For the Thinker life forms don't strike me as especially mechanical? Their FF history (to my knowledge) are from FFXI, specifically Chains of Promathia expansion, in the Promyvion areas, where they were considered "hollow" creatures (if memory serves me right, it'll be on an FFXI wiki for sure)
