Problems in Final Fantasy 14’s core design have been in existence for a very long time, but it took the latest expansion Dawntrail’s terrible story to finally make the community see it.
Is this the begging of the end for FFXIV? Or can it be saved?

Reality for a moment. The core audience that "play" this game are those "toxic positivity" people that STILL refuse to acknowledge the problems. These people treat the game like Secondlife, a social chatroom, they will never unsub regardless of how bad the game is. They also are the core supporters of the in-game store. The game is still "perfect" for these people. The game will likely not improve as this mediocre slop is enough for these people.
Trust me I've been screeching from the heavens as a tank main about the lack of identity between jobs, and the total bastardization of Dark Knight from release in Heavensward till now. Unfortunately I put it to complaints of the game being difficult between ARR and Heavensward (though Heavensward was massively overtuned on release for raid difficulty. Remembering the Faust with a metric ton of health) that the game is furthering going into this weird phase of drawing lines in the sand for what difficulty they'd like to be in.
And this kills people like me who can't really do a static but would love to raid, but now I have to rely on other people getting things down. It's not nearly as friendly as it was in ARR where I could actually PUG all of Coils with the exception T9.
Really gotta wonder how it will continue. They spent a ton of time and resources into the Graphics Update since Endwalker launched, most likely to the detriment of a lot of other things, making it even more likely to just go with 'what you know' just to fill it up. It really didn't help the reputation that they kept telling Players to just go take month long breaks (but not more than a month at a time, as to keep your Housing).
Then again, Yoshi P before Dawntrail's release said they wanted to make encounter design 'more stressful' and from the looks of it, they did. So I still have trust in them actually meaning what they say…though time will have to tell if they will manage to deliver
I think that they cannot take another story risk like Dawntrail again. They need to look at what people are saying is wrong with Dawntrails story and put it on notepads of things to avoid next time, characters like Wuk Lamat being a big example. Bottom line is that people are very 50/50 about her, and Dawntrail is pretty much all about her thus people are 50/50 about the story as a whole, and when the only thing going for your game is its story? You can't afford to settle for a 50% approval rating, you need to go for a majority. Keep the story about the WoL, we tried the mentorship idea, and it wasn't executed well but it's too dangerous to try and do the same thing "But execute it better". They also need writers that understand that you don't need world endangering threats to raise stakes and make a story dramatic and gripping, you can accomplish that by introducing likeable characters and putting their lives in danger or putting the WoL in situations where if they don't act right, they're putting innocent lives in danger. (Hingashi bloody war arc would be good for this, the corrupt lords of Hingashi would 100% hold civilians hostage for the WoL's co operation).
As for gearing, I think they should just stop increasing stat numbers, from X.0 to X.55 keep the stats the same and instead give each tier set set bonuses for jobs like in WoW that incentivize doing the content and getting the full set, and multiple sets to play around with the different set bonuses each have. Make gearing less about the numbers, and more about what the armor does for the class like abilities and what not. I think the only time stat numbers should be touched at all is in higher difficulties of the same raids, so it's the same bonuses but with bigger numebrs.
I don't give a shit, at all, what people think I'm implying about what's wrong with the story or Wuk, brass tacks is that the story and her were not received well and that's just something folks who love Dawntrail & Wuk are gonna have to accept and even if they don't like that? Square has to make money, and if they want to keep making money then they have to look at what is taking it from them and eliminate these problems. The writers were weak in general is all I can say, I saw a lot of times where the WoL was held back when they shouldn't and wouldn't have been, for the sake of the story they wanted to tell to continue. Dawntrail as we know it would not have happened the way it did if the ARR-Endwalker WoL was the one that was written in the story, and that is something I've heard has upset people. We were a passenger, a restrained one, being told a story instead of experiencing one.
Sup Raz, bout time we threw some extra hay on the burning heap known as FFXIV: Dawntrail RazielHype 🔥
Let me borrow a comment from the featured Reddit post I personally most resonate with.
"The story can get 10x better but we would still be stuck with the same repetitive contents, boring quest structure, and non-interactive open world. The game needs to undego a fundamental overhaul if it wants to stay relevant for the next 10 years."
What im reading in said comment is we need a brand new MMORPG from Square. This whole flogging a dead horse for many many more years just aint it.
We can keep wishing for the sky to turn red, but short of a very small window after a thunderstorm + sunset/sunrise this just isnt going to be the norm.
To whoever is still on the fence, one foot out.. do yourself a favour and log the F out. Permanently.
Speak with your wallet. Drop a tear or two if you have to, no one really cares, certainly not Square 🤣
I lost my faith after Dawntrail released. I joined ff14 in march 2024 so I'm fairly new but I absolutely hate that they drip feed hrothgal hairstyles. Like cmon SE the ear placement for miqote and hrothgar are more or less the same. They could add the other styles, but they wont. Only good hairstyle to release is locked behind Ultimate Raid or a 25m gil MB… I just want my Alisae hair back.
I was so burnt on the game, and mechanics I paid for a full year and quit very early into Dawntrail and haven't come back. I'm still searching for that golden MMO (one day)
I never thought I'd get bored with the game. And even now, I want to play it, but it's just not scratching that itch anymore. I'm also really disappointed that the game's world becomes useless after the initial story/level grind. I really hope that one day, Yoshi P fixes the game. As a long-time mmo player, he should know how to do a better job than what they're currently doing.
P.S. It's been a while, but you're still looking damn good!
HEY! FFXIVs pvp for CC is really fun. That's cap, sir!! Sure, you don't get to use addons to play for you like in WoW, but it is fun.
Poor writing combined with the english voice cast continuing to get worse and worse doesn't make for a good story experience. The rest was fine
I dont think anyone disagrees FF14 is a top tier game in terms of story, presentation, lore, and music. Nevertheless they need to change the formula and being more transparent with their audience. They sometimes hint they "can't do X" because of budget or that it will take a lot of time because "it's difficult" when in reality it isn't.
Another problem FF14 has is working in a minimalistic way. Look at shadowbringer, we had bozja which was huge, raids, dungeons etc. Look at stormblood, raids, deep dungeon, EUREKA which had 4 whole sections. Bozja had only 2. These were long lasting activities with lots of rewards, multiple mounts, orchestion rolls, multiple armor sets, unique titles. Eureka brought a FULL relic armor and it was awesome. What do we get in D.T so far? nothing, although we are gonna get something similar to bozja, I doubt it will be as grandiose.
Look what happened with the "SUPER MASSIVE graphical update" Ooof, my device almost exploded trying to contain such massive update of such magnitude. Come on, the game looks dated and a graphical update to put it at least on PS4-like graphics would've done wonders. Instead we get….: Better looking grass!!! HD textures for all the races. 1% of the armors in game have better textures. When a new patch drops, about 12 sets + 8 paid sets are updated and we have to keep waiting until all of them are updated.
If they keep going like this, sooner or later another MMO will spawn and it will be a massive hit which will hurt them. FF14 sub isn't exactly cheap. They earn A LOT of money from subs and we get minimal stuff.
I'll never forgive them for what they did to BLM in Dawntrail.
Painfully bad stories and painfully bad job changes just make the game hurt to play.
I'm not a masochist, I want to have fun.
I've always hated the stat stick weapons and boring gear, nothing about the gear feels special. Being angry at the Classes being too easy or not unique in my opinion Is a mistake, If the content and gear was better it wouldn't even matter if the classes were just "sword guy with a bow and a little magic" the Classes are just a symptom of the main issue. Content is just plain boring. The Fate system is a trash system that never really helped socializing. Back in ARR when Fate Grinding was how everyone leveled and we all just partied up silently and bashed into fates all day it became painfully apparent how bad the system was and they've be using it non stop, It's a trash flawed system and they use it EVERYWHERE, I mean it's in Eureka and Bozja, and they even put a damn Fate in one of the large scale PVP maps.
Everything in the game has either a daily or a weekly cap. Do you wanna know what every piece of content in FFXIV feels like? It feels like reputation grinding in World of Warcraft, the entire game is just WoW's reputation grind. Story was literally all the game had. The villains were terrible in Yawntrail though, The characters had me rolling my eyes and skipping entire dialogue segments just to get it over with faster. But my complaints don't even seem to vibe with the normal complaints people have. People actually seem to want MORE boring bozja fates considering they whined about the last relic weapons being an uncapped tombstone grind which I preferred over more mindless fate grinding. I'm tired of the World of Warcraft reputation grind simulator. Everything is timed, everything is capped and it's all to get the most boring loot imaginable. Don't even get me started on "Le epic reddit/discord secret hunt club" making the Hunt system arguably worse than the Fate system.
As someone who played on and off since Heavensward. The cracks with formula where showing since then with the patch cycle. While story has been what keeps everyone around through the Hydalyn/Zodiark saga. Dawntrail broke the Camel's back and everyone is noticing it and slowly leaving from all the communities of the game. They didn't early on experiment with different types of endgame, unlike wow, which for years has changed up it's formula since Wrath. Why it's lasted 20 years. Because they try to see what works and doesn't such as the awful heart of Azeroth in BFA. Rewards for gearing feels weightless and big number just getting bigger. Classic wow has it's audience that keeps coming back, because of the design and rewards from how gear feels as an example for progression working. If FF was to have more endgame besides 4 raids and an alliance raid every other patch to keep people invested I could see it well. They need to make big changes of the games going to die off within the next decade.
I come from FFXI, and us FFXI veterans been complaining about this shit since HEAVENSWARD. It's only gotten worse with each expansion, and the only thing that's kept me playing up until Endwalker was my friends. Dawntrail was the point where I… just couldn't hold my nose anymore. Now I've got my friends hooked on FFXI to show them what they're missing in terms of class utility, combat mechanics, class fantasy, world and exploration… and on and on it goes.
Also, brilliant use of Peterson.
There's only cosmetic customization in FFXIV. Even that isn't the best.
Why can't I talent my Black Mage? Why aren't there cool gear options? Classic WoW, a game from 20 years ago has more interesting gear than FFXIV now.
110% agree with you. I fell in LOVE with the Hydalin x Zodiark, The Ascian/Ancients, and Gods/Mythos Storylines! However, FFXIV died for me with the end of Endwalker.
I despised the overall premise of Dawntrail being the “Vacation” Expansion, when other MMOs would have only made it one single Patch. I, like many, were disappointed in the “Viper” class being the most basic bland vanilla melee in all history, and “Pictomancer” being a thing when everyone was hoping for either Green Mage or Time Mage. Lastly, for the live if god, Woke Lamut is UNBEARABLE!! The story is subpar, boring, and predictable.
They don't even let you que crystal conflict with friends which would be the most ever green content they ever introduced… This is just not the game for people who like engaging group content. It is a solo player online rpg.
For me I stopped playing because first thing was the new race was very meh… I honestly was looking forward to a slender agile big cat lady but we got a mans broad shoulders chiseled jaw line.. and I was like this is crap… then new jobs were not what I liked and those two things were very minion honeslty but I'd play if the new race was interesting to look at, or classes were more interesting to me with ease of use..
But what truely killed this game was the story, it was such crap story telling compared to rest of the game it's like reading through or listening through an entirely new game which I was not used to and a style I absolutely hate, I like being The Hero, the center stage. And it's why I did not like GuildWars 2 or even WoW because you are not the hero even though you do everything and some other asshole takes credit for what you do.
dude says he raided yet he takes 2-3 gcs at the start of the pull to actually use any actual gcd oh boy and dude pulled with unmend without stance on LOL
way to farm outrage views there chief.
Looking at your profile on the lodestone (where you've hidden your achievements), I can see your minions and mounts still and they paint the story of someone who didn't really engage with the game on anything other than a surface level.
You don't even have the mount for completing the first variant dungeon.
I see some Bozja stuff, and you're got the DRN completetion mount, so you've done that at least once, but I don't see a demi-ozma, which means you've never cleared the Baldesion Arsenal, and probably haven't interacted with Eureka beyond Pagos (understandable, Pagos is terrible), but Eureka Pyros and Hydatos are excellent and add a lot of depth to the areas with the first iteration of Lost Actions. I don't see many extreme mounts either, not even the very easy to farm ones that can be gotten solo by the release of Endwalker.
I'm not saying you don't have valid points, but it also feels like there's more going on here.
Ive been playing 14 since 2.0 beta. I take breaks here and there because there are tons of other games to play, but I've barely played Dawntrail. I really really did not like it. I still like the game overall and will be back for every patch, but man DT feels bad. You can love a game despite its flaws but not liking the story of DT is hitting me hard. I dont raid, just engage in casual, midcore content. I love stuff like deep dungeons, Bozja and Eureka, and need more stuff like that. I love relic grinds. I just want more stuff to do.
Also, Id like to say that Lynx Kameli was a prick who wove actual good feedback amidst atrociously mean spirited comments and opinions, and Im glad he's gone.
Well, back to PoE2.
look, RR pretty much sucked but it set an unforgettable experience for me. Dawntrails not fun, I get it, but why would I quit after one set back after years of good times. Anyone saying to unsub was never a true fan of the game.
4:31 whats the video title for the video about gear being useless?
Wow pvp argument is unfair. They updated the jobs again and the fights are intense. The little ping is Better, not perfect yet tho. For me pvp is the only thing keeping me here.
in hindsight, DT seems like a glorified train that just brought in the frankly late graphics update and nothing more. it was a piss poor start to a new arc and makes blatant the wasted potential this game has always had for realized rpg mechanics. at 11:03 pepper says it best. this game needs a fundamental overhaul.
the boredom problem is so deeply woven into the games fabric that it'd probably take another terraflare from bahamut to fix at this point lmfao.
From what I'm hearing and seeing, 7.0 is basically a filler expac with as few risks taken as possible, and a lot of effort is already going into 8.0. The game can definitely be saved, and the devs seemingly understand that they've painted themselves into a corner over time, so I'm not gonna go doom-and-gloom just yet – gonna wait till 8.0.
After all, it took Blizzard almost ten years to unfuck their game (everything from start of WoD to end of SL was exhibiting major problems that just grew more prominent over time, Legion's design was as bad as BfA, most people just didn't see it because they were blinded by "content" which actually amounted to farming artifact power endlessly, and SL was even worse), but right now they seem to be doing alright, going back to basic systems of "level up, get gear, have fun" that brought them so much success back in the day. I think FFXIV can also turn things around and improve.
So raiding is bad because the rooms are circles/squares and you have to memorize mechanics?
FFXIV right now is by far the best raiding mmo. Ultimates are unique, fun and fast paced, you don't need to grind for 3 weeks just to be able to raid and there's a reason why no new mmo is trying to copy WoW's outdated raid design. It's just a gear check, every boss turns into a joke regardless of mechanics as long as you have the gear.
The mechanics in FFXIV also affect everyone, unlike a lot of WoW ones where it's just rng and a lot of players someones just get to ignore them if they aren't targeted which makes some encounters kinda boring. The only good things about WoW raids is the length of progression and the fact that the bosses do a really good job at creating situations that make the classes and abilities shine.
It's sad to see that WoW players are stuck with this mentaIity of "if it's not WoW, it's bad" as if WoW is this perfect flawless game that does everything right when in reality it's just comfort and nostalgia. Talents aren't an objectively good thing or a requirement, same with unique gear or boss rooms. Raiding doesn't need any of that to be good and FFXIV has proven that for many years.
The combat in WoW isn't even passable anymore, the gcds are so fast the servers can't handle it and they rubberband/desync to the point where calling it "playable" is being generous. Even world first raiders are affected by this and Blizzard hasn't made any attempts at fixing it because it doesn't really impact anyone who has been playing the game for over a decade as they're way too used to the game to care or even notice at this point. The balance is terrible and the constant changes to classes have also made some of them worse like with arcane mage, the class that lost everything that made it unique.
The things they complain about aren't necessarily bad and the alternative is also flawed.
It honestly feels like this is two expansions pushed together into a bad one. The pacing was absolutely horrible, the characters are so underdeveloped and if you think about it the story doesn't make sense. Its disappointing and sad.
1 savage tier dude? PF sucks a lot, but 1 tier? I at least stopped after like 6y of every tier… i hate that ultimate is gatekept
Crit dungeon was too hard in general for no reward
DT didnt expose anything. Weve been getting less since shb
Also yes, everyone is a dps and it should be
No way stfu dude. You lost points shitting on stb. StB is actually better written than HW and StB has the best CHARACTER ROSTER (HW is second)
DT story isn't bad at all. Its actually good. The issue is WUK LAMANT. Its just her
We dont need harder jobs. People can't play them so the toxic elitist can stop (even though im in there)
We do need more content and 4 months rather than 3 with less rewards and less content? Glamour is lackluster and embarrassing especially with a trash character creator.
People are so stupid.. Dawntrail isn't as exciting as say Shadowbringers or Endwalker but Dawntrail is the A realm reborn story wise and that wasn't fun either. It's a new Era, new beginning and it needs a foundation, something to build upon, so yes it will be stale and boring until stuff ramps up which it already is. Aside from story it's exactly were it should be minus some balance changes like the fact Pictomancer needs nerfs.
The fact that people compare to lame wow is so stupid. I pray Ff never has anything similar to wow cause everything about that game is bad. It's aged, boring, lazy. Blizzard will never fix it or listen to their player base. They're too busy releasing Mercy skins to save their asses from sinking completely.
Please do not fill people's heads with bs. Ff is doing fine if you don't like it just quit and leave it alone.
At the end of the day all of this are opinions. One person dislikes it and another one likes it.
I for myself like the story of Dawntrail and I don't understand the criticism. Of course it is slow and "boring" in comparison with the older add ons. But from a story perspective – it's fitting.
Damn we saved the whole universe you can't expect the story to jump right into the next world threatening danger.
If you just compare ARR and DT with their stories… I think they're quite similar. Slow start, worldbuilding and toned down in the action since it is just the beginning for something new.
Some of the other points I can understand and even agree with them. It's not perfect but nothing is perfect. Even another game you call great or awesome is not perfect.
So I keep my view that videos like this are just opinions and don't speak for everyone. They never will and thats okay. Everyone is entitled to an opinion but no one should be attacked if theirs doesn't match with your own.
If you don't like the game anymore: it's okay. Find something else and have fun! 😊
Look at gameplay for FFXIV Mobile by Tencent. IMO the writing is on the wall for FFXIV PC/PlayStation version at this point. The game has continually been shifted to simplification so that it can be ported over. Even Yoshi P mentioned something to that effect in a video interview.
I started around feb-march 2023 back when my main MMO is a mobile game called Toram Online (In which this MMO is inspiring from FFXIV). What I fell love on this game is that the story is amazing especially when I stepped in for the first time in Shadowbringers. Endwalker is also running up for me with how they close up a chapter with the main Hydaelyn and Zodiark. And then when I finished Endwalker where Dawntrail is still on its way for released, I dip into Savage raiding and also loved the fact its not as boring as having a good gear and kill the boss in 10 seconds which Toram Online has that gives me the frustration of people just wanting to kill boss in that timeframe or you out, no engagement on boss, just mindless kill in contrast to Savage that you need 8 competent people to do mechanics and clear the fight. Now in Dawntrail, I do get some people don't like the story much, I been trained into believing story is irrelevant in MMOs I play so I able to ignore the bad in Dawntrail's story and fully enjoy the up in difficulty in normal content. Personally, I dont really like or hate the story of Dawntrail as I am still believing that it still chapter 1 of an arc in which we not getting to climax yet (Example for me is ARR is the Intro, Heavensward is Rising Action, Stormblood being Filler, Shadowbringer being Climax and Endwalker being the Falling Action and the End of an arc).
In pertaining to gears, yeah I do get it. Gears in this game is same old get the better stats and you good. In contrast to lets say this Mobile MMO Toram Online which does the gearing kinda same with FFXIV but you can customize the stats if its crafted gear.
Jobs? agreed, they try to make your transition from one job to another easier by homogenizing. Well for me at least It made easier for me to transition from job to job but the Identity, yeah It may cause Job to lose it especially when you specialize in a job for the first time and known it on that state then change it (Yoshi P, why you let them decrease nastrond to 1? I readied myself with the button press as its interesting, why decrease it?).
Overall, while I open that FFXIV is in decline state due to repetitive formulas especially if you are a veteran of the game (Which I felt with the Mobile MMO I mentioned) but for now, I still quite ok with the formula as its not wearing me down… yet.
I still playing the game but I do notice that me also came from BRRR play FFXIV all day to just do what I want only in which what Yoshi P wants and I respect that. My friend also does the same. I just more active as I practically do quite a chunk of the content in the game (Story, Raids, Crafting and Gathering. Soon I maybe tackle PoD, Eureka and Bozja).
(Bout to have a boring rant so sorry in advance if you read this)
When it comes down to MMOs i've always been a more on and off again person i mainly played 4 MMOs in question 2 old and 1 "new" everquest (live), FFXI, WOW, and anytime i try to get back into FFXIV to try to get more of a taste of its gameplay or try to get into some of its content i never got passed Stormblood because its gameplay just wasent it. i had friends that always preached saying "it gets good after (insert their fav expansion pack here) but each time i try i just can't flow with its gameplay. for the lack of a better term its just too "simplistic and boring" nothing really interesting going on when it comes down to it do your 1-2-3 combo and wait for your burst window thats all there really is to talk about but then again i didn't get and it didnt look like it changes much later on when looking at endgame content.
in everquest each class feels diffrent in its spells and abilities but overall have the same agenda "make target dead" but inside and outside of combat each class can have some fun, some classes can fly some can animate pets and the dead (and even give those said pets equipment) some classes can just MELT enemies but each class feels fun in its own way
FFXI i've had the most time with (2 years as of making this) and i have had a more on and off again relation ship with but has the most unique and fun job and equipment system out of all of my examples being able to mix and match jobs with the subjob system and experiment with what you want to play. SURE those class combinations are not always the best but the option is there (i wanted to try SMN/DNC so much for some reason because i can hit mobs with dual clubs) and there is gear to support that niche playstyle. I've mainly been taking a break because its kinda time consuming even more then most other mmos.
WOW im more new too compared to the other 2 examples but even retail has a more fun and more out there focused gameplay loop with each of its classes and specs to make them feel more fun and enjoyable i LOVE enha shaman because i can bash mobs with 2 maces embued with elemental power and fully heal myself (its basically warcrafts version of a RDM when you think about it). I've nowadays been playing SOD and its the some of the most fun i've had with an MMO and allows be to experiment more with my spec EVEN MORE currently lvling a PLD for naxx and its been really fun so far.
and then there's FFXIV. as said before its mainly "do your 1-2-3 combo and wait for your burst window" and i can't really add much to it each class has a gimmick but its just a slightly modified version of another classes gimmick, that doesn't make it feel fun its just more of the same old 1-2-3 build resource and wait for burst thats been the whole game.
in FFXI my NIN can be a Tank, melee DPS or a pure MAG DPS or even a healer if needed (tho that may take some work) it allows me to mess around a bit more and have some creative fun.
in FFXIV its mainly 1-2-3 build resource 1-2-3 build resource and more 1-2-3 build resource until burst BUT ATLEAST IT HAS NINJUSTU COMBOS AM I RIGHT.
i keep thinking to myself maybe i should go back and give it more time but i just can't.. but maybe ill come back
i could go on even more but this is too long as is you got the point its too simplistic for me.
thanks for reading my slightly lifeless nerd rant about a game.
(if you read this thanks and tell me what you think if not and you skipped to the end thats understandable).
Encounter design is FFXIV strength. It's just not as popular as MSQ in the community.
Saying FF raid design isn't a strong point is insanely dishonest.
The only people who still play are the two extreme groups of players. The Gposing modders who dont even play the game and the people who have 150 DSR totems sitting in their inventory while living their lifes away in PF. FFXIV is truly on its way out. For many many reasons.
One thing you're wrong about though is about sandbox MMOs. They're absolutly trash. GW2 proves you can have a great and alive open world in a theme park MMO without forcing artificial social hierarchy system on the entire playerbase which sandbox MMO always create after a while. AOC literally caters to the worst type of players in the world….Classic WoW andies. Yikes.
I'm still playing but that's because I still have older content I haven't done yet. Afterwards though I'm quitting like I did for EW patches for about 2 years. 😂 The only way to make big companies change is to make them lose money.
At this stage i exclusively play FF14 for the hard content (just cleared TOP Ultimate with my buddies) On that note there is enough stuff for me to look forward to: hard 24-man raids, new criterion dungeons (with hopefully better rewards tho i liked the aloalo weapons specifically) next savage tier… but im totally with you ok story having taken a big nosedive… i went from eating up every bit of story i could get up to endwalker to not giving a shit and skipping stuff in dawntrail.
Square really needs to put their money where their worth is. Quality of this game has been quite a bit complacent… especially in regards to their shadowbringer/endwalker success.
