YOOO mad respect for what they did with this game, and with how they were having the world mechanically fall apart by the end
Thanks for this! I'm a FF14 player, but only since 4.0 (Stormblood Expansion). I've only managed to piece fragments of the 1.0 story together from word-of-mouth passed on by old players, and in-game lore. I really started geeking out when I learned that some quest dialogue and landmarks actually reference things players did before the servers went dark.
I am seriously considering playing FFIV. Long time WoW streamer and all around great content creator Preach Gaming has been going in on it and I hold his opinion on MMO's in very high regard. He's come away singing its praises so loudly he almost sounds like he's being paid, but I know he isn't. The recreation of the game in Realm Reborn also deserves all the reward it can get. How many great concepts have been abandoned from a shoddy initial execution? Evolve? Cyberpunk?
This is so cool, it really reminds me of a DND game with how much the devs were able to change things in the game in real time. I don't think I've ever seen a video game do something like that. I hope the 1.0 players were able to enjoy it, even if the rest of the game was kind of a hot mess.
It's frankly amazing that they didn't just kill the 1.0 version and try again, which is risky enough, but that used the bones of the failed version as the foundation of the reboots world. Most publishers would have just pull the plug and walked away but SE (who I'm sure have their own internal problems; all publishers in the game industry seem to we're learning) actually doubled down and committed to re-releasing a better version and that's worth some respect. Now all we need is a reboot of 12 with Ashelia as the main character she is clearly meant to be.
Despite the quality of the 1.0 version this makes me kinda sad i missed it. I bet it was one hell of an experience
man I saw the realm reborn trailer a lot when I started playing a while back but it makes it so much more impactful with that build up.
Sounds like quite the way to recover form a dud game.
glad to see you covering ff14, as member of one the great goobue wall this brings back memories
Very eager to see how this series shapes out.
If the summoning ritual succeeded: "Greetings, mortals! Why have you sum-IS THAT THE USDAMMNED MOON?!"
Gotta say, I wasn't super hyped about this, since I'm not an MMO or FF guy, but this looks like it'll be a fun experience! Quick note: When you make a comparison when trying to describe something, could you also use another game aside from past FF ones? Like I said, I'm not an FF player, so your callbacks to XII and VII aren't that helpful, and I'm sure there's others in my shoes.
The FFXIV method is such a wonderful approach to rebooting your game. Of course, you'd hope that the game didn't have to do that in the first place, but if you need to level your project and start from scratch, this is the way to do it!
What a great and concise explanation of pre-ARR!! Also wow I never knew the 1.0 players watched that meteor shower right before gaining the Echo that’s… my mind is connecting some dots already
Excited to see it
That's the best way to shut down an MMO.
This was a really interesting summary. Thank you!
Wow major kudos the developers for that transition, not only did continue to support a broken game for loyal fans but they got rewarded with a narratively satisfying way to introduce the new version 10/10
I'm so excited for this playthru!!
Consider me impressed and engaged!
Aaaah! I’m currently doing a play through on an alt in preparation for Endwalker so this is super exciting. To say I cannot wait to see the first episode tomorrow is an understatement
ohhh no. look what you've done. you've got me invested!! in an MMO!!!
+1
"This is unsalvageable" is what a lead developer looking at pretty much anyone's code would say, so I'm not surprised.
Awesome
Damn, Dan.
I have never cared for the FF franchise. But this intro got me stoked (o:
LET'S GOOOOOO
So basically, the game sucked so bad the devs decided to nuke it from orbit (literally) by bringing down an entire moon before releasing the version rebuilt from scratch.
Fantastic work as always, Dan~
Hard to think I might feel nostalgia for 1.0 again, it was pretty bad… Trust me when I say we're in a better time now though, truly.
1.0 was really, truly awful. I tried to enjoy it, I really did, but there was no MSQ to level you through the game, levequest limits were very strict, and the game world was filled with bland, endlessly repeating corridors of the same textures. Class mechanics were awful as well, you spent most of your time as a DoW auto-attacking and doing nothing else while waiting for your TP, which you needed to use abilities, to regenerate. There was good story to be had, but only after you slogged your way through a truly awful intro for the first 20-30 levels or so.
As awful as the game was though, you could really tell the shift when Yoshi P took over. He looked at other MMOs, learned lessons from their failures and successes, and applied that to FF XIV, and in so doing saved the game. When I played 2.0 in beta, it was like night and day in comparison to 1.0. Plus, there have been few events in gaming history that have been quite as cool as the fall of Dalamud.
Dang, wish Yoshi P was there for KHUX. Dude sounds like a legend. Also so excited for today’s part and thanks so much for those links, will definitely be watching them now.
I was aware of the absolute power move that was the development of 2.0 and the end of 1.0, but it still never ceases to amaze me.
I’m very excited for this so-called bad idea! I don’t want to play xiv for a handful of reasons but that doesn’t mean I’m not maddeningly curious as to why people adore it so much!!
As a 1.0 player this is an excellent and quick primer 10/10
Consider me primed.
I'm not sure if Dan mentioned it or not, but does this mean the Nier story mode is dead?
I'm totally down for this even if I've only managed to watch all told 30 seconds between sitting down with family stuff this weekend
Yoshi-P: "Can you please let me burn this game?"
Square Enix: "No"
Yoshi-P: "Can you please let me burn this game?"
Square Enix: "No"
Yoshi-P: "Can you please let me burn this game?"
Square Enix: "Ok, sure"
Neat! Knew nothing of this.
One thing I wish the new version had was the kinematics of the original 1.0. they moved good with weight compared to a realm reborn where it feels like WoW.
I was not prepared for hot WoL Dan in my thumbnails, but a welcome surprise all the same!
9:45 This is confusing. The monsters are called Ochu but those are straight up Marlboros, not Ochus. Why SquareEnix, why?!?!
