The Square Enix online store actually ran out of digital download codes for the MMO FFXIV.
The influx of players, encouraged by the games recent surge of popularity helped in parts by Asmongold streaming the game on Twitch, lead to character creation servers being taken offline.
But the games insane success, is a far cry from its absolutely awful beginnings.
Thanks as usual to the beautiful people supporting on Patreon, and Twitch.

Josh, favorite FF14 food item?
Good thing I played ARR when it launched and eventually quit because of all the weeb dps pulling shit. :p
So, I joined the game about the time that patch 2.3 came out when Ramuh became a boss, mid 2014. Ended up joining an FC with a couple of veteran players who had played 1.0 because a coworker who played too was in it. I had a hard time getting sorted out for the first week or so, being my first real mmo experience. But the game was exceptional and I fell in love with all the systems, especially the crafting and challenging myself with the then harder to master classes.
Played up until about 4.3, years under my belt of playing, stopping only because of personal life reasons. But I never forgot the exceptional storytelling, player relationships I built and lost, the vast amount of hours spent doing the constantly updating endgame content with cool people… Really, if I ever have the chance to play again, I wouldn't hesitate to jump right back in to see what I have missed and see if my friends are still around.
I WIN! I have a double, double barrel name. That's 2 hyphens!
Now all i need is content
i tried . didnt like the graphics.
Love the vid mate and also love the damn cup! 😀
that intro is gold
I beta tested 1.0 and even keeping the beta crust in mind, the game seemed so bad that I didn't buy it. Later, I bought it around the launch of heavensward, but lost interest a bit quickly due to various issues. This year, I came back and this time, I brought friends. First one, then another, then others heard about our adventures and joined in. This weekend, we finished the Realm Reborn story together with even a few first time players outside our friend group being picked for the rest of the party. It took awhile to take off, but now we're invested.
I like everything about FF14 except the boring tab target combat system.
Unintentionally part of the surge. Heard about ffxiv while playing other MMOs like bdo but I think asmongold being pressured into finally playing after years is what broke the camel's back for me into giving it an actual thought. Started researching classes and getting opinions on the subreddit etc…
This is really interesting to see as I picked up the game recently but a month or two before all of this as I just quit my previous MMO in May and moved over after hearing most ppl from my old game moved to FFXIV. Really cool to see the game really pick up, especially after playing an under populated game in Tera for the last several years.
Josh: you need millions of pounds to make a mmo
Me the American I am: pounds of wha- oh
SOLD OUT = Our ancient servers can't fit ppl leaving World of Ugly.
Wtf seriously. Its a good thing i managed to get the complete edition when it was on sale last month
I remember when I first played FFXIV…really didnt like it, thought it was slow and confusing, I played it like I played WoW and tried to skip through so much and never read anything or cared about the stories…because in WoW, why would you? they suck. This was right before Stormblood.
Finally when shadowbringers came out and before shadowlands in wow, I gave FFXIV a shot again. Promising myself to try a different playstyle (tried leveling healer first, this time dps) and actually go through it. Once I started actually playing the game and not looking for ways to hate it because it wasnt WoW I really enjoyed it. I realize the beginning was just a tutorial mode but it really helped me learn everything and realize just how much more depth to the game there was than I am used to in WoW.
About level 15-20 is when I started feeling regret. Regret of how much time I wasted in WoW. FFXIV was just so much better and every day I was finding out more and more depth to the game that made WoW feel like a cheap knock-off that was only 10% done. The crafting alone. BLU mages. The cool funny side story lines that play out like a funny anime cartoon. The saucer. The pvp. All of it…just so good. Kept asking myself why in the world did i settle on playing WoW. WTF was I thinking to give them so much time and money?!
Then I hit the end of the story of a Realm Reborn, right before heavensward. The Game of Thrones like cinematic and story. So so so good. Hooked me right there. Never once in WoW's story have I ever been that invested in the characters and story. Ever. When you complete it, especially in one sitting those pieces, you will see what I mean. From there I just went through and did everything till the end. Had a blast.
Eventually I tried to go back to WoW and play shadowlands. But I was constantly disappointed. Found myself constantly comparing the games and then I realized…yeah…blizzard did that on purpose. BLIZZARD WANTED US TO COMPARE THE GAMES. Shadowlands? Even the name is stolen from Shadowbringers. The first zone you go to being Bastion? With purplish/pinkish trees and beige colored ground? First area of shadowlands is Lakelands with purplish/pinkish trees with beige ground. The mirrors and blue crytals in Bastion? The crystal tower and mirrors in Lakeland. The gauntlet tower that Blizzard implemented in shadowlands? Yeah…I was well aware of it because i did it in FFXIV quite a bit…even the UI is the same. The whole other zone where the tower is in Shadowlands, with the hunts and events? Yeah…Stormblood a previous expansion in FFIX had "The Hunt" in its area as well.
Blizzard went out of their way to copy FFXIV and to try and make people compare the two. Probably hoping people would think Blizzard did it better….but they didnt. They took the ideas but didnt realize what made the ideas fun in the first place. The story in FFXIV and the purpose it gave you to do those ideas….all missing from WoW. Like they copied what someone said and repeated it themselves but didnt understand the context. All this of course while Blizzard was running all this on a completely broken engine that had well known and established bugs that were reported in which Blizzard finally responded and said "Oh well".
In the end I said screw Blizzard. So sick and embarrassed for making up excuses for them over the years. Them charging people to play their beta game that they never test themselves and only do "balancing patches" as new content and consider that bug fixing. Its BS. FFXIV and their developers are so much more deserving of the money and attention. I love how you can literally give them suggestions in their QnA and they will yell to a dev there on site to write it down and it gets added as a test run in the game. Its how some of the saucer stuff got put in there…its also why some random stuff comes in and then is never brought back because lets face it, not all suggestions are winners. But the fact they are there and willing to try is just cool.
I suggest anyone who likes collecting pets to try out Lord of Vermillion in the saucer. Also try out controller and sitting in a recliner and your TV for relaxing content. Have some fun 🙂
I just fucking love your mugs lol
I played FFXI when it first came out. I had hopes for FFXIV 1.0 but my PC at the time couldn't play it and then I heard all the negatives about it and didn't sign up. I had a friend on it and I watched him play and was unimpressed. I was on FFXIV 2.0 when it came out. Actually I was part of the beta for it as well. I have only played sporadically throughout the years though as I am not a heavy gamer. It is a fun distraction from time to time.
As someone who's loved this game, loved the concept of how it was reborn from that…. start….. met my boyfriend who I now live with and have 2 cats with – knowing that it sold out makes me so happy. This game is great. Majority of players are totally cool with people not being ~the best~ and will help you if you need it. I just ugh I love this.
Avoid limsa tho.
Crowfall, as shiiiiiiiiiit as it is, needs to learn from this.
Im thinking of joining the FFXIV community just to give blizzard the boot over their horrendous treatment of female employees
Would love to play it…bought it….cannot setup account with square enix. fuckit
