Final Fantasy XIV is quite the mmorpg, and Endwalker is throwing me for a loop. Bunnies? Carrots? What’s going on?

More about Final Fantasy 14:
“Final Fantasy XIV[b] is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for Microsoft Windows personal computers, developed and published by Square Enix in 2010. It is the fourteenth entry in the main Final Fantasy series and the second MMORPG in the series after Final Fantasy XI. Set in the fantasy realm of Eorzea, players take control of a customized avatar as they explore the land and are caught up in both an invasion by the hostile Garlean Empire and the threat of the Primals, the deities of the land’s Beastmen tribes. Eventually, they are embroiled in a plot by a Garlean Legatus to destroy the Primals by bringing one of the planet’s moons down on Eorzea.
Final Fantasy XIV takes place in a high fantasy setting. The main location is Eorzea, a continent on the larger planet Hydaelyn: this contrasts Final Fantasy XI which uses one name to refer to the entire world and its regions. Eorzea is broken up among three main powers: the forest nation of Gridania; the desert-based Ul’dah sultanate; and the thalassocracy of Limsa Lominsa, Eorzea’s dominant maritime power. Other important locations include the scholarly city-state of Sharlayan and the Garlean Empire, a hostile northern power with highly developed technology. Five years prior to the start of the game, the Garlean Empire invaded the land of Ala Mhigo, but were prevented from conquering Eorzea by the attacks of the ancient dragon Midgardsomr and his dragon hordes. In response to the Empire’s threat, the three nations of Eorzea reform the Grand Companies, comprehensive centers of command which combine the cities’ military and economic assets. The Grand Companies attracted people from all walks of life, who take up the mantle of Adventurers.”

How did no one mention the whole Ilsabard Contingent making HW and SB relevant?
From my oldest son. i don't like the term "filler" content, because filler means it's literally there just to pad out the time and accomplish nothing. but if you were to cut heavensward and stormblood out of the story, you wouldn't get:
– the ishgardian knights helping to drive back the garleans at the end of shadowbringers
– any idea who the warriors of darkness from the first were
– midgardsormr traveling with us
– the first time you see the mothercrystal
– to see what happened to minfilia, and why she's suddenly the voice of hydaelyn
– an explanation for why there are monsters living in the void
– your first time seeing Ga Bu, the first kobold you cure of primal tempering!
– you wouldn't meet zenos or know who he is at ALL
– you wouldn't meet Yotsuyu's brother and wouldn't know who Fandaniel is possessing
– the ala mhigo conflict never gets an ending (the warrior of light would be content with letting a civilization stay enslaved by garleans?)
– you wouldn't see that the garleans are giving people the Echo through science
– no resolution for Raubahn, he's just the angry guy who lost his arm for nothing
– the WoL never gets the enchantment that lets them breathe underwater, and neither does Alisae
– you never meet the "Shadowhunter" (Gaius)
– Gaius and Estinien never storm the Garlean capital and therefore never sabotage their chemical weapon before they can use it
– you never drive back the garleans from trying to invade Othard.
Depending on how much you know of the series prior to playing FF14, the game can serve as a gateway to childhood memories. Such as hearing a simple melody from an older title brought back to FF14. Perhaps this is why FF14 players can be so defensive if any naysayers criticize the game.
IMO, Stormblood is a great experience to break away from the greater bigger story that is the Hydaelan/Zodiark story. It didn't add much to the overarching plot, but it was a great way to break the same ol same ol we've been doing in Heavenswards.
In HW, we been doing the same thing we did in ARR, so SB was more of a "world building" expansion than anything else, which is probably why not many people like SB, on top of trying to top what happened in HW while SB had a very slow startup.
SB was a way to allow the writers to build upon the world of XIV, rather than progress the plot of XIV, why characters from SB aren't as prominent, UNLESS you did quests related TO SB characters and their part of the world.
IMO, ShB is epic, but felt more filler, in the sense that, everything on the Source, needs a pause, while the character needed a "powerup" in a sense of understanding the plot of Hydaelan/Zodiark so when we DO come back to the Source, aka Endwalker, we can wrap up the H/Z Plot.
By themselves, each Expansion had their own flair, but put together, it creates the H/Z Plot. Personally, someone that likes to write about stories, this was the best approach, as plots needs a somewhat "filler" in that the characters involved needs some context to explore on a bit more personal level, rather than shoving it to the main story and let the audience/readers feel overwhelmed and exhausted.
If we did the same thing all the way to EW, the players probably would have gotten tired and go "oh, we have to do this again for the umpteenth time", and I sense that the writers were feeling this way as well, so we need to step away from what we were doing. That's why, one of the best part in SB is when you have to return the Kojin Relic back to its place, and then BOOM… insert meme "Here we go again!" xD xP and go "remember why we exist for?" lol and that was the latter half of SB, which is a great pull and push effect into keeping the player engaged… for the few that liked SB that is. xD
It's neat how the music kicks in and just makes you remember. Went from 'wth bunnies' to nostalgia quick.
Stormblood was absolutely relevant. Without Ala Mhigo and the Far East, there would be no Isalbard Contingent, as it is now. Also, Shadowbringers would not have happened without Omega raid, which is obviously very relevant now. It may not have been MSQ and required, but the fruits from that were born through Shadowbringers and the Crystal Tower. Sticking the Garlean plight in Heavensward or Shadowbringers would have overloaded either one. Sure, that in essence might be an opinion, but so is Stormblood isn't relevant. You can only fit so much content into an expansion. Even with great writing, it would've either felt rushed or other MSQ elements would have needed to be cut in order to add Garlean or Fandaniel points to the story.
I think that it's not that SB is not relevant but it feels not relevant because playing it didn't feel much more worth it than if it was just told through exposition.
Like if when you got to Ala mhigo you have already been introduced to Zenos and had the respective encounters with him in HW and they had already done all the work and what was left was just beat Zenos… it wouldn't make a huge difference to us not having visited Doma or the steppe.
Excuse the total mess with the past time conjugation, not native and I'm still learning.
Storm blood has expanded the world where you come from. It gave some more space and world building. So, less mean whiles is pretty good
