FFXIV: A Realm Reborn – A Newcomer's Perspective

I played Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, an MMORPG developed and published by Square Enix, and thought it was pretty good. Here is why I thought it was pretty good. Maybe you think it is pretty good too. Maybe you do not. Subjectivity is awesome, isn’t it? I love subjectivity, in fact, they call me Dr. Subjectivity. FFXIV is a neat game. Do play it. I recommend it. Or don’t, I’m not your mama.

  1. Hi there and welcome to the FFXIV community!

I have to say, I agree with your assessment of 2.0's story and I personally see it more as a worldbuilding exposition that sets you up for the "real story". Also, while the team has done a lot to make the basegame less tedious and grindy, the stretch before Titan remains one of the weakest part of the whole game. But it all has its place and you'll be glad to have paid attention later on, since these fundamentals will help you a lot with understanding the complicated concepts to come.

To understand more of the 1.0 backstory, I'd recommend going through the optional 8-man raid at level 50 called "Coils of Bahamut". The raid's story includes tons of lore and goes more into the big intro cinematic you see when you first start the game and it gives context for things to come.

Over all, you will find that each raid, be it 8- or 24-man has its own storyline and all of them are amazing in my personal opinion. The same goes for most of the blue quests you encounter, which will unlock all kinds of side content, like optional dungeons, ingame functions or fun questlines with optional trials hidden behind them. Even the tribal quests, aka reputation dailies all have their own storylines attached to them and some of them are real gems.

Oh, also, on the graphics, you might be glad to hear that a major update is planned for 7.0, aka the next expansion, which will include improved ground (and grass) textures out in the open world and better shading and shadow effects.

Edit: One thing on the blue quests: Better stay away from the "A Relic Reborn" quest in North Shroud for now. Relic weapons are part of every expansion's endgame and tend to be a very grindy process. The ARR ones are the worst of the lot and something you should put of until you got nothing to do and feel up for spending hours if not days on repeating the same FATEs and dungeons for specific items.

  2. Someone one time pretended to be Minfilia and was standing outside just after her being missing and the player got baited and thought it was Minfilia and realized "wait how can she be here if shes gone?!" It was a player that made a Minfilia clone to try and trick them.

  3. Welcome to Eorzea 🙂

Your in for a WILD ride my friend.

Take your time on the MSQ, ask your FC or close friends about an available content where ur at during your journey in Heavensward and beyond.

There is 10 years worth of content most new players don't notice until told about 😅

I recommend to join the Noice Network as well as The Hall of the Novice can be found in Western La Noscea at (x28,y24) where you learn the basic concepts of Tank, Healer and DPS.

  4. There are some really witty side quests. The delivery moogle quest line pushed a few boundaries hee hee. I have been playing almost 2 years through all expansions, but there is so much stuff I have not completed in ARR. The whole ARR expansion feels like some anime shows that takes 3 or 6 episodes to finish introducing you to the world and the people and then they hook you and bam you are addicted for life , dreaming about characters (good dreams not degen), and boring people who know nothing about what you are talking about but you tell them anyway. Kingdom hearts game had 2 hour + of just intro before you even get into the story.
Good overview of the prologue of an amazing long game story.

  5. hello sprout! lovely video! it's good to see someone come in fresh-eyed and look at both the good and bad of ARR. i feel like most of the time you've got years-long players going on and on about how 'it's a chore, it's a drag, but trust me, it's worth it when it gets good', and god what a terrible sales pitch, i don't know how we get you sprouts at all when we tell you that you have to work for dozens of hours to get anything good out of it. so i'm glad we did somehow get you – someone with the wisdom and sense to look at it with a fair and critical eye, and the skill and eloquence to share your findings so well! but as glad i am to see ARR get its due – it's true that it does in fact get even better, so i hope you look forward to that and enjoy your continuing journey in eorzea! (and maybe talk more about it later on? hm? hm?)

  6. As far as graphics settings go to improve your FPS, I don't recall which ones specifically are like this but there's a few that while they do technically work, the benefits they offer are minor in comparison to the actual resources they use so it isn't the best idea to max out every setting

  7. "…especially when you are an important member like a tank" AMEN BROTHER
Great video, i had kinda sorta similar experience. The base story didn't really grab me, and i wasn't really interested in the characters (oh how things have changed), but all the random bits and bobs and the attention to detail just wowed me so much that i couldn't stop playing. Thankfully, because it would have been a big mistake for me to drop this like i did with all other mmos.

  8. Hello! I just want to let you know that dont forget to do a series of quest called hildibrand adventures, people often call it as MSQ 2.0, and trust me, you will see the true nature of FF14 😉

  9. On the voice acting portion specifically, from convention panels and various other sources it came to light that this was in large part due to the rushed and crunched development to remake the game. The went to a VA union and gave them a script and just told them to read it. There was apparently no English voice director for the cast so they were quite literally just reading their lines from a script, and usually just their lines with little to no conversational or emotional context. They handle this much better with future expansions, but it's why you have what is by all accounts some very accomplished voice actors giving very subpar work

  11. ARR story can be pretty much divided to fighting each primals, Ifrit, Titan, Garuda, then you get to fight the Ultima Weapon and then you're done, ARR finished. Story is okay, not great but not bad as well. But I think it should be this way as a base game that features the game's world-building. Those people that are hating ARR need to realize that even if the ARR is slog, it was successful enough when it came out, and warranted the following amazing expansions down the line. With so many alt characters that I have, I get to love the story of ARR in that it made sense to me. Good luck on your expansions 😊🎉

  12. Oh man! I like the break down of the base game and a good analysis of what you see, like, and don't like. I would be interested to see more videos like this as you progress through each of the expansions! Enjoy the story and have fun!!
