Yes, but it's really robbing yourself of the games fullest experience. But yeah, it's possible to solo ff14 if you really want to.
It feels like you spend more time talking about FFXIV as apposed to actually playing it lol
I use to play FFXI then i would stand in a town all day looking for groups to do stuff with and had to ask myself if I was having fun and didn't play FFXIV due to fear that it was going to do the same thing, how wrong i was. I play every day and I have so much things I can do solo. I enjoy playing with others but I am happy to see solo players get a chance to play as well.
90% of what you see in FFXIV(in terms of story, concepts, magic, enemies, world, locations, etc) came from other FF games.
Then there is stranger of paradise. That game detest of things in general.
"You can if you want" I feel is the biggest difference between the games. "You can play 14 single player..if you WANT' which is such a major difference to how other games almost force it on you until it can't anymore. In ESO I felt like I was just playing skyrim with other annoying people running around taking my kills. Any time I DID group no one spoke or communicated or helped each other because the game had been so solo and generally dungeons felt that way too. 14 just says 'here is a mode to do this alone. Turn it on or off your choice.'. I know a few people who adore the trust system because they don't have time to sit around in DPS ques or arn't very 'good' at the game and fear dragging other people down. Having both means you need to flesh out BOTH not just slap other players onto a single player game and hope you can call it an MMO.
And they also realize their weakness- as ARR updates

It's a smart move to make the MSQ more soloable – one of the biggest markets FFXIV could grow into that don't play it are… console FF fans. It's a bit silly that a game that serves as a giant love letter to the franchise is largely snubbed by the people who love that franchise because it's online.
There will be a time that this game is dead and shutdown their server. And one day they'll make it playable offline so that everyone can play it in single player, especially with the revamp of old dungeons and trust system
Just grab a lv 90 friend and "solo" all dungeon and trials unsynced up to shadowbringers 🤣
The red border around thumbnail made it look like i have already watched video.
If it were a single-player game, it would be another Final Fantasy Tactics title.
While I was going through the MSQ, the only things I would do co-op, once per day, would be Leveling, Trial, Main Scenario and Alliance Raid roulettes. The rest of the time I was playing alone because the MSQ is most definitely NOT multiplayer content. You could argue that the dungeons you unlock are, but then you only do those once and then you need to continue with the MSQ on your own. This became most obvious to me when a friend decided to create a free account and try FFXIV. Initially, I was overjoyed that a new player gets to try the game I love and that we'll get to play together. However, I quickly realized that even if I could play another low-lvl job, the most I can do is ask them where they need to go for the quest and then stand around while they do whatever it is that the quest is telling them to do… or maybe I just act as a convenient, flying taxi service until they get to unlock the next dungeon in the MSQ.
The conclusion would be that, unless you've finished the MSQ or are in the exact spot in the MSQ as all your friends, you need to play this as a single-player game. While leveling, I even stopped joining the voice chat in my own group of friends (that had already finished MSQ ages ago) because if I kept doing dungeons with them I'd get to max lvl for the expansion I was in, but I'd never have the time to finish MSQ and unlock everything. Like it or not, gaming time is limited, and my priority was unlocking endgame, so that I can really start playing with my friends.
i have yet to see a online game as fun as ff14 star wars old republic is a close second but ff14 is still S tier star warsold republic is like B Tier.
One of the things I like about how they added the changes to the MSQ is that they made it where you can solo them, run it with AI Trust, or run it with others. Before this latest update, I (as a trial player) had to wait for people to be online and hope that I was put in a group that ran the MSQ I needed to run at that time. I play at different hours of the day in such a way that my schedule is not so easy to match up with most of the other players on the server so being a dps was frustrating for long wait times. The thought of being able to go through the entire story and watch all the cutscenes for the first time through at my pace without worrying about being put in a group who is trying to speed run the content is nice to have. I haven't experienced it yet in FF14, but in some other games I've had it where I and a few other first timers were stuck in a cutscene and the rest of the party ran ahead into the boss room and by the time the scene ended the door was closed for us to get into the fight.
The things I've noticed so far are:
– The AI is set to exactly the level of the dungeon you run, and you (at least in lower ARR content) can't change what classes your AI allies are.
– They programmed the AI to do what is needed for said dungeons, including the boss mechanics. So if I didn't know what the bosses are going to do, I could watch the AI and learn it without worrying about dying. In some ways, they are optimized to the point when before the boss telegraphs their attack, they already move to where you need to be.
– The limit break meter will only be used if the player uses it, otherwise it stays full. The few times I ran with others I wouldn't touch the Limit Break meter since I assumed it would be used for the healers to cast or the ranged Dps to use. Now I pretty either hold off on using it or wait till the boss is close to death before "finishing them with style."
– You get all the gear from the treasure chests. While that doesn't sound like a downside, the gear is randomized and you can't just say pass on a part you are unable to use (you have to discard it if you don't want it.)
I am hoping this works for all MSQ missions at least, including the ones that require 8 or more people because I heard of a mission later in the story that has multiple long cutscenes in it and I would love to enjoy the full thing without feeling like I am slowing others down. I know it is an MMORPG, but most FF games are story first, game second. If they didn't want people to experience the story, they would have put all the cutscenes outside of the dungeons.
I want to play solo because I have TOO MUCH ANXIETY playing with others.
I've had some really awful experiences with groups so being able to play with AI is wonderful.
