FFXIV Alexander Heavensward Story Reaction and Hildibrand is FUN? – WoW Refugee Part 6

WoW Refugee to FFXIV Heavensward Part 6:
After 15 years of World of Warcraft, I finally took the plunge to try FFXIV around 2 months ago and it was the best decision I’ve made. This game is absolutely incredible and I’m so glad I’ve become a WoW refugee and found a new home in FF14.

If you enjoy this content I do stream 3-4 times a week on Twitch:

I’ve already completed an 18 part series through FF14 ARR and this is part 6 of the FFXIV Heavensward series. The majority of this video is going through the Alexander raid series for the first time on MiL. I absolutely love heavensward so far it’s such a huge step up on ARR, from the story to all side content and the ffxiv alexander story was incredible!

Really hope you’re still enjoying these FFXIV reaction and progress videos – I’m happy to keep this going all the way through to Stormblood is people still enjoy it!

  1. If you like the Alexander fight then you should try it on the Ultimate difficulty (Not Savage). It is an awesome fight and Alexander has an extra phase. It will take bloody ages to finish it unless you have a group that knows what they are doing but if you complete it, i garuntee you will be buzzing for days!

  2. Black Mage seems stop-starty and slow to begin with, but past 50, they add more stuff that rewards consistent juggling with unholy firepower, and closer to 80, you're potentially a non-stop torrent of firepower whose only weakness is being forced to stop casting.

It's a bit of a dry and shaky journey, since BLM feels like it gets a big change up each expansion and you really feel that GCD, but if you want to dip into the caster pool, real power awaits.

  3. First of all, happy belated birthday Marty! Nice to see you're a fellow August baby! ^_^ (My birthday is Aug. 8!)

Black mage is a pretty fun quest since I play it on my Excalibur Alt but I only just unlocked it myself there so I am only scratching the surface (level 34 currently) but I did get the polar bear myself though I did squee at them waving in the cutscene! I even do the events in the past 3 to 4 years and the events are similar but there's a different story and prizes every year so it makes the seasonal events dynamic!

And Alexander is a fun raid so far but wait until Stormblood and Shadowbringers! The fun and difficulty gets better! (Cruise Chaser is also a mount you can buy in the FF14 store so you can ride with a friend and has an awesome transformation sequence for flying!)

Oh and expect more QTEs down the road!

And I'm happy you're liking the Hildebrand quest! The trial is an homage to FF5 since Gilgamesh is from that game. There's around 5 episodes if I remember correctly so you're about half way there. (Expect another early FF reference!)

Glad to see you're having fun and hope we bump into each other down the road since I'm on Lich for my main! (Once I get a new Game Time card since I'm temporarily locked out for now.)

  4. There are about 20 quests for Hildebrand in ARR, 6-ish for Heavansward (They feel longer), and about 10 for Stormblood. There are no Hildabrand quests for Shadowbringers (sad for some, a miracle for others)

  5. For every 8-man raid from HW onwards, there is a savage version which are overall considerably more difficult than most extreme trials. The only thing that's harder than these are Ultimates, but those are in another league entirely. If you plan doing savage, I wouldn't worry about doing it at min ilvl, they're plentifully challenging as they are if you're going in synced.
In particular the first 4 fights from HW, Alex Gordias are particularly notorious for having been ridiculously difficult at launch. If you really want to suffer, do these synced and on min ilvl.

Also I agree with the final fight of Alexander being absolutely amazing. It also has an incredibly well done detail. In the section of that fight where he freezes you in time, look at your buffs, your job gauge, essentially, all your timers. All of those are frozen. Everything. Any buff on you stops ticking. Your Soul of the Dragon, stops ticking. Your cooldowns stop counting down. In my opinion, that is one of the, if not THE coolest mechanic in the entire game.

  6. I'm kinda surprised you didn't like the HW fishing quests as much. It wasn't a lot, but the flavor of our fishing companion being a hitwoman instead of just a dunderhead made it feel different.

  7. Living Liquid feels like a homage to Liquid Flame from FF V. Very similar boss mechanics and forms between a humanoid form and a hand form. I haven't been able to play far enough into the game (barely nearing the end of ARR) so I do not know if Living Liquid has a third form on top of them (in FF V Liquid Flame had also a tornado form), which would seal the deal. Real neat observation!

Keep up the good work, can't wait for more!

  8. If you wanna see more cool things that you basically have to find out about via word of mouth from other players, then you should go check out the Mail Moogle quests. It starts in Mor Dhona, over by the area where you picked up most of the Crystal Tower questline. Sons of Saint Conch or something of the like? Talk to the Roe lady.
