It's hard to even consider FFXIV's gearing process a system at this point. It's a tickbox and a 'must be this high to ride' gate, nothing more. We know exactly the process, the fights, the tomes needed, the patch drops – there is no mystery or expression to what should be a fundamental system to any MMO built around growth and progression.
I personally have so little desire to actually gear my character because nothing really changes anything. Yes the ilvl goes up, but most content can be done at min, and the DPS number goes up a little too. In 6 months all the work you do gets erased and you're at the start of the checklist again. Repeat 3 times per expansion and then enjoy the new MSQ.
My experience in other MMOs is so completely at odds with FFXIV's paint by numbers approach and I don't understand how we're all so on-board with the formulaeic nature of almost every single core system in this game. You said it yourslef – it's boring – so why should we be happy with it?
Gearing in FFXI is more interesting.
a few changes to base gearing would have the 24 man gear be of the same ilvl as the savage gear since it comes out so late (and is harder to gear up in the 24 mans than the normal and savage gear since its entirely rng based.)
One problem SE has found itself with its current gearing process was highlighted in the 2nd tier of eden since it didn't have an ultimate tied to it, making all the gear kinda useless (outside of glamour.) since crafted gear would be 10 ilvl higher, something brought up by lynx kameli before his infamous last video. Getting BiS should have a purpose, and while SE has done a decent job of having BiS being used to get into ultimates and a shiny weapon from beating it, they have pigeon holed themselves into it now.

Souls games have a shitty gear system as well talking specifically the armor. The accessories is what keeps it interesting and I imagine if square did the same with its accessories they wouldn't have to worry to much about balance. Armor for the glamour accessories for the builds.
This isn't a gear issue, this is a fundamental game design philosophy issue. YoshiP and S-E are content to have boring, slow-paced combat with no room for personal expression, no interesting choices to be made, and on the rare occasion that something is interesting, like non-standard black mage, that is treated like a failure that needs to be corrected, even if it ruins the class, rather than a success to be duplicated.
Any aspect of the combat game that has ever been interesting has been removed, from healer stances to DOT classes to gearing choices to non-standard rotations.
They are not going to fix this because it's not broken. FF14 has inferior combat because it's supposed to have inferior combat. The goal is balance first and last. If you want to have fun, then play optional content like blue mage, deep dungeons, Bozja, Eureka, etc.
The game is a theme park by design. Pay your ticket, ride the ride, buy the tee shirt, and repeat.
Set bonuses are cringe. Sounds very WoWfugee coded.

The word "balance" or "balanced" is a curse word in XIV that is causing the game to slowly die, sure everything is balanced but everything is also bland and boring, no actual fun and wacky stuff just for the sake of it.
Devs need to embrace the fun of the game more rather than balanced, who cares if a job does a bit more damage than other one if youre having fun? BLM people sure didn't care, SMN was by far the best caster in EW but there was still a LOT of BLM players in EW, they didnt care about balance, they cared about their rotation that is now removed from the game cuz "balance".
i have been WAR main since i started the game in ShB and i didn't care it was the "worst" tank for most of EW, i cared that it was by far the most enjoyable tank to me, i didn't care if DRK or GNB did more damage or had better cooldowns or whatever, i just like my big axe boi.
saying that MMORPG a ROLE PLAYING GAME to not have fun or unique stuff is "fine" is the most cursed stuff i have ever heard from someone, calling XIV an RPG is pretty insulting to the whole genre since there is almost nothing that differs you from anyone else since character progress is non-existent, only thing different is how you look and what is your name but the actual RPG elements like gear and such don't affect it anymore.
also saying that its fine for bozja or eureka to have unique and fun stuff cuz "its bozja, who cares? lets have fun" is like saying that content outside of bozja is supposed to NOT be fun, saying that bozja is allowed to be fun and unique but dungeons, trials and raids can't be fun cuz those elements are only for bozja is exactly what is wrong with this game, fun > balance anyday, this is something SE needs to learn
the pokemon example was also probably the worst example i have heard when comparing something cuz it straight up does not work, saying "if one pokemon is water and one is ice, does that mean one of them is better? no" is straight up wrong, ice pokemon are one of the worst pokemon types in those games cuz lack of super effective moves and having bad resistances, so your point makes absolutely no sense cuz water pokemon are absolutely way better than ice pokemon, so it just does not work, didn't wanna sound too negative, but saying that XIV is fine as it is is killing the game slowly and why im so overly passionate about it, people saying EW was a good expansion proves how much copium people are inhaling defending SE and their lazy asses, don't defend devs cuz "game developing is hard" they are getting paid to do this and they made excuses after excuses and never learn from anything cuz people are defending them constantly even when they fuck up massively
Love FF14 but Gearing in this game is really bad and boring.
