I'm kinda glad he stopped playing so I can get on Cactaur again. Lol been playing on there since launch and never could get in after he started playing lol
Some great info and fun numbers!
I’m excited to see what happens when Asmon returns! I think he’s already seeing Lost Ark burn out
I have nothing personally against him or any other professional streamer. That said, part of what wrecked WoW was the players' own assumptions that pros of various types – whether world first raiders, mythic+ boosters, or professional you tubers and streamers – were the "authorities" on our game, and were to be looked up to and catered to and listened to. The game is made up of millions of ordinary players. They are the ones who count. FFXIV was doing great and was already bleeding players off of WoW long before the streamers gave it their seal of approval – they just followed the wave. As I said, I have no personal animosity here, nor do I mind anyone as a person wanting to play any game. The importance of professional players is over-rated, and their influence on games is often directly at odds with what most non-professional players want out of the experience.
As a software engineer, yeah I like the data too. I think it is interesting and a testament to Zach as to just how on top of things that he is. For years a lot of us in wow were a one mmorpg kind of guy/gal and that wasn't very fulfilling. I think Asmongold actually correctly predicted the time was right for his stream to open up to other types of gaming experiences because we all were ready. Most of us had moved on to play other MMORPGs and once you leave the daily grind that forces you into I think it's naturally to just play other games. I was playing FFXIV for a least a year before Zach joined, but the second I left WoW I started playing ESO, GW2, FFXIV, LOTRO etc. WoW's daily grind really made it feel like you didn't have time to do anything else, so in that sense I think the genre won, not just FFXIV. In a sick, twisted way you can even say WoW won. Nothing was going to force them out of that negative cycle except loosing players to other games.
The XIV devs want to get rid of the extra instances in the new zones. It'll be awkward as fuck when they do that and then Asmon comes back 2 days later, surging capacity back to pre to high levels.
real question Ginger….why does anyone care what asmondgold thinks? Everytime i've heard him speak he's full of cringe and doesn't offer anything of value
Very interesting video!
It was Asmongold that got me back into FFXIV. I put in a couple of hours then put it down. That was 2 years ago. I'm hooked on this game. However, it was also channels like yours and Zepla that got me to give it a shot again.
This is my opinion, I believe what makes a great MMO is when every time you log in there is a queue.
A part of me feels like this video might be strategic on your part: Zach is currently looking for a new game since he beat Elden Ring and I'd like to think you made this video in the hopes of buttering him up and bringing him back to the game 😉
"Asmongold rush" is a phenomenal pun
Really great video Brian! Top quality! 👍 Popular name + popular game = More viewers and more players. 😁 I still remember the insane rush of new players, who followed Asmongold into FFXIV. It was a bit crazy. 😅 But being on an European server I didn’t see too much difference myself. Now that most people have finished Endwalker, as indeed did Asmongold, the server seems empty. But that has always been the case post-expansion. 😋 I did see more FFXIV content creators pop up on my YouTube feed, and their numbers showed they were new to the game and even to YouTube itself. As long as the numbers keep rising, the trend will continue. Ultimately, it means success and monetary gain as well. Thank you for your hard work!! Stay safe. ❤️
While Twitch numbers show us a picture, it does not show the full picture. Not everybody plays while watching Twitch – or YouTube, for what is worth. I would take these numbers with a grain (or two) of salt. But I tend to agree, SqE got nice "free" advertisements with Zack, Preach, Zepla, Rich C and Michael B (Bellular) also covering FF14. I don't recall seeing any TV ad for FF, but I do remember Mr. T, William Shatner and many other big shot Hollywood names doing WoW TV advertisements. Good for the game as it got more players to experience it and to stick around either at pre-post major patches or at all times (as you and me), bad for players for more players to queue up (as we saw during EW launch) or with non-SqE mindset about their in-game interaction with other players.
As I once said, I still think it was a positive impact overall. Or maybe I'm just too optimistic about mankind 😂
Great video do one on Preach since he's still playing the game and throughly enjoying to this day
I appreciate this highly edited video format quite a bit, good work!
I started playing WoW when it first released, and I played it for years, into the Shadowlands. As a WoW player I always disliked Asmongold. I felt like he was a poor representation of the WoW community or at least from my personal experience. I also started playing FF14 when it released but I never stuck with it, because WoW was always my “main game.” When I finally made the decision to swap to FF14 full time Asmon made his move shortly after. I was initially furious, and constantly noticed a lot of the FF community push back towards the “WoW refugee” directed at everyone who assumed we were all asmongold. However, during his time playing FF I felt like he went through a major transition with his behavior and his community. So did he have a positive impact on the game? Sure but, I think the game also had a positive impact on him.
Honestly, I think he as a streamer had to break some of his own barriers. Asmons not found as much luck doing variety streams in the past outside Dark Souls. The thing is Zack likes Beserk. He had to hide it. Like some of the other things from Japan he enjoys.
I think if anything he helped open peoples mind, like Preach(Mike) did. He gave it a platform and a chance.
Those are some sexy graphs Brian. Golly Preach doing some big numbers. Pyro doing great too. I don't think Pyro is going anywhere. I think Preach will come and go. Check in every now and then.
Thank you Brian, these numbers were what I wanted to know.
I think Asmon will return when he starts to get low on content. 14 is more of a rock. People like to watch it and he's enjoying the game. He knows from Rich how good it is. He's just going to make an event like before where people are thirsting for his video. I doubt he forgets that his highest stream was 14. Or that a game director spoke candidly with him for almost an hour.
AsmongoldTV was a mistake.
I do like Asmongold but like any big streamer these days they will ride the wave of hype over a new game and move on to the next one. In fairness that's how he keeps up his popularity, more power to him.
Sadly I unfollowed Asmon about 2 weeks ago. Maybe this isn't a good reason, but I u followed him due to the fact that in one of his videos I kind of felt he was shitting a little on FFXIV and for the fact that he is highly promoting Lost Ark. Which I feel is a HUGE pay to win game. Really tired of games like (WoW and Lost Ark and their pay to win methods.
Selbina music. Thank you.
I’m just glad he never landed on sarg … sarg is already congested ( with awesome people ) originally we thought he’d be on sarg
Asmogold brought the attention of everyone who spent quarantine chasing the classic wow nostalgia and didn't want to grind rep for TBC to FFXIV. And the free trial already being massive really helped the entry for players like me.
The Asmon-gold rush lol…. That was a good one.
My take is that asmon has become more or less a king maker of games/mmo's…. he brings light to them and if the games live up to their promise, they see growth… if not, they return to obscurity or loose support from ppl that had been on the fence on whether to continue or leave.
I came to ffxiv because of asmon, haven’t touched WoW since
Ive been watching Asmon for years. Anyone with half a brain could see that he is a closet weeb and enjoys anime and other forms of entertainment. I wasnt surprised at all that he enjoyed FFXIV.
Was a good run. Wish you and your family the best.
I dropped WoW and got to experience Zack playing AAR/HW and then Preach with his insanely amazing FC, FFXIV has my sub and my heart. KWEH!!!!!
Smooth jazz deep voice outros have been an excellent touch
I honestly don't play ff14 I found you through outriders and your just a nice dude and I love it!
