I will never understand the trope of sparing the great Satan of the story, especially in anime.
In anime, villains do more than rob a bank or say a mean word or two. Anime villains can murder millions, rape and torture protagonists, burn everything to the ground and all the while laughing maniacally while doing it. But, when the protagonist finally has a gun up to the villain's head, rightfully enraged by all that this monster has done, so fucking mad he's shaking, his teeth are clenched and bleeding, while tears roll down from his eyes, ALL OF THE SUDDEN, FOR WHATEVER STUPID REASON… "*sigh*, I can't do it."
I hate that fucking trope more than Life itself. It's either drama JUST for the sake of it, the story is being artificially prolonged, or the author just has very questionable morals. I really have to question whether these people would do the same in real life. "Yeah, you raped my wife, killed my children, and kicked my puppy while you had me tied up and made me watch for days on end… but, *sigh*, I just can't bring myself to kill you and thus protect others from you. If I do that, I'd be just as bad as you. *sigh*"
Anime isn't even the only medium to use this trope either. Steven Universe from what I heard had something kind of like that. Steven apparently walked up to White Diamond, after enslaving countless gem-people and destroying entire planets, was like "LET'S BE FRIENDS!" and White Diamond was like "OH, OKAY! HAHAHA! I'M NO LONGER EVIL! LOVE WINS YAY!"
