FF14 First Impressions after 15 years of WoW – Hildibrand, DRAGONS and Ravana – Heavensward Part 2

FF14 First Impressions of Heavensward after 15 years of WoW.
I’ve played WoW for over 15 years but given the state of WoW right now, the lack of content in the game and care from the devs, some of my friends have convinced me to try FF14. So I wanted to document my FFXIV first impressions as a WoW refugee after 15 years and document my journey through FF14 and give my feedback along the way.

I’ve already done an 18 part series through ARR and now I wanted to cover my first impressions and document my journey through FF14 Heavensward as a long time WoW player and refugee. Throughout I will be comparing FF14 to WoW and referencing the differences between the two. I have played some final fantasy games before but had never tried FFXIV.

The story in Heavensword seems incredible, and it’s hard to even compare FF14 to WoW at this point. I normally get easily distracted, but I can see myself getting hooked to the story. If you have any tips for a new FF14 new player coming into Heavensward or things I should do or pick up, I’d love the help! Obviously as we progress through heavensward there will be spoilers in these videos.

This video is mostly Progressing the Heavensward MSQ, Doing a new dungeon, trial and some heavensward side content.

I stream all of this live on twitch and would love to see you there:

  1. Yup. Aether currents are day one. As soon as you complete the MSQ in each zone, you get the "last" Aethercurrent. Collect them all and you can fly in that zone. Forever. AND it's the same in every expansion.

  2. Hildebrand definitely isn't for everyone, but tbh even if you aren't especially feeling it, it's still worth pushing through anyway, because a surprising number if trials, collectibles, and deep lore are locked behind it.

  3. Hildebrand is…yeah pretty silly.
The best thing about it is there are several trials associated with it across the expansions most of which are great.
Other than that, at least with the early Hildebrand quests you could see them as an experiment of sorts for the cutscene team. A place where you see them experiment in fun ways with how far they can push the tools they have, which you see the results of as the game progresses.

  4. also hildy served the dual purpose of both giving the game a series of comedy side quests, but also the cartoony nature of it let the cutscene animation team push the limits of the engine – something you'll start to see bear fruit as you get deeper into the msq

  5. Keep breeding the chocobo at 40 with your best/highest pedigree chocobos so that you can try to get lucky with a max stat kid. Once you get a baby chocobo with all of its stats maxed you can just keep it forever. And there are chocobo challenge races you can do after rank 40 for a lot of mgp

  6. By default, by the time you finish as zone in MSQ you will have all Quest Aether currents unlocked and just the need to collect the ones in the wild and there in from Day 1 of an expansion. For Hunt marks its replaces the hunt log and you can buy Gear, Mounts, Pets, Emotes ETC from the seals.

  7. Hildebrand is like an especially pungent ingredient in the dish that is FFXIV. Some people Love it and can't get enough, while some aren't that into it, and others find him to be an acquired taste. Here's the thing, he's a foundational component in the dish. There are things you will miss if you don't mix him in throughout your journey. You don't have to love him, but if you love FFXIV, at some point you will appreciate his existence.

  8. About the Centurio Seals: Most of the things you can get is gear, but also a few other things, some more useful, some.. not so much. (All hunt thingies, including your grand company hunt thing, offer "Riding Maps". They increase your mount speed, but are totally useless once you have flying. And it's much more likely that you unlock flying long before you have the seals for those maps. xD ) I mostly use them for glamour purposes. The seal equivalent you get in Shadowbringers also give you access to mounts and to an item that helps you upgrading the gear that is currently the best in game (I think).
