I love the fact that FF14 is a rpg first then a mmo. I get an enjoyable story and can do dungeons with my friends 🙂
If I were Arekkz I’d just make a new character and start over. They removed most of the filler before Heavensward and mega buffed exp gains so it won’t take long to redo the story. Each job’s kit and even basic combat design has changed a lot since he played so starting from scratch isn’t a bad idea at all
My advice: stick to the MSQ only for ARR and Heavensward. There is so much content that it can be overwhelming. Play the game as if it's a regular RPG, not an MMO. I played the original beta and wrecked myself, but recently, I started a new character, got an FC, and it's been a blast. I think the two main things to focus on are: finding a class you like and do the MSQ. You can swap classes at anytime, so there's no pressure to be locked in.
I was in a similar place before. But lately I wanted to play a chill game with good story and I tried FFXIV again. It finally clicked and joined a Free company (guild) and it made playing the game better. Being able to play different classes in a single character is a plus for me, I'm tired of mmo's that makes you replay the story for trying out new class.
Where are my legacy players at? We've come so far. From the very start with it being universally hated to now heading into the third chapter of the game's life being universally loved.
Jesse Cox actually makes a fantastic video describing the game and how it should be viewed if anyone thinks of it like WoW styled MMOs, "15 Years of WoW vs 1 Year of FFXIV" the key point being that it should be viewed as an RPGMMO and not an MMORPG. The RPG aspect is the main focus whereas the MMO aspect should be secondary. In other games this is usually reversed where the MMO is the core aspect and the RPG aspects are very lackluster which leads to a lot of disengagement to the game itself and you just play it for the sake of playing a game.
If your end up liking other jobs, use the side quests to level up those classes.
I've tried twice and keep fading out around the same spot. Having to go back to Minfilia after every MSQ with no teleporter to the town. It just gets tedious and boring
More than advice i can give you something to think about, FFXIV is not ARR, the game has evolved and has become much more than what the initial setup arc could ever convey, story telling, encounter design, visual spectacle everything gets better and better as time goes on and is understandable that the first part of it can or will be worse than whats to come later, but if you skip or try to rush it you will only feel overwhelmed and confused about everything around
Get ready ti cry from time to time! But "TAKE YOUR TIME!" Please don't rush and just ask around! We'll out ya out~ Where are going bad asshats around….. That's just life!
If you do jump back to your old character, you can watch old cutscenes in an inn
Just don't skip story and take your time. Trying to rush through the game just to get to endwalker is the wrong way to play. Do what you want. Do sidequests, do the raids, do the content you want
If you are looking to get just the story at the very least do the Binding Coil of Bahamut raids and Omega raids as Ishikawa, the writer of the main story of Endwalker, said they are incredibly important to the story
What is this O_o
My personal advice, as someone who was nearly thrown off by the game's kind of subpar voiceovers during ARR: try out the Japanese audio. A huge proponent of my waning attention to the cutscenes early on were because of the english casting. I'm adamant that from Heavensward and onwards, the new English casting were a huge step-up from ARR, but I still hold that having Japanese voices for ARR helped retain my attention to the story until it finally picked up
i'd like to return to ff14 one day too, i'm just a bit nervous about doing it without any friends XD
My advice if you want to stick with the job you already have leveled go find a target dummy and put a little practice in you can find them all over the place to get used to your rotation again, if you want to try out another job don't be afraid to give it a try i just got done getting all jobs to 80 and honestly they're all fun to play. Main story quest and job quest should be the top priority but don't burn yourself out there's a lot and I mean a lot of content in this game for everyone to enjoy if you want a break from msq. I will say though knowing you once you get to heavensward the story I'm sure will hook you knights, dragons all that good stuff. And the number one thing to remember this isn't WOW one thing the devs have said themselves ff14 is a single player rpg first and a mmo second enjoy the story and the world and the rest will fall into place!
Waiting for Vierra to drop then I'll join FFXIV again🥲
1) Tanking is in a good place right now; some of the things people worry about such as aggro and mitigating has been streamlined. I'd say read the tooltips for your actions and take your time with it.
2) With regards to skip or no skip, either isn't wrong but keep in mind if you skip to take a look at the new actions you get and how to use them. You don't have to worry about not being able to play with your friends because they can still sync down and go through dungeons at the level you're at, and all the content will still stick around so fomo isn't a problem.
3) I'd suggest to continue with the story as is for now, searching up things that don't make sense, then when you're done or when you get curious to check out the book at the inn or to do new game plus if you want to fully experience each quest. Take things at your own pace and explore what interests you.
4) Do the MSQ quest first (the ones with the meteor like icons) and unlock any quests that are blue because they're more content you can dip into. Do your job quests when they pop up because asides from the story you'll also unlock important skills and actions.
5) If you absolutely LOVE raids, come on in. The great thing about FF14 is that you can always go back to Extreme Trials, Savage Raids and Ultimates as it was when it first released. The level sync system in FF14 is great. And if you do get into raiding, there are resources out there you can use to learn such as the Balance, Akh Morning, SaltedXIV etc etc. Explore whichever content catches your eyes!
Love your MonHun vids! SnS best weap btw
I also get into ffxiv like 2 month ago, it just never click to me until last 2 month, the register at my place is confusing since i cant download it from steam, monthly subs turn me off, and my pc is old af, cant rlt play games on it. But since i built new PC, i saw a netflix show which featured dad and son playing FFXIV together. It make me curious and i remember last year my highschool friend ask me if i want to try FFXIV since the trial time rn it indefinite, with all ARR and HW expansion and limit lvl 60 with mostly all of content without social experience like fc or tell. Last year i didnt get interested cuz subs, b2p and my pc suck, but now i have more stable income, have lot better pc (not best but usable with 1650S), and the netflix series encourage me to try. I tried it, registering has some kind of issue, but i able to register trial with NA account, download the game and play thru ARR. I had so much fun, the story, the job, the world, the music, Everything! I like good mmo, lot better than i expected, after few weeks i decide i will buy it, even monthly sub would be worth it. Well i havent buy it tbh since MHR PC is so close and i also really want to buy it. Hope you enjoy the game Arekz! See ya in Eorzea!!
Another thing to get hyped about is the MHW crossover in FFXIV, which is the main original reason I decided to pick up FFXIV as a long time MH fan
" Im not new to ff14, i just skipped all the dialog and cutscences"
Yea….your new bro 😆
I take extended breaks from FFXIV pretty regularly. At times it lasted over a year. So by the time I get back I'm very rusty and don't remember how to play that well.
The best thing to do to get back into the groove I find is just to stick to the solo story content for awhile. Assuming you didn't leave like right before doing a story dungeon you'll have some time to ease way into the game again before having to do a dungeon. If you still feel like you're not ready when the story wants you to run a dungeon then queue up for an easy low level dungeon to practice. As a tank you'll able to queue for basically any dungeon in no time.
Most of the mandatory story dungeons aren't super difficult though, so you don't need to worry about optimal play.
The only thing keeping me from playing more FFXIV is the sub fee. I have a lvl 41 Bard that I've been chipping away at every now and then for years, since before the trial. But if I want to take advantage of the trial, which as you know allows play through Heavensward and lvl 60, I have to make a whole new account and lose ~80 hours that I spent on my first character. If they just tied the perks of subbing to the actual sub and not to the specific account I'd be back immediately. But right now I'm just too casual to justify the sub cost. Sincerely hope they reassess this eventually, but I'm not holding my breath.
Learn to take breaks with FF14. Pick up a good roguelite to play every few days to help keep your enjoyment fresh.
Waiting for End walker so I can skip shadowbringers
It’s so difficult to define the right way to play this game. It’s such a dynamic experience with so many different things to do! Personally, as a somewhat seasoned player, I believe balance is truly the key to thoroughly enjoying this game. This way, you can avoid burnout or any unnecessary contempt, and absorb what the story has to offer in more digestible segments. If you really want to catch up on content, FOCUS MSQ (Main Story Quest)! But, be aware of your class level. Every MSQ has a level so you won’t be able to do it unless you’re at their respective levels. But, quite often, players find themselves grinding out the story in one of the Jobs they’ve already maxed (wasting all that juicy XP)! I’ve been guilty of that as well! More-so on balance, if you are advancing the story in a class that is in a similar level of the MSQ, then you’ll naturally find that Job quests (quests that advance your class/Job) will become available. With nearly all Jobs, Job Quests are available every 5 levels! These are very important as they typically unlock and advance Job skills. So, you can do these whenever you get to their respective levels as well. Rurikhan also mentioned that some of the side content is completely useless (yellow exclamation icons) … and he is completely right! The only side content that will ever truly matter are BLUE EXCLAMATION ICONS. These quests indicate LOCKED CONTENT. Meaning, once completed, you will unlock an important new mechanic (such as customizing your character), dungeon, map, or even Job!
I hope this helped with the more basic aspects of the game and the typical order of operations! MSQ >>> Job >>> Blue is typically how it goes. However, the key word here is typically! It all depends on what you are wanting from this experience! 🙂
If I forgot anything, please add! Goodluck Arekkz!
For me I am running two characters. My mistake was listening to my Cousin and lvl skipped my character I restarted with a n my PS4 and missed the whole story but I got my beta character back from my PS3 and have picked up from where I left of on him and I'm enjoying the story more with him since I get to see everything from the beginning.
If the last time you played was ARR, I’d say restart. Otherwise, do your best to play it as a single player game and try not to skip over or gloss over cutscenes and dialogue. Allow yourself to get distracted, but try not to get too distracted until you’re at least like 45-50. At that point the story should be starting to get you, so it won’t be hard to go back if you get distracted.
I also just started playing again. I just finish ARR and currently am in Heavensward. This video pretty much covers what I went through as I started playing again. I'm taking my time to play through the expansion. I think the best tip was not to rush the expansion that way you don't burn out.
I'd start over at this point, not only because it'll be a story refresher but because ARR was streamlined. Do not skip the story and do not try to rush to endgame. Enjoy the journey at your own pace!
Even though it can take some time, if you find your "Main Job" getting a bit stale, its VERY worth it to go and learn another Job for a bit.
SInce you can do every Job on 1 Character, learning another Job can help you learn what the limits are of that Job, and how to kind of make your Main Job better sync with others. Plus it can just be a fun change of pace.
FFXIV is an RPGMMO, not an MMORPG.
The story is one of the best stories in gaming.
