an HONEST REVIEW of Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood

After having reviewed both A Realm Reborn and Heavensward it was of course time to review the Stormblood expansion as well. Though I knew that Shadowbringers is loved by many, I wasn’t sure what the opinions were regarding this particular story. With Stormblood we get some great new improvements including some better looking graphics and enviroments. The dungeons and boss battles also rise to new heights and are amongst the best ones yet. But the story unfortunately is, for the most part, very standard and by the book to a fault. Heavensward had set such a high standard with storytelling for an MMORPG and Stormblood unfortunately does not set the bar higher. Hopefully Shadowbringers will show us how it’s done!

  1. I pretty much agree with this entire review. I will say though, that the Omega vs Shinryu fight at the end of the heavenswards quests had at least me really excited for stormblood, which was promptly squashed as soon as the escalation of ala mhigo was halted for a change of pace in Doma.

Despite the gameplay and world just being a complete upgrade in every conceivable way, the story to me felt like it was two halves that never really had the connecting tissue necessary to not be jarring and keep me invested throughout. Honestly, in retrospect the stark difference and suddenness of the location change in the cinematic should of been an indication that we are going to start in one place and end in another, and there probably won't be a satisfying link between the two. It doesn't help that even the authors for the story were not the same in both halves. Natsuko Ishikawa only authored the Doman half of the story, and it was Banri Oda who wrote the rest. I think they definitely learned from this, and decided that one author who was consistently the main lead writer for the whole main scenario was best.

Overall I think Stormblood will definitely be something that needed to happen to progress the story and world, but they definitely did not execute nearly as well as they should of to live up to Heavensward's expectations. Hope you enjoy shadowbringers more than you did stormblood, i'm pretty sure most did.

  2. How come no one mentions how annoying it is to consistently defeat "The Empire" and their strongest leader…. Only to have a cutscene reveal a new stronger "Emperor"…..

I get the story must progress, but duct taping new rungs to the end of a ladder simply to reach new heights will always destine failure.

Certainly not my only complaint with Stormblood. And honestly had the passion from the community not be so strong about ShadowBringers. I'd have quit.

And WHO IN THE FUUUHHHH, decided "Oh you have 100+ hours…. Now we shall have you try out new characters and classes!" Not only in mid-game content, but yes, in FINAL BOSSES of the whole expansion………… "Oh, btw, if you fail this already 20 min long fight due to DPS capability limits, YOU WILL restart from square one."

I almost Summit1G'd my monitor, I've never malded so hard in my life.
