Does FFXIV have a Meta and is it Relevant?

Is the Meta important in FFXIV?
Or just an empty concept in a game like this?

  1. Our static is SGE/SCH with 3 ranged and 1 melee, a paladin and a warrior, currently, and we clear content just fine. With minutes to spare, easy. A different static I know clears content with 2 dancers, 2 white mages, 2 gunbreakers, a samurai and a black mage, and they're doing just fine for themselves.
Team comp is a meme. Meta only matters to those who care about it like in ultimates, content done by the 1% of the 1%, but almost any party configuration can clear almost all content.

  2. Lynx was actually the guy that got me into hardcore raiding. The guy was an incredible player with a lot of drive and knowledge of how to play the game extremely well. However, not only can he have really horrible takes and a bad mindset on the "meta" he's just in general not a person you should strive to be. Raiding or even being a decent human being. Between him playing the game so much that he would forget to shower for in his words (weeks on end), to him losing his raid group due to his ego and immaturity. I learned a lot of things from him that I will always apply while raiding in my static. But I also learned exactly the kinda person I really don't want to be. It's honestly for the best that he's not making content anymore.

  3. Something that needs to be distinguished is 1. this video is old. the Inner release example is outdated now that its on a 60s cooldown. 2. There is no meta and noone should chase it HOWEVER as far as raid composition you should at least try to get your 5% stat boost party compostion with unique roles. In each party it is best to have unique tanks/healers/melee/ranged phys/caster. Often ive seen parties in party finder for savage content just not caring about getting a ranged phys in their party and wondering why the boss hits harder. A big issue with it is people look at jobs on paper, rather than each individual player. which is why ive personally seen tons of reapers in party finder do worse than a Machinist. Meanwhile ppl think oh mch awful reaper good. That wont always be the case.

  4. My only gripe is how trash a job like reaper is in synced content due to missing huge parts of their rotation. Even in DSR they lose out as a resource based job in a fight with a lot of downtime.

  5. I prefer BLM only. If I don’t like a feel of a job, I’ll not be enthusiastic learning it properly. BLM is a job one played since the Job System was introduced in 1.0 to current day 😉

Stormblood and the META trying to do PF, was a really demotivating experience as people actively excluded me from joining even when it was a farm run that I knew inside and out :/
Sam was also looked down on at that time as it was the other job that was pure dps and no utility but that party had a SAM already and the last spot had listed every job except BLM, but they even allowed a 2nd SAM to join. Like WTF is up with that xD

  6. "at the highest end of the game, there is no meta. there is only switching out classes based on their performance and utilities in certain fights."

a whole lotta words to say "the meta depends on the fight."

  7. The keeping people above 0 hp is correct. If someone is about to die to a mechanic and it's their fault for it. Don't waste the heal on them. That encourages them to do so again. Instead, let them die and ress them. Any caster class, especially healers, have the mana mechanic to deal with.

So for healers, it not about doing their job. It's about understanding the difference between healing and overhealing. The latter being a complete waste of mana. It's the same thing you do on a tank, learning when to use you DcDs.. not just using them. Or on a dps, using your GcDs appropriately to boost your dps. This is the efficiency that is mentioned. Knowing when yo use what. I mean, anyone can spam the buttons and do a pretty fair job of it. But, it's not a very efficient way of doing it.

The overhealing part was an annoyance of mine from WoW. So, knowing how to heal, and just healing, isn't just for FF XIV.

So, when healing. You're primary focus is keeping the tank, or tanks alive. If you don't… well.. then you're probably about to wipe. Those dps that aren't following the mechanic, or died to a mistake, say mistiming when not to be where they are. You have two options here.

Waste mana on overhealing so they survive, and thus encourage them to ignore the mechanic again because of it.

    or

Letting said dps die and then reviving them. Thus, encouraging them to learn/use the mechanic.

Which one leads to more efficient runs?

The main problem with it here is, most people don't care to take the time to explain what's going on.

  8. It depends on whether you think "meta" has to be competitive. Meta usually means something like "knowing what your opponents will likely do" in video games. Knowing how different abilities and builds interact with each other and the game, and taking advantage of that to succeed.
In the broadest sense, Meta just means "outside". Technically anything outside the game that still influences the game is part of the metagame. The forums and Reddit, or even something like discord are "outside" the game, and technically "meta".
So there is a meta. Just not a very competitive meta. I'd say that still counts as a meta. Clearly you can still look up your Jobs and rotations and theorycraft about things outside the game, and use that to influence how you play. We just aren't as competitive about it as other games. (Plus there is in fact a PVP meta of course)

  9. Meta’s exist Because time is precious commodity. Nobody wants to feel as though they are wasting it on a character who will be ineffective or less enjoyable, or less desirable to other people in groups.

  10. Meta only matters for certain small boosts, and trying to maximize team comp with good synergy. Otherwise, the only 'meta' is knowing fights well enough to pre position for optimal uptime on your classes that need it (like blm or any melee). Knowing SAM hits harder than DNC means nothing if you're uncomfortable on SAM, conStantly dropping your buffs, and missing positionals. AT THE SAME TIME, some classes are harder to hit that skill ceiling and really shine, so people are prone to expect that if they see a certain class they do not expect great things. Thus the desire to see parses for high end content. But parsing isnt about the meta either, really – it's about personal skill. "Can this person play to a high enough level for the content?"

My static and I played around with this in ShB for prog and we found that regardless of meeting the meta or even ensuring the buff for perfect party comp, our best kills came from people playing what they were most comfortable on. That means kicking diamond's ass with multiple ranged phys, while other groups in party finder struggled for even one clear with a 'perfect' group. Meta means nothing if your dragoon is floor tanking the whole fight.

  11. I feel like the "just play what you enjoy" only applies to when the game is relativly balanced. At the beginning of Endwalker, if your raid wasn't running MNK/RPR you had a MASSIVE disadvantage. Yes it was fixed, but this was a time where there was a big difference in raidcomps no matter how skilled a DRG or NIN player would have been in the same raid.

  12. This tier I started playing ranged physical – not because I wanted, but because waited for hours on end in PF (I started raiding tier as a healer) for some ranged phys to join. Nobody will take machinist seriously, as it simply puts the entire group at a disadvantage in comparison to other two in the same role, no matter how you put it. Personal dps is low and no utility (tactician does not count, as literally every job has a mitigation button). Sure, it is a fun job to play, and you will probably find some groups anyways, but it is very difficult to justify taking it over dancer or bard in any group.

  13. My healers will still stand perfectly still and wait for me to take damage so they can spam diagnosis instead of just…healing me through Kardia or with tons of off globals

  14. @8:00 we have a player in my guild who hasn't grasped that. He gets so angry that he has to heal people. Then gets more angry when people die on him because he choose not to get them to a good health threshold for the next damaging hit. For example in p2s during the 2nd? or 3rd? coherance where you spread apart, then deal with the coherance hit and after the boss will do an aoe blast. Our Astro friend will just keep dpsing away and thinking his 2 Ogcd hots is going to be fast enough to heal people during 4 bursty hits back to back. Or he'll complain that "oh there's no one to heal," because the other healer is better at weaving healing spells in between doing damage. Just before he could notice damage went out and there's healing that's needed.

  15. In endsinger ex, I think around In and out phase. the healer didn't heal everyone to max, with 70% hp the boss's next attack will decimate me. Me as RDM, I heal myself to max. But if the healer complains about my dps and tell me his dps is close to mine, then F U, you aren't doing your job. If no one complains, then yeah, in a fight, just be flexible. me as RDM lose gcds, ressing, healing, support. but as long as it clears, it clears.

  16. The meta will always matter because community perception dictates how most people play the game. My favorite job is MCH but I have no reason to bring it into prog when I could bring BRD or DNC and fill the same role but better. People talk about bring what you want but that matters only when the content you are doing will be easy to the point of not even mattering or when you know you arent trying to push progression. Like on a farm night Ill run something like MCH because I know the fight and know I wont by hindering the group. But during prog while I could bring a MCH I know and my group knows Im really just holding us back. Viability doesnt equal bringability.

  17. The one thing I strongly disagree with is the statement "most players will do better with the potential dps meta job". In reality, imo, most players will do best with the job they have the most experience with (barring crazy things like all the dps happening to be BLM mains).

  18. The meta matters in 1% of content. This being speed kills. Is MCH in a bad spot? Yes, but it can clear content just fine. If you are having trouble reaching a fights dps checks, then that is a skill issue, not a meta issue. Meta is stupid in 14, and you should play what you find fun.
