  1. Seems like it would be a huge amount of work for them to implement. I cant them doing that at this stage in the game. Besides, I already have too many actions for my PS4 controller, even with all the cross-hotbars.

  2. I would almost prefer an advanced job instead. Something like A black mage becomes and Archmage. A paladin becomes a temple knight.
Or a combination. Like a lvl 80 black mage and a lvl 50 or something hard becomes a bow mage. Similar to the old class system.

  3. I liked your idea of it being a “limited job” style where you can use it for all old content for fun but not for the main new content. It would easier than expecting them to work the balance of sub jobs and content.

  4. My other fear is it would no longer be a game about knowing fights, rotation, and job to being where people could become toxic with what meta needs to be set. Like, if your not a summoner running bard as a sub job for dots then your doing it wrong.

  5. I will always grind for more customization and freedom. Definitely makes sense to limit it's usability but that shouldn't get in the way of experimenting and enjoying it.

  6. Work To Game, you two are probably tired of seeing this in the comments, but if sub jobs could bring back anything resembling 3.x Dark Knight, even if just in old/unsync'd content, then count me in for this.

  7. You've asked for "hops" flavors to be used in an ice cream shop. Most people who love ice cream don't like any beer so hops flavor is terrible for them and they wouldn't want the ice cream shop investing effort into that even if some customers might like it better. Why would you convince a great ice cream shop to invest time an effort into how to use hops for their new flavors? Do you think that would overall help or harm their prior quality of delivery?

2.0 basically had sub-jobs via cross role actions and it's basic value was "in order to really have your job what it needs to be, get these cross role skills." It didn't suck as the game was still great and all jobs are fairly fun and painless at those early levels. But it clearly didn't add anything that carried through the entire experience and it usually felt like a forced departure unless you happened to also want to play that other job too. If you claim that it should only be usable on content that matters, then you must realize that all spaces in this game has content that matters. The open world may seem irrelevant to you, but many players are still leveling there and completing quests on it. Fates are a good source of exp. There are some high level monsters that are bosses in the open world that are very deadly if you know where to look. Even early game dungeons level and ilvl sync is meant to make it so you can't completely go to sleep if you get pulled into an early dungeon with a max level and max gear character. You won't trivialize early game dungeons for people who are actually at that level. At the end of the day, you want the game's creators to design and let you do stuff that doesn't impact other people's experiences in the game.

You know what that is? Not playing, or playing another game. You can play games other than FFXIV when you're not having the fun you desire. It's seriously not hard. FFXIV won't be offended if you take a break for a few days, or weeks. It's really easy to catch up on the latest content for at least 1 or 2 jobs even if you go on extended breaks. I came back from a 9 month break just now and I'm having a crapton of fun.

  8. i doubt sub job will be a thing, i think they will take out the class system, meaning we will directly start as jobs. don't forget that sub jobs was a thing of the v1and it didn't work that well…

  9. I would say that instead of subclasses, you do subroles. Basically, every class can gain a variant that plays the same, but leans more into one of the two remaining roles you’ve yet to use. At the very least it would save on dev time with all the varied effects and would still make subroles feel like evolutions.

Example being Paladin can dub into either the healer role “Templar” or the DPS role “Crusader.” In the former, when you use Sheltron, it has a healing ring effect inside that pulses outward, buffing/healing nearby allied a little bit. For the latter, the shields would fire holy beams after forming, sort of like a divine phalanx skill. It would also get one or two new skills indicative of the role as well as some number boosting traits.

For your other example, black mage would have the healer role of “Necromancer,” which – while enochian isn’t active – would out artheric bleed on enemies when hit with Fire IV, causing nearby allies to the enemy to get a small regen, as well as a burst heal if the cursed enemy dies. You can also then give them a resurrection skill that requires you to cast a new role skill, but costs all of your mp. For the “Sorcerer” Tank, you’d have shield buffs allies near the target when casting Blizzard IV with enochian (scaling higher in efficiency the more mp you have) and an off global that costs all mp, but grants a much better shield as well as a defense buff. Add a passive after that that causes lay lines to improve defense and negate interruption.

The concept goes from there, samurai get parry and counter skills or can pass sake buffs. WHM can do mild radial damage with healing spells the more actual damage they fix, or get damage/status prevention on their heal skills. Toss in some sub-unique skills to flavor a bit and you can make this work well without causing an accidental exponential creep, but still make each class feel naturally evolving.

I admit though the 5.3 boss is kind of the best excuse for just blending jobs, but that sounds like an absolute pain to implement. The system I presented would be more about giving players post 80 something to do with old jobs, while still limiting burnout, extra dev time and preventing an incidentally game breaking system – because let’s face it, some job combos just DESTROY others (Iajutsu – Nova Star Cutter)

  10. After what happened with summoners and scholars and balancing. I doubt that would happen. They would have to rework the game to support this. Another thing is someone will find a be all best build and kick anyone without it. Like how healers had to lv a BLM to get swiftcast. I think if they added a way for for jobs to play other roles and change the skills to support that role. Like make BLM like a bard but it lose dmg for support. That way if a team has 2 BLM 1 of them could switch to a more supportive mage. Same could work with bard. More dmg but loses support. Healers could dps and be in the dmg role. SAMs could tank. Things like that. But a massive rework would need to be done on a expac.

  11. Rather then see sub jobs, I'd rather see an actual splitting into job variations. For example, split Bard into Bard with healing and support and Sniper with more DPS focus. Or split Paladin into Paladin with Tanking and support, and Crusader with less tanking skills and no support but a DPS focus. They could even repurpose the same basic skill animations and effects so there would be less developer work on that end. Of course, YoshiP has already clearly stated several times that the split job system as seen in Scholar and Summoner is a nightmare to manage so it will never happen.
As for Chris' "who cares" comment at 03:47 though? Yeah, sorry, but you know people would care if you weren't using the optimal setting even if just running trash content. You've even already made several videos over the casual/hardcore divide in FF14. We already have people arguing over not pulling wall to wall, healers not maximizing their DPS and DPS not using their full toolkits in levelling roulettes. Given what we already know about the clash in playstyle approach in the FF14 fanbase, it's being willfully blind to say that no one would care if you weren't running the "best" sub job all the time where ever it was possible to do so.

  12. Problem with SJ system in FFXIV, if you take XI's system as base, is that normal content doesn't work the enemy's strengths and weakness as all other titles do. Also, all jobs are limited to 1 type of weapon.

Let's say, for example, that normal content had a flying mob weak to piercing DMG. On XI, SAM had the option of using /RNG SJ and use bow Weaponskills; it could also use Spear as main weapon. This isn't an option in XIV and because of that SJ wouldn't have a personalization effect. What would happen is that every single job would would use /BRD SJ.

A more common application of XI's SJ system has been successfully adapted and is currently in use in parallel content, such as Eureka and Bozjan Front with the Logos / Lost Action systems, where a job isn't truly restricted to it's original role: a PLD for example can use Essence of the Saviour + Cure IV + Banner of Solemn Clarity and become a monstrous healer.

More then all that, can you imagine how stupidly overpowered a BLM/RDM would be?!

  13. "Bring it into the next deep dungeon"

As a solo deep dungeon runner, pls no. Part of the fun and challenge is having to deal with all of the enemies and floorsets meant for 4 people. I worry a subjob system would kinda destroy how it's played solo.

I get it, I'm in a vast minority of players but, if there is a separate achievement (assuming subjobs go into the game) between a "vanilla" job and one with a subjob, along with a separate leaderboard, I would feel better about it.

In general, I don't think FF14 needs a subjob system, as others have pointed out, this leads to the illusion of choice rather than a meaningful one, as a meta will develop and it could possibly breed more open toxicity.

  14. Sub jobs won't work out well just force people to only play certain jobs the meta heads will run rampant I liked it how it is now where everything can work even when those meta heads said dark knight was crap and then the first ultimate clear shut them all up it was great

  15. I think octopath traveler has the best job/subjob system in an rpg, but that game was designed with that mechanic. It wasn't added years after launch. Also being a single player game, it doesn't matter if certain combinations of jobs work better than others. In an mmo that would be a problem.

  16. I loved FF XI's subjob system but it seems XIV's staff is adamant on not letting players customize their characters is any way that is not purely aesthetic. No stat points to allot, no gear with interesting stats/effects you can pick from, no skill customization (so obviously no subjobs or cross-class skills), strict rotations… the only way to diversify currently is with materia melds, and even that is negligible. Honestly I love every other aspect of the game, but combat is becoming such a streamlined experience that this game may as well drop the RPG part from MMORPG.

  17. I remember subjobs in FF XI, worked well. So Square would know what to do. I really really liked how WoW made the 3 separate trees, with some classes can tank, dps, and heal depending… Though that's not needed as much with switching to each class based on weapon. One thing I really, really want… Like everytime I take some months off and return, I hope for more Egi glamour's. Just returned a week ago and still as sad as the day I left 😭😅

Allllssoooo give us more than 3 damn alliance raids 😭😭😭😭😭

  18. Maybe make HD version world of Vana'diel that you can only use subjobs in? Obviously subjobs would break the normal version of 14, but if you make an entire area of the game built for it maybe it could be balanced around it.
