Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail Review

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail reviewed by Michael Higham on PC, also available on PlayStation and Xbox.

Dawntrail has some growing pains and notable lulls as it establishes a new era for Final Fantasy XIV, but the compelling cultures of Tural are strong enough to carry you to its greater moments – it’s also nice to see real-world influences near and dear to me represented so well. Once the main story flips the switch and shows you what it’s really about, it hits the kinds of peaks we’ve seen from the MMO time and time again. Dawntrail had me stunned by spectacular combat encounters, but more importantly left me floored with a unique sense of self-reflection. It doesn’t forget that this is a Final Fantasy story, and the way it ties in its past, present, and future makes for incredible moments that continue to define the series. Dawntrail is a worthy extension of FFXIV, and it leaves a world of fascinating possibilities for what’s next.

  1. Yoshi-P deserves his flowers. FF16 left me speechless and legitimately introspective for days. That, along the work he continues to do on FF14 has to mean something. In my book, he enters the pantheon of great ones alongside Sakaguchi, Yu Suzuki, Miyamoto, Kojima, et al.

  2. Honestly, it's the weakest expansion so far. The story has pacing issues and just lacks the compelling characters previous expansions had. The new boss mechanics and classes though easily make up for it's shortcomings, Viper has been the most fun I've had playing a class in an mmorpg in a long long time.

  3. Worst story to ever date for ff14 and one of the worst I've experienced. Their writers for this expansion need to be fired for this one lol it was just "do you remember" the expansion and just referencing everything that's happened previously and riding on it's coattails instead of having a unique separating story.
