My Spicy First Impressions of FFXIV

If you’re wondering why I kept playing FFXIV despite being a skeptical bitch it’s because I wanted to give the game an actual chance. Having played a few MMOs before, most of them don’t get fun until endgame, so my initial goal was just to get to endgame. And, it frankly wasn’t boring enough for me to stop… unlike some games (cough, lost ark, cough). AND my friend told me to stop skipping the story! I was super surprised by how much I enjoyed the story. However, I would say that the story, for me, didn’t get good until the climax of ARR and then into HW. After that it was fantastic c:

  1. I never saw the appeal of the female Viera in ff14, they all have the most dull expressionless faces, I really hope they get a rework at some point to look more then just soulless dolls.

  2. Fully agree with you on the character creation, I could never get into BDO cause the char creator was way too much to tinker with and near impossible to make a char you knew you where gonna be happy with, a problem I have with many games that use sliders over a selection of choices.

While I don't want ff14 to switch to using sliders, the character creator, like you said is one of the games weak points and needs a major overhaul.

What I'd like personally is to just have each option split up much more and with a much wider range choices and have nothing tied to a specific face preset.
Especially things like for example Au'ra horns being tied to the face choice is something that is awful and has to change.

I still believe SE should have used the budget for the races they (half arsed)added in ShB and instead reworked the whole character creator and original races, and then once that's been done it would be simpler to add the new races in later expansions, but of course as we know SE went with the option that is easier to market and make more money from sadly.

  3. I agree that the girls look weirdly young unless you know what you're doing. I haven't really changed my initial catgirl but I did use the fantasia to give her a slight facelift between when I did SB and ShB that was based off my looking at my friends who had more adult looking characters and changing the eye shape/nose/chin/lips on top of makeup to make her look more mature.

There were times going thru I thought that since I chose catgirl purely because it was the memetic choice for 14 that I should I have given it more thought and considered an AuRa or a Viera but I'm deeply in love with my character now so it's too late for me.

  4. I agree with sentiment of seeing another player with a character that's the same race as your own. Every time, I see a bunny boi and I'm like "Oh he's cute!" I zoom in on the face be like wait he looks like me 💀

When I first started I remember making a couple characters until I said F it and bought the game to be Viera. I walked all the way from Gridania to Ul'dah for stupid Thancred only to realize I couldn't see him right away because I didn't start in the correct city lol

  5. I didn't worry about character creation too much, I thought all the options and designs were interesting, and I felt like there was too much choice in this game. I always liked Fran from FFXII, so I got my own Fran and I love her. But I did notice the heads seem too small for the bodies on most characters. My Viera is an exception, but they need to make Hyurs/Hyur-type's heads slightly bigger. Lucia is a great example, her body is way bulkier than the head sitting on top of it. As for dungeons, I am bad enough at RPGs that only the very first dungeons feel boring after having played several hundred hours at this point (just finished HW). I am just anxious the whole time thinking we'll wipe and it'll be my fault somehow. However, I did my first Dun Scaith yesterday, and that raid is anything but boring. I'm going to have permanent trauma from that raid, it was so intense. But overall, this game is so smooth, virtually bug-free and so dense in lore and activities, I was on board almost immediately. ARR was a slow start but I loved it because of that. My journey has felt earned. All the leveling has been slow and so every level feels like a big deal, giving me time to learn the new occasional new ability.

  6. Character creation for me was kind of a meh thing, i didnt really like how all the races were too human and honestly kind of boring, i have played the game for 2 years now and i have fantasiad like 25 times cuz its incredibly hard for me to choose a race, i also care about animations and popularity of the race way too much… But now im a elezen enjoyer and i absolutely love my elezen (even tho elezen running animations suck ass…).

Also side note on the dungeon thing, ima midcore raider and have cleared 1 (soon 2) ultimates with my static and i also think the dungeons and even trials and normal raids are way too boring and easy, for some reason SE thinks that their players have not seen a computer in their lives, and instead of trying to teach the players to get good in the game, they make everything super braindead easy and they still wonder why people hate dungeons and roulettes.

I started my XIV adventure as WHM healer since i was healer main in TERA and WoW but healing was so boring in XIV due to lack of enemy damage and challenge in dungeons so i started maining tank and have not looked back (i like tanking now :P)
