  1. One of the things that impressed me was how the company and developers apologized for the poor state of the game. It wasn't the usual mealy-mouthed corporate "We're sorry you idiots don't appreciate our greatness" apology. They really had wanted to make what they thought would be a great game, and when they realized they'd failed to do so, they owned up to it, didn't try to blame everyone and everything but themselves. They admitted, "we made these choices, these design decisions, these resource allocations, and they were wrong". (Not the literal words, but that's the underlying message: This is on us.)

    Most companies, with a failed launch, would have just put the game in maintenance mode, kept the servers alive along enough to recoup most of the dev costs, and fire or reassign 95% of the dev team. (While the managers still got huge bonuses, of course.) And generally, the choice to "throw good money after bad" is a bad one. Especially in games, where if a game doesn't launch strong, it's usually in the bargain bin in a week. That SE managed to pull it off and created a commercial and creative success, restoring their reputation, is a incredible. Offhand, the only other game on this scale that managed to recover from a poor initial launch is No Man's Sky. There may be a handful of others, but they are still rare exceptions.

For the record FFXIV is not bigger than WoW yet the google trends comparison Asmongold did a few days ago compared World of Warcraft: Shadowlands against Final Fantasy XIV compare it against Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers instead you see WoW is 10x bigger tho gap is closing atm by the looks of it and only country in the world with more searches for Shadowbringers than Shadowlands is South Korea

  3. Level loss (or XP "debt") was common in MMOs. EQ, for example, had some severe XP loss on death. (Combined with you rezzing naked and needing to return to where you died to recover your gear… and consider if you got killed fully equipped, imagine how well you'd do nekkid.)

    This is one reason that OGs laugh when people talk of WoW Classic as "hardcore". When WoW came out, it was known as "EQ E-Z-Mode".

  4. I never played any FF before i started FF14…now after 2 and a half years, i have over 200 days of playtime in ff14, and have played every ff mainline game, and now have the largest ff collection in my country…so yeah…ff14 is something 🙂

What YoshiP was saying was that they had a lot of old school developers who were artisans in the game industry who were used to the old way of hand crafting assets in their games where as the game development industry had moved forward from that already and now utilized what's called "middleware", which is essentially a way for a developer to mass manufacture assets for a game that don't utilize nearly as many resources as the individual hand crafted assets do. Making it feasible to do more robust things in games. Square Enix at the time was only just starting to develop their middleware tools called "Crystal Tools" which wasn't available during the development of 1.0

  6. one cool thing they could do as a "break in case of emergency" situation is if 14 ever was in a position where they need to increase sub base, they could always tie ff11 sub to f14. FF11 has a strong following and many of them would like to try 14, but wouldn't because they would need to pay 2 sub fees. I'm the inverse myself. I would love to try ff11, but I can't justify paying two sub fees for ff online games. I honestly think the only reason why 14 hasn't overcome WoW yet is because their base is split between these two mmos.

  7. Some of the best online games were on PS2. Tony Hawk's Underground, SOCOM II, and FFXI. All of the initial races and classes and starting areas in FFXIV are pretty much copied off of FFXI too.

  9. FFXI is still alive and well! The population isn't what it used to be but there are still a couple servers with a good amount of people. You should definitely check it out. Almost 20 years of content to see!

  10. How cool is that you say. I know that as I was there. 2-3 hour long event where devs spawned monster Lv99 all over even inside uldah etc
    Then the servers shut down and the End of an era trailer started playing and everyone on team speak broke down in tears as we were never going to be able to see the old version again

  11. I played FFXI on PS2. I still have the system and that brick adaptor.

    And yes, FFXI was much slower. By comparison, when I played the level cap was 75. It took me two years to get my first 75. 

    The primary means of gaining exp was exp parties. You group with random people (put your flag up, hope for an invite, or try to put one together yourself, usually only viable if you were a tank or healer), pick a spot in an area suitable for your level, set up a camp, and pull mobs to that camp. If other parties were there you'd have to fight for pulls. Sometimes you'd sit around all day just trying and failing to even get a party. Some days you'd get to the party only for it to break up minutes later. If you died you lost 10% of your level. Most people would stay till they had 10% to their next level, because if you died you could de-level. It was brutal and slow. But you made good friends for the struggle. If you found a good party, you wouldn't want to leave, and would be there for hours with the same group. If you were super lucky you got a couple levels. If you got three you probably needed to take a food and bathroom break hours ago. Often you didn't even get one, but you got closer, at least.

    edit: now that I think about it, Thancred does share some similarities with Squall. Maybe Albsterz is a genius LOL

  13. FF11's got a great storyline too. Worth checking out if you ever need a break from FF14.

    Spending way too much time just shooting the breeze with your chat in this video.

    All of us that were playing FF11 at the time knew that FF14's launch would be a disaster because we saw FF11's quality improve dramatically when they brought in a new dev team for it because they had pulled all the original FF11 devs over to FF14. Those new devs that essentially saved FF11 from the death spiral it had been in at the time then went on to save FF14 as well after its failure.
