FFXIV: Why Sharlayan wishes to remain Neutral – Lore Theory

Sharlayan is both a powerful and intelligent ally to have in your corner, except they never choose a corner!
Here is my theory about why they will wish to remain neutral, even as the world burns around them.

I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video!
My channel is focused on player perspective content, gameplay, theory’s and importantly game lore for Final Fantasy XIV.
I recently passed the year mark of my video content. Videos that meant to bring a smile to a viewers face or provide them with even one piece of useful and informative information.

I will continue to do so, for I have developed a love for these videos I create, and I will work hard to make them better for you.

  1. The reason the audio is different is I was testing out a Zoom recorder I borrowed to see what it was like 🙂
Nice but a bit of an echo.

Hope you enjoyed this latest video!

  2. Oh wow! I had a huge argument with someone over Faurchenault and Sharlayan!

But yeah I think you're right. Definitely paralellea between Sharlayan amd Alexandria. While I understand neutrality in war from their standpoint, given they are not a nation of warriors, I don't agree with neutrality when faced with absolute destruction. Even if it's just knowledge you can give to help. To do nothing is foolish and careless.

    Great video!

  3. I believe the crystal on Graha's staff is a piece of the actual crystal tower, and he is still technically connected to the tower so my guess is he probably uses the crystal to let him teleport into the forbidden library areas.

*EDIT* Here's my theory about Sharlayan.

Their architecture is very similar to Aumarout, and much of what they know is kept hidden. There's a current theory floating around that Venat made Sharlayan her home, but I don't think that's the case. What I think happened instead is that someone discovered the wreckage of Aumarout on the Source, and somehow some of its tomes remained partially intact…and because they discovered it, they came to the conclusion that it must mean they are destined to be the protectors of this knowledge and have based their entire society on this wrongful interpretation. I mean, the fact that Daddy Dearest over here didn't even acknowledge us as Hydaelyn's chosen or the WoL speaks volumes.

  4. The parallel was drawn as early as Heavensward with the Great Gubal Library. Think of Sharlayan, think of books, think of Scholars and their hooks.

But now that Fourchenault has handed out Sharlayan's suspicious stance familiar though it may be… well it makes me think that Sharlayan's face to the world is a lie. Their value for knowledge is true, don't get me wrong, but it's a means to an end. Wild Supposition incoming!

I am of the mind that the ark story with Nyunkrepft's Ark is only partially true, maybe even an outright lie. I think that the Sharlayans have knowledge of and ties to Amaurot's sister city from ancient times (and likely Hydaelyn's faction due to this). I think it's entirely possible that Sharlayan has technology beyond Allag, having had access and knowledge of all that Allag had for millennia. The shining example is the Sage's Noulith weapon. I think that in the depths of Old Sharlayan, in the bowels of that new area, Labyrinthos, they have a fairly dark secret. I'm torn between that secret being having direct access to Hydaelyn who they mistreat with big tech OR they knew/know what Rejoinings are and do, and are entirely prepared to entomb their society there to await fully rejoined status and then dominate the world to usher in utopia.

Basically I think they with hold from helping even now, because they are ultimately one step down from neutral. A neutral evil, so to speak. I think we will have a dungeon there around the level 87 portion of the MSQ, and they will serve as one faction of antagonists in the latter half of Endwalker. At first they will be what they claim to be now, but when we dig up their secrets and start airing them out… well, well, well.

I truly can't wait to punch Fourchenault in the jaw. He deserves no less.

  5. I remeber the qoute from the character estinien when he was invited to fight for the scions, which is one of the best and deepst scene in the series in my opinion and provides a good perspective in the argument between the sicons and the sharlyan. He said to the sicons: " you see the world the way you want it to be, I see the world the way it is. But i know you would never turn your back on those in need. never close eyes on their suffering. And somehow, your deeds lend truth to your words. i see other so draw strength from your beliefs, you inspired them to standup and fight, to win, no less. And even when you lost those you held dear, you carries their spritis with you, and made their memories your guiding light. the burden of so many hopes and dreams would be too heavy for most to bear, but you bear it willingly. As you have shown me, some dreams are too important to let go. If you need my strength, its yours. After all you have done, how can i refuse? " This explains the sicons persepecive well in that while there are suffering in the world and it is not “without reason”, there are still those who stand in definance of it even if it is not without reason.
