To me: the reason why they locked everything behind about a 2 year time frame is like you said about the twins, aging, but not just for the twins. For everyone in the world. There is characters who are in their tween years, characters who are about to hit their "grandpa/ma" status, and characters who are already at death's door. And they didn't want to make new models for these characters through out the story while every other side character is stuck in this 0 time pass universe. It's mostly budget and time issues I believe.
If I'm being honest, I've never really thought about it. And this video just kinda makes me shrug, lmao.
This should have been at least a year spent for each expansion at the very least. Even Meteor looked way older from ARR to EW.
A while back, I found an official translation of a comment from Yoshi-P that seemed to suggest players were free to adopt any timeline they liked, and that the devs simply weren't interested in having that part of the story be specific. Such a stance is utterly bizarre to me, but it wouldn't be the first time the devs made a choice that speaks to a completely different approach to stories than my own.
That said, I left a comment going over it on another YouTuber's video, but it's not in my comment history, so maybe it was a fever dream. Then again, a ton of comments I made on that particular YouTuber's videos are missing. >.>
That big thing coming up that the devs have been trying to prepare us for? I really, really, really hope it's a time-skip. I want to side-step the timeline issues and see the twins look the age they act.
So what you're saying is… the people of Eorzea went through MULTIPLE apocalypse level events, all in the span of ONE year?
Man… and I thought 2020 was bad. 🤣
I'd like to say the game takes place between 3 years or so. Putting everything into one year, espically after playing since ARR, feels ridiculous. I was really hoping they would force a time skip between 6.0 and 6.1.
For the algorithm
I love your rants.
A friend of mine and I are trying to catalogue just how long travel times are in Eorzea by almost every means available, and even teleportation can take a while because the average person on Etheirys needs time to recover from that kind of strain on the body. WoL is just built different and can do it without stopping. Don't know how long it would take altogether, but I PROMISE all of FXIV up until 6.2 was more than 1 calendar year
Time is weird in this game. I remember an Astrologian quest in Stormblood that implied a moon/month had passed between the quests.
My big problem is… deep breath Shadowbringers. Something I love about this game is the deep background to all of the nations and their interactions. I adored the refugee crisis and the trade talks between Ul'dah and Ala Mhigo after the latter's liberation (especially as it did such a great job of fleshing out Nanamo), I liked the bargaining with the beast tribes and all of the political stuff.
And then it all got jettisoned for a long vacation on the First. Shadowbringers isn't a bad story, but it feels shoehorned into the world of FFXIV. I would much rather have an expansion taking place in Dalmasca, or Bozja, or Werlyt. Places that have been affected by the Empire and actually matter to the ongoing plot of the game. If we removed ShB entirely, what would it change about the actual narrative progression of Eorzea's war against Garlemald? Hell, the Scions don't develop much either, tbh.
Also, I'm the one guy in the world that thinks Emet-Selch is a lousy villain. He's a whiny little shit that does monstrous things and the game expects us to feel bad for him. I'll feel bad for Gaius, who has to face the consequences of his sins in the Sorrow of Werlyt. He has to suffer the same pain he's inflicted on so many others, and the way he deals with it reveals him as a man deserving of respect. But I'm letting my rabid Emet hatred derail another post…
Another issue I have is in the First where it was said that time flows differently there but then suddenly just normalized when WOL/WOD got there.
In my head each expansión + Patches including base game is a year except for ShB. For example to me it’s been like 4 years. Because I feel the trust the scions have in the WoL is built through years of working together. But again that is in my head, I know in Game is a Time bubble where time passes but it amount to nothing, where only “five years have passed since the calamity”.
The "this only happened in a year" claim only works if a year lasts something like 3,500 days.
I doubt its only been a year and a half. I have been playing NG+ lately (I just finished SB).
You can see it with the placeholder WOL. T changes the body constantly (PH is male). While a transitioning person on t can get a beard in months, it usually doesnt happen in months. Wol doesn't just get beard….their skin ages, too.
The twins aren't human. Their lifespan is longer. So they could mature much slower than we think. I think they should've aged more, but honestly I don't like how adult elezen look anyway. Even with 5y, the only one that should look much different are the twins, you, and thancred. Non human races, we don't know. It is kinda funny how an adult is besties with teenagers xdd
Dunno about time but I don't see it as only a year. I do have a similar issue with the twins. Even more so bc they aren't identical….alisaie has excuse being female. Alphinaud is male tho… unless its identity it kinda doesn't make sense with growth. There are things that can happen but I doubt its any of those reasons
Its weird, but I guess I dont find it all that frustrating. You mention what is probably the "main" reason as to why we dont see the story over a longer period of time with the twins, though I think the same idea goes for other NPCs as well. I do think it was a bit of a slip up on squares part to make 2 of our most prominent party members basically kids for this exact reason. Had they just had them be like, 18 or 19 and post growth spurt for elezen, we could have had the story be a little more drawn out timeline wise, without the actual need for everyone to be looking old. While it can take me a bit out of the story, I usually dont care that much personally though.
Oh that? …………..uuuuuuuuuuh, ppl did asked that question years back. I forgot which live letter or fan fest it was about the passage of time. The community kind of given up on it because it’ll create another wave of problems……or already knew about it and brush it off. Cause then ppl don’t want to play old y’stola, old thancred, old twins, old uberdanger. No body wants to play them.
when the devs have to make official statements to clear up the way time's passed in the universe is uh…. hoo boy.
all up though up to endwalker they said it's been like 3-5 years since meteor.
Asd for the twins. they've mentioned elezen get a growth spurt. so there's probably gonna be a patch where we don't see the twins and then come to the next patch they come back and it's gonna be like "Holy SHit! when did you two get so big?" "Uh literally alst month while you were gone. we hit our growth spurts… at last."
My headcanon has it being at LEAST 5 years. At least.
Can you really say it amazing when characters get being back to life a bunch of time?
I am a player since the ARR beta in 2013… I really and truly hate the direction SE took with healing. It used to be unique. Then, starting in heavensward, they slowly started melding all healers into the same 1-2-3 homogenized formula. Scholar was mutilated. Astrologist no longer has its iconic card buff system. White mage is… white mage. Then we have Sage.. I love the dps mechanic which reminds me of the ARR scholar, but is still weak.
In short, SE hates healers and doesn't know what to do with them.
Yeah I agree with you I do really think that they should actually start have time passing because having all the stuff be in less then 2 years is stupid
