FFXIV: A Realm Reborn's Lost Trials



In the improvements to the game – adding Duty Support, reducing what little filler there was, and so on – a decision was made to alter or outright remove three trials from A Realm Reborn. These include Cape Westwind, Thornmarch (Hard), and The Steps of Faith.

In this video I’ll be showing off a full run of each trial in full. I’ll be giving some light commentary for each trial, but not nearly enough for the full duration of each. The goal was more Archival than anything.

But here you go, the three lost ARR Trials. At least the replacements are all cool too!

  1. Dunno how much of a hot take this is but, they should have kept these duties in the game but also replaced them the way they have. You could have "Steps of Faith (classic)" and "Cape Westwind (classic)" or something and still have "Thornmarch (Hard)" and the new version just be "Thornmarch". At the very least for archival purposes.

  2. Cape Westwind. Yes, it was a face-roll fight… and yet groups wiped often enough for me to say, "no, its not that easy". The being said, kill adds and you were usually on the safe side. I like what they did with the new iteration. First, its actually "hard", and you get the feeling that the guy really wants to win at all costs – also solo duties are best anyway XD Still, I think adding some health and add a few more mechanics would've fixed Cape Westwind's status as a community joke. But then again, they removed all ARR 2.0 8-man content… probably to easier AI but also make sure, new players realise that 8-man groups are where the game gets serious. … How about Cape Westwind Ultimate? 😀

  3. I am one of the people that cleared the original Steps of Faith. The fight was ungodly difficult. Took multiple requeues. Either people just noped out or the group was never going to complete it and time ran out. Took me days to finally beat it.

  4. I do find it quite funny how once they made cape west wind a solo duty it became one of the hardest solo bosses in the game. Phase 1 and the add phase are easy, but during phase 2 Aoe's that will one shot a tank on normal difficulty will cover 90% of the arena. Granted I was in ilevel 90 job gear at the time but it was still a huge difficulty spike.

  5. One of my strongest memories in FFXIV is clearing Steps of Faith on launch day through Duty Finder! It was definitely surprisingly difficult, and I had to leave for work, so I was on a timer. We managed to clear it on the pull before I would have had to leave. I actually kinda miss the original version where you had to use the weapon emplacements – it was a cool novelty, where there was finally something so big and powerful that you alone could not defeat it.
