Compare Alexandria in FF14 to FF9 – FFXIV Lore

Lets explore some similarities between both worlds from the viewpoint of the Kingdom of Alexandria!

Final Fantasy IX is one of my favourite in the series, must have cleared it fully at least a dozen times.
I was so happy to see it recreated in FFXIV and in such detail we have never seen any other FF series title receive in FFXIV.

Thank you so much for watching this video.
My channel is focused on player perspective content, gameplay, theory’s and importantly game lore for Final Fantasy XIV.
As this channel has grown, my goals have evolved, but ever do they remain the same.
That is the creation of videos that mean to bring a smile to a viewer’s face or provide them with even one piece of useful information.

I mean to live up to these goals and the time you have taken to watch my content.

  1. There is also a fate in Living Memory in Yesterland where Lalafells dressed as bunnies or something come up, and the song for the "Faerie Battle" encounter in FF9 plays. It is a 2 part fate, with 2 boss bunnies in the end.

  2. I would love it if all the previous final fantasies in the series were "reflections" and we could travel there and experience what it's like well after everything is changed. lol

  3. Sphene and Garnet aren't really counterparts. They're both royalty and share a surname, but Sphene is more a reference to Garnet instead. Otis and Steiner are more of a counterpart scenario. Sphene reminds me specifically of the romanticized idea of Queen Brahne that the people of Alexandria had and chose to remember her as after her death in IX. Garnet loved her people, but her motivations were much more aligned with finding out what happened to her mother, who Kuja was, what he was plotting, and eventually banding together with the gang to save the world. Brahne however was remembered for her particular love and adoration for her kingdom and its people.

A fun thing to note is that there are NPCs in the second area that reference the jump rope minigame from IX with three girls playing it. As for the reflections, Alexandria and Lindblum and Cleyra and others were from the Twelfth. As that shard is the one that was rejoined via lightning in the Second Umbral Calamity. The Milala race that Krile comes from is oddly enough from the Twelfth after they came from the Sixth. As they mentioned, their world of endless summer was consumed by ice which aligns with the Fifth Umbral Calamity. While it is odd that the 5th happened before the 2nd from their perspective, it aligns with the idea from Shadowbringers that time flows at incredibly varying rates in each reflection. So did the 5th Calamity start before the 2nd, but only came to the Source as the 5th well after the Twelfth was rejoined.

  4. I also came to the realization that FF9 and FF10 have very similar core plots, and thus very similar to FF14's Alexandria. With the Endless being very similar to Dream Zanarkand.

  5. One hint that we had before dawntrail came out was that one of the preorder bonuses for dawntrail is a zidane minion. Seeing all the stuff in game just made that more clear that it was a hint

  6. 11:49 – I kind of disagree! Garland is at least partially successful in merging Terra with Gaia, he just didn't get to fully override Gaia as he'd originally planned (but this may still be continuing). I guess this is mirrored in XIV as only a small portion of the worlds merge.

A lot of the souls of Tera are integrated into Gaia, he did save a good portion of his people at a minimum (and eradicated many souls from Gaia in the process). The YouTuber Final Fantasy Peasant has a good video on this 'Did Garland Succeed?' if you have 30m to burn! There's no 'right' answer a lot of things are up in the air, just a topic I find interesting.

  7. Listen, this is a really great video.
But it's a little tiring when you constantly start a sentence.
Then continue the same sentence while saying it like it's a new sentence.
    The cadence gets very tiring.
To the ear as the video goes on.
Even though I really want to listen and see all the comparisons.
    Which again are really great.

  8. The second half of this expansion must be a bit odd for people who never played FF9.
Fortunately for me, I did and it is an all time favourite.

I personally found it almost offensive (in a weird but good narrative way) how much Alexandria had changed from a beautiful kingdom to what we see with Solution 9. That place has brought a lot of problems to the Source.
Needless to say, I am VERY keen to find out more about Preservation. Do they still exist? Who is leading them? Does this theoretical leader's name begin with the letter K or G? Then again, Zorool Ja was the Kuja to the young Gulool Ja's Vivi, so maybe Preservation's leader, if they are still around, will be Garland with the twist being that they are our Cid's reflection.
Speaking of, Otis repping my boy Steiner was wonderful. Kinda wondering about Beatrix, though.

  9. Loved all the references and my inner child was hyping when I was told I got to duel with Wuk in the play. When swords of fury started playing and the narrator came up, it felt like being 12 again. References aside, I really hope we get to know more about Alexandria, that world's civilization and how it develops.

  10. Hmmmm… I never played any of the other FF games so I say anything about that… What I will say is… I dont know if it was such a good idea to start off a new story arc of FF14 after Hydaelyn and Zodiark involving an almost copy of another FF game… Or maybe its genius… To me this story was new but hearing about the connections makes it more interesting.

  11. Just a couple extras.

The cutscene at the start of zoraljas fight is thematically reference to the "you are not alone" scene in FF9.

The way sphene stands is very similar to yuna from ffx in the way she is drawn in concept/promotional art.

The first boss in the first dungeon is a monster in FF9 called abaddon

As well as all of the musical references

Thanks for the video! This just solidifies that this is my favorite expansion.

🎶 Your voice will still remember our melody
    🎶 Now I know we'll carry on
    🎶 Melodies of life
🎶 Come circle round and grow deep in our hearts
🎶 As long as we remember 💔

  13. Minor one I'm sure everyone has gotten, but Sphene's name is similar to Garnet's in that they are both types of precious stones. Though Sphene is now more commonly known as Titanite…

  14. ff14 is an omage to all FFs every expansion takes inspiration of a previous game, it is a love song to its previous titles and maybe even future titles if we keep it going for that long.

  15. I don't think this is the biggest crossover like you state at the end of the video. I'd say it's tied with Endwalker's crossover with FFIV and Shadowbringer's crossover with FFIII.

  16. Just to clarify at 8:35ish where you say it's likely set after FF9 and the adoption of Electrope. FF9 isn't directly tied to FF14 story wise, nor are the other titles but are instead just FFXIV specific adaptions and is more of a thematic and nostalgic call back – so like other references we've had to previous games think of it more like a unique independent reimagining for the FF14 story opposed to Alexandria or FF9 actually being in the past of the 12th Shard (the one alexandria and living memory resided in).
Whilst it's quite similar, it is its own independent iteration of Alexandria and other references from Gaia, but within the FF14 world.
