  1. Too bad Dawntrail's story didn't live up to the adventure and vacation hype that we were sold. A real letdown compared to the earlier expansions' stories. The dungeons trials and raids though are A+ tier so at least that was worth playing for.

  2. You should see what happened in "The flames of truth" trailer. It shows what happened to the old man that gets you out in the beginning. A realm reborn has been optimized so new players are not stuck in the slow base part of the story for long. Even though it is boring it sets up the rest of the story so they could only cut so much. Hope to see you in the game I would love to see you stream it!

  3. As soon as he said he didn't want to pay a sub I knew there had to already be the Unlimited Free Trial copy pasta in the comments, and if it isn't already shame on yall. Also the armor in the second trailer is extra spikey so if the get eaten by dragons they can still do some damage on the way down.

  4. To add a bit of context to the trailers :

The first one is from FFXIV 1.0. The 'cards' were part of the quest system called "Leves" where you'd pick them at NPCs then activate them to undergo the quest. The "main" character is the stand in for your own character. Without going too deep into it, 1.0 had a very different gameplay than 2.0 onward with 'classes' allowing to learn skills from one another then slot them while playing another. So you could level up a conjurer and learn healing skills then switch to gladiator and while the gladiator had its own abilities, you could slot in some of the skills you learned as a conjurer, ending with a gladiator able to cast healing magic for example. This cross-class skill system carried on to 2.0 and 3.0 before it was replaced with role actions. The main character (referred to as the "Warrior of Light") in this trailer showing the "archer" class.

The second trailer is interesting as since FFXIV 1.0 did so badly, the new director of the dev team decided they needed to trash this version and rebuild another one entirely. So for months, their team worked on both the FFXIV 1.0 version and 2.0 at the same time in preparation for the switch. While the latter wasn't known to the public, ingame, signs were showing of something big coming, a red "star" growing larger in the sky. On the final days before the servers were shut down, the song you hear in the trailer could be heard ingame in the distance with the red star turning out to be Dalamud, one of the two moons the world has, coming down. In those days, GMs would spawn high level enemies near cities and the surroundings, simulating a moment of crisis. But players actually were doing a pretty good job pushing them back. Some legendary memes came out of it too (like the "Great Gobbue Wall") and it lasted until the very last moment… when the screen went to black and that trailer played INGAME. It would show the end of an era, the destruction that ensued and "adventurers" (players) getting wisked away by the old man. When the trailer ended, everyone was kicked out and the servers brought down. In this trailer, the main character is using the Warrior "job" (which is an advanced version of a base class, the Marauder).

Something to note at this point is that the player characters can switch class/job freely when outside of combat and instanced content. This means a single PC can level up all jobs to maximum level along with all crafting and gathering classes. This means that alts are mostly if you want a visually different character to play as since you can pretty much experience and do all content with all playstyles on a single character. This is canon ingame as the player having "Soul Crystals" that let them attune to a given job as well as a "gear set" system that let them swap instantly (which is what you saw happen in Shadowbringers).

The third trailer for Heavensward shows the WoL as a Warrior arriving in a city at war with dragons and the individuals wielding spears and exotic armor are called "Dragoons". They're essentially dragon slayers who specialize in aerial combat through the use of jumping abilities. This job is one of the trademark jobs from the series and while their origins and abilities usually differ per game, the jumping aspect always remains. They go from being dragon slayers to actually dragon knights who get along with dragons and often sport abilities that are similar to dragons depending on their respective lore. This expansion also introduced the Au Ra as a new playable race (think cross between human and lizard / dragon looking people)

The fourth trailer, Stormblood, happens during a war with a nation called Garlemard which are noted in lore to be unable to use magic. As such, they instead use high technology and war machina (called Magitek) to compensate and use magic like abilities… at that point, they are also very nationalistic in that they view any other races besides "garleans" as inferiors or "savages". The setting is then to fight two wars on two fronts to retake land and liberate people. In this trailer, both characters (the WoL and the woman) on the statue's hand are Monks (aka martial artists) and their signature trait is that they actually have the shortest GCD in the game in term of queuing abilities along with a gap closer called "Thunderclap" which is pretty much what you see the both of them pull off. Later on, you of course see the Samurai in action which was one of the new jobs introduced with Stormblood (the other being the Red Mage) and one of the new settings for the xpac.

The fifth trailer (Shadowbringers) shows the WoL struggling against that angelic creature and as you can see, switching between the jobs from the previous trailers along with, at the end, changing to the Dark Knight job. While not a job introduced in Shadowbringers, it is thematically relevant to the story (somewhat) and why it is showcased. In order however, you can see both a Black Mage (the white haired catgirl, or miqo'te), an Astrologian (the tall elven-looking character with the cards), the Gunbreaker (the human-looking character with the gunblade fighting that giant white lion, a new jobs for the expac) and the Dancer. The Dancer actually showcases both the new job for this expac and the new race, the Viera as well as the Hrothgars. At first, the Viera only had females and Hrothgars males but this would change later on.

The sixth trailer (Endwalker) shows the WoL as a Paladin; while not a new job (it was back in 1.0 in fact), again it is somewhat thematically relevant and a throwback to an older game. You'd then see a Red Mage in action (the red girl with the crystal rapier) and the Sage (the one in blue with the Nuliths, aka floating wands), the latter which was a new job for Endwalker. Further on, you'd see the man on the throne with a scythe, showcasing the Reaper job, the other new job for the expansion. This is also the expansion where male Viera were added.

The final trailer (Dawntrail) now has the WoL as a Viper, a dual-wielding job that uses "Twinfangs" blades as their weapon which can be combined in a double sword, a new job for DT. You'd also have a peek at the Pictomancer through the Lalafell (childlike character) using a paintbrush and palette, also a new jobs. By the end, you also see the reveal of the female Hrothgars.

And if there are three important pillars about FFXIV, they are "Music", "Storytelling" and "Community". Yes, those armors look as good ingame as they do in the trailers and a lot of people's ingame fun is to come up with the most original or coolest "glams" they can. A lot of gear can be dyed and somehow made to work together.

And if you ever want to give it a shot, the trial goes from Lv.1 to Lv.70, with all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and Stormblood playable. Only restrictions are that you cannot use classes and jobs from those expacs (though you have 10 to start with) and the usual stuff like limited gil (currency) and some features disabled. Though since there's plenty of people who played all the way to Stormblood with trial accounts, it's safe to say they aren't too heavy restrictions.

  5. This missiles striking the dragon in Heavensward weren't missiles. They were people. You were watching dragoons slam into the dragon with a spear and wrenching it inside its scales to bring it down. Their specialty is invoking an artform of combat that allows them to project themselves to slam into enemies, usually in the form of jumping on them for massive kinetic strikes.

Also, yes, armor and clothing looks that clean. I would argue that the fits in the trailers are mid.

  6. The best thing I did was watch the trailer for ARR ten years ago with my brother. This game is wondrous, I hope you give it a try ❤ Mainly as I’d love to watch your playthrough 🤌

  7. The fun part, there are a couple dozen classes, and you can learn and play all of them all at once. Hence why the main character can switch classes so easily. You just go to learn the classes. You can play for free a large portion of early content, but subscription gives you access to everything. And its so worth it. Price of a couple starbucks coffees and you get the best mmo out there.

  8. I tried to play this game several times along the years but I was able to do it during Endwalker's time because I finally found the only job I like, Black Mage

Sadly, in my opinion, Dawntrail is terrible, and Black Mage was ruined with the changes

EVEN SO, I highly recommend the journey from ARR to Endwalker, it was slow and boring sometimes but also shocking and tragic, with lots of fun and epic moments splashered at all times, it was the best experience ever, and I'm absolutely going to repeat it from the start in some months from now

  9. since it's been three weeks and you have three hundred comments, I'm sure somebody mentioned that your character can level up every single class in the game.
Also, hope to see you playing! I'll have to look through your vids to see if you came into the fun. edit to add: of course it seems overwhelming and a lot going on. you just watched 14 years of trailers. But don't let that make you think you are starting too late. The story is strong and very worth the ride
