Cloud Servers – The Future of FFXIV? | SoH | #378

The Cloud Data Center test has been a success, and we discuss our experiences and opinions on the test so far. Can this be the future of FFXIV’s servers? We also discuss the Pizza emote which is now on the online store, as well as some of your MogMail, including more theories about XI’s connection to XIV.

  1. For the MSQ, I think there has to be a balance between "new start point, skip everything" and "here's 1̶0̶0̶ I mean 80 post ARR quests, good luck"
They could easily cut this down to 48 quests (8 for each patch) and instead of making the player hike to new locations every time they could include free teleports or aetheryte tickets that when used teleport you to the nearest aetheryte to the quest NPC.
ARR itself could be condensed as well, combine and shorten the Level 1-15 quests into 15 quests instead of 23, the same for the 15-20 quests where there are SIX quests all on the same NPC and just have you wandering around Drybone. Cut the quest that requires a costume as well, or rework it into a single quest chain that doesn't have you go back to isembard six times.
The rest also have several quest chains where you go in a circle and do random unfun stuff as well. Everyone hates the Titan quest chain, and it could be streamlined a bit to prevent backtracking several times.

  2. Honestly, Emet-Selch's (second) death and Hythlodaeus' in Ultima Thule were the ones that hit me the hardest. Even though they were not Scions and were technically already dead.

  3. For the issue with ARR and the prior expansions being too long because people want to play with their friends, just allow their friends to "mentor" to their level and redo the old content with them. All of the systems to do this basically already exist in game with item level synch and being able to go back and do old content on your own initiative. It kills two birds with one stone for the people that say there isn't anything to do and if they wanna play with their friends.

  4. 26:00 holy moly getting through it in 4 months – I just hit a year at the end of October and I just /started/ Shadowbringers on Halloween (best day to start that expansion tho, highly recommend it as a halloween experience). Yesterday I got to the level 80 area. Its always so interesting to me to see how people progress through the game at different paces haha. I love being slow burning about it through.

  5. I'll never understand why people always feel like the only way to make stakes for the story is to kill off a character. It's boring and annoying. You go through all this stuff with these characters and then they kill someone off? That's lame, there's no chance for character growth or interesting dynamics with deaths.

  6. The options for grounding Vana'diel in FFXIV canon aren't great for either game's canon/setting so honestly I'd be content with it just being some parallel world, kind of like how they hand-wave other FF crossovers but with more meat on the bones. They're just too different to really mesh as canonical aspects of each other.

And I already miss that sweet, sweet cloud server ping. I had a ton of fun watching chat in Costa del Sol and the Tempest during the big 'parties' and I'm glad I was able to be there.

Rest in peace C'oud Thyme, I'll be finding time to fantasia a retainer in your honor sometime this weekend.

  7. I don't see how 11 lore fits into 14. Sure, the Zilarts could have emerged on another shard 12,000 years ago and their society could have collapsed 10,000 years ago, but they were described as pretty close to flawless beings with telepathic abilities, not the malformed creatures Emet eyerolled. Evolution would have had to take a wild rollercoaster for that to make sense. xD
