side quests.

  8. As someone who's playing FFXIV for the first time as well I'm equally surprised, although I was a bit burned out finishing the ARR grind. Which is normal, since there's no skips like in wow for example where you just outlvl the content, it was meant to be played over a long time, several patches.
But after a while I started heavensward, which I'm very close to finishing now and damn, this story and world building is even better, with a hell of a lot of plot twists.
And eventhough the story after the msq is less than half the amount of quests than with ARR, it feels just as lengthy. I'll probably be lvl 69 entering the next 60-70 expansion with only doing msq and duty roulette..

  9. hot damn, we got another 1 boys, Accolonn made it past the filter, he is on his way to become a walking advertisement for the critically mmorpg ffxiv blablaidontknowthefullquotebutimhyped. YAY

  10. I just finished Endwalker last night myself… and I have to say… Heavensward and Shadowbringers were a hard act to follow… I wasn't sure Endwalker to top that, but holy crap it most certainly did. As it should in content that is bringing the entire Hydaelin-Zodiark saga to its climax and conclusion. It is next NEXT level.

  11. Nice you put down chocobo racing to finish ARR. I do agree the ending of ARR was pretty cool. Though I don’t know who was cutting unions near me but the feels hit you. Also, every expansion so far tops the previous one.

  12. If you think MMO's cant tell stories, you've been playing the wrong MMO's or you've been playing them wrong.

FFXIV and SWTOR are the best at it but there's plenty of MMO's that tell great stories. Just not WoW
